Round 1 Opponent: Ben Clayton
I love playing against Ben, as he always has a greta army to look at. He repaints his army, and they always look wonderful. Ben won map and side initiative. We played on King's road. I won first tunr initiative, and dropped a confusion on his starting area, afflicting a bat and a shadowdancer. He ended up getting a lot of VA points, but a few rounds of inactivity, and one loss of control to me of the dancer made for a very difficult matchup.
Round 2
Opponent: Keith Bellante
... And so Jeff has the tables turned. Keith Confused both my Storm and a dancer towards the end of round two. After He then shadowjumped my Charger, routing it, and then, at the beginning of the next round, when Strom rolled a 4 for her confusion, I conceded. He hadn't taken a point of damage yet, and Storm was about to kill her own soldiers. Not a good game. I made a crucial error, and was frankly outplayed by Keith. That's what I get for going to a qualifier with no practice.
Round 3
Opponent: Daniel Titgen
Triple Bluespawn with Shuluth. Here's an army I never thought I would see. We played on hellspike, and after baiting with Aramil, Shuluth came up to get the easy brain suck. Then I Jump-charged twice, and killed Shuluth outright. After that, it was mostly just mopping up the rest of the lizards, and watching 2/3 of them rout.
Round 4
Opponent: Michael Ohlsen
Man, wasn't worried about this game at all. I should have been. While I had no problem with the band, he killed my storm, who I should not have had engaged in combat. No successful Morale save later, and I lost a game that I should have won. I really beat myself up after this game, as I had the opportunity to really clean up, but I made some bad decision on whom to attack, and rather than take out Storm 9which i easily could have done) I focused on the other pieces. Lunch was after this round (dinner, technically) so fortunately I had time to decompress and analyze the tournament so far.
Round 4.5
Opponent: Subway sandwich
This was an easy matchup. I devoured the opponent. It was a delicious win.
Round 5
Opponent: Scott Tupper
Captain/Kord? Hmm, interesting. I was potentially worried here, Because if I made the same sort of mistakes I'd made before, Kord could get vicious. Fortunately, Kord moved close to me at the beginning of Round 2, So I waited for ryld and the captain to also activate, and I jump-charged for a total of 80 damage, after the valenar came in and hit for 15. Kord dead, Scot conceded, as I had everyone left unharmed.
So, we entered the final round with a group of us 3-2. I needed good tiebreaks in order to make the top 4. And I ended up paired against...
Round 6
Opponent: Bryan Nice.
Crap. the kid was 0-5. How did I get paired down that far? Jon (the TO) knew I wouldn't be happy, and even said so when he posted the pairings. The chances of me making it just went WAAAAAAY south. Ah well, you play the matches you're given. Bryan was playing triple HH, which I did not want to see. I selected the fire side start area (obvious, I know, but another player opted not to against him. He later realized his mistake) I MM'd one sneak first turn, to make him rout. Then my VNC ended the turn on the far VA by the statue. I knew I wouldn't be able to chew through three HH's, so i figure kill one plus everything else, and win on VP's. Which is exactly what I proceeded to do. I double jump charged Urthok for 50, then jumped away with one, and was able to run away with another. So I had 3 dancers, one with no jumps, one with one jump, and one with two jumps. I used the jumpless as bait, and the HH's came a calling. One enfeeblement ray later, and that dancer lasted a long time, and only died a bit quicker because I Silver fired through her to get all three HH's and the Dark Moon Monk. I chewed down one HH, and then scattered to the four corners (literally) using my Def Rolls to get away unscathed. I ended up killing 106 points of enemy pieces, and 10 rounds of VP's.
But I still finished in 7th. Something about ID qualifiers, I always lose on tie-breaks. Last year, the limited qualifier I finished 5th (again on tie-breaks) and the year before, same thing in constructed, 6th on tiebreaks Well, that's the breaks (pun intended)
Want to say thanks to Jon for holding a fun tournament, and to the UT guys for coming up. It was a lot of fun, and I think we're headed down there for the Limited Qualifier. | | Official Delegate, Wizards of the Coast Against The Giants Called Shot: Huge Green Dragon Icons Called Shot: Gargantuan Prismatic Dragon "Rejoice, for bad things are about to happen." | |
