Well, there were five of us that made the trip from the Windsor/Detroit area to go to the Toronto qualifier. It was probably a good thing as there were only 11 people that turned out (probably due to the Canadian holiday weekend, Montreal having a big tourney, previous qualifiers not showing). The following is a list of everyone with their warbands and the order of finish after 5 swiss rounds. Sorry, I am not sure of the exact format for posting so I will just do the best I can.

1. Jeff Alcorn (Calicles) 4-1 64.0000 Moon Elf Fighter, Shadowdancer x 4, Gnome Trickster, Wild Elf Warsinger, Xeph Warrior, Tomb of Queen Peregrine

2. John Alcorn (Jester72MI) 4-1 62.6667 Ryld Argith, Large Black Dragon x 3, Hyena, Orc Warrior x 3, Forest Cliff Lair

3. Terry Dodich (Neidhart) 4-1 58.6667 Storm Silverhand, Bat Familiar, Virtuous Charger x 2, Cormyrean War Wizard, Jozan, Cleric of Pelor, Mialee, Elf Wizard, Graycloak Ranger with Timber Wolf, Xeph Warrior, Dragon Shrine

4. Robin Paxton-Beesley (nirbo) 3-2 (bye) 58.3333 Urthok the Vicious, Dragonmark Heir of Deneith, Fire Giant Forgepriest, Duergar Champion, Dire Rat, Timber Wolf, Goblin Skirmisher x 2, Hellspike

5. Ryan Dodich 3-2 52.0000 Ryld Argith, Large Black Dragon x 3, Hyena, Orc Warrior x 3, Forest Cliff Lair

6. Dan Burr 3-2 (bye) 46.6667 Drow Cleric of Lolth, Large Black Dragon x 3, Small Black Dragon, bat familiar, orc warrior x2, warrior skeleton, Hailstorm Tower

7. Yik Au 2-3 Half-Orc Paladin, Shield Guardian, Maug, Sacred Watcher x 3, Aramil, Adventurer, Man-at-Arms, Dragon Shrine

8. Rafael Brusilow 1-3 (bye) 66.6667 (dropped after round 4) Half-Orc Paladin, Shield Guardian, Maug, Sacred Watcher, and I believe the rest of this warband was the same as Yik's, ?

9. Rob Webster 1-2 (dropped after round 3) Werewolf Lord, Large Black Dragon x 2, Thrall of Blackrazor, Gnoll x 2, Hunting Hyena x 2, Hellspike

10. Jey Legarie (greyhaze) 0-2 75.0000 (dropped after round 2), Purple Dragon Knight, Mialee, elf wizard, shield guardian, maug, Aramil, Adventurer, Sacred Watcher x 3, ?

11. John Morrison 0-3 (dropped after round 3) Cleric of Sune, Bat Familiar, Large Brass Dragon, Gnome Trickster, Dwarf Battlerager x 4, Air Mephit, ?

After the swiss rounds, 3rd - Terry Dodich (already qualified) and 4th - Robin Paxton-Beesley (not going to gencon) dropped allowing Ryan Dodich and Dan Burr to move up and qualify.

Semi-finals:

Ryan Dodich vs John Alcorn, Ryan wins

Dan Burr vs Jeff Alcorn, Dan wins

Finals:

Dan Burr vs Ryan Dodich

Dan drops which allows Ryan to take first place

So the final standings look like this

1st (by drop) - Ryan Dodich Ryld Argith, Large Black Dragon x 3, Hyena, Orc Warrior x 3, Forest Cliff Lair

2nd (by drop) - Dan Burr Drow Cleric of Lolth, Large Black Dragon x 3, Small Black Dragon, bat familiar, orc warrior x2, warrior skeleton Hailstorm Tower

3rd/4th - Jeff Alcorn (Calicles) Moon elf Fighter, Shadowdancer x 4, Gnome Trickster, Wild elf Warsinger, Xeph Warrior, Tomb of Queen Peregrine

3rd/4th - John Alcorn (Jester72MI) Ryld Argith, Large Black Dragon x 3, Hyena, Orc Warrior x 3, Forest Cliff Lair

Congratulations to the car load of people I drove up with - everyone qualified! Thanks to Wayne and Dueling Grounds for hosting a great tourney!

It was great meeting all the people at the tourney and I will post my tournament shortly.

Congrats to Ryan. And congrats to the others who qualified.

[sad]
I must say, it's really disappointing for me that the only two qualifiers I can go to are Niles and Ypsilanti. A lot of you guys get to play at qualifiers with 20 or fewer players, and both of mine are going to be in the mid 30s (Niles was 33, if I recall correctly). I really don't like the super long days. And, honestly, it's a lot easier to end up in the top 4 (drops or no drops) with 11 players.
[/sad]

[realist]
But, a lot more of you guys can only go to one qualifier (or none!) and the drive is outrageous.  So, I try to count my blessings.

Dave,

I'm down to 1 qualifier this year. I almost could've made 4

KD
IL
MN
WI

But can only make 1 with my new job as a casino Blackjack dealer. I wish I went to KD, I feel I could've won down there. (Possibly)

Windsor, Ontario, Canada

05/21/2007 9:08 AM
I came up with Terry with the Windsor/Detroit crowd. We were disappointed with the turnout as last year it was much larger from what I understand. As Terry mentioned, a big Montreal tournament held back some people as well as likely players from New York already qualifying at Oakmont or Rochester. Even one of the highly rated Toronto players probably had family obligations on our Canadian long weekend and didn't show.

My warband:
LBDx3, Drow Cleric of Lolth, Small Back Dragon, Bat Familiar, Orc Warriorx2, Warrior Skeleton (Cmd5, 9 activations) Map:Hailstorm Tower. Ever the tinkerer, I didn't want to take Ryld or the WWL as my commander. The dual Magic Weapon spells came in quite handy, as did having the Small Black Draon to line through. Yes, the D,CoL is a tad squishy but I was hoping for the best. My CE turned out to be very handyas well. I like the map as the LBDs can get to the central Victory areas easily and there is a handy Sacred Circle waitng for them to dominate.

Round 1 versus Jey Legarie (greyhaze)
His warband: Purple Dragon Knight, Shield Guardian, Maug, Sacred Watcherx3, Aramil, Mialee (Cmd6, 8 activations) Map Dragon Shrine. We play on his map but I take the Cold (and hence Acid) side.

We move up. I move the the central VA while he is across the top, somewhat cautiously. I move my last dragon around to the top. I win initiative and am able to line the Shield Guardian, Maug, PDK and Aramil. Both the Shield Guardian and Aramil fail. The Shield Guardian tries to Fear cone that LBD but I pass OoC MC. He moves in some Sacred Watchers but I manage to get off all my lines so they go through the Shield Guardian which fails all 3 saves and dies by the end of the round. Some of the Sacred Watchers take a bit of damage. Long story short, one LBD routs to the PDK's Fear cone but the Maug misses often enough that I'm able to kill of the PDK and the Maug to win. +5 damage to flanked creatures was nice, allowing even fodder to do 10 or 15 damage.
Result 204-97. Record 1-0

Round 2 versus Rafael Brusilow.
His warband: Half-Orc Paladin, Shield Guardian, Maug, Sacred Watcherx3, Aramil, Man-at-Arms (Cmd3, 8 activations) Map Dragon Shrine. We play on Hailstorm Tower.

I fly my LBDs up and he manages to get a SW into the VA so we both get tile points. On round 2 I'm able to actually get the SBD to pass both Incorporeal checks and do 5 and 10 to two SWs. This is handy as I'm able to flank one and run my commander close enough that I did 25 damage to kill a SW before the round ended. By the end of the second round I'd killed off another SW, only losing the Bat and the Skeleton. The Maug was finally able to show up for round 3 to try to do some damage. That third round had us trading a LBD for the Maug. In the 4th round, I scored a critical on a flanked H-OP to kill him off for the win. I think I won every initiative so that helped very much. Again, +5 damage to flanked enemies was great.
Score 203-93. Record 2-0

Round 3 versus Yik Au who was 1-1.
His warband: Half-Orc Paladin, Shield Guardian, Maug, Sacred Watcherx3, Aramil, Man-at-Arms (Cmd3, 8 activations) Map Dragon Shrine. We play on Dragonshrine but I get the Cold (/Acid) side.

Yik is very careful in moving up his creatures, not allowing even 2 creatures to be in a line. I decide I want to kill the Maug as it is the source of much of his damage output and swing my 3 dragons to the top to set up some lines. In round 2, the Maug passed all 3 line saves, keeping it quite healthy. Round 3 was critical. I rolled a 22 for initiative but Yik rolled 23. The Maug forced a MC on a LBD, which passed but then got a crit on his second attack to kill it. I then roll poorly and can't even finish off the flanked Maug. Things go poorly from there and I lose both remaining dragons and only killing a SW.

In retrospect, I should have stayed to the bottom of the map and made him come to me (being up on VA points). It would also prevent his slow commander and hitters from being as useful.

Obviously, Yik, Rafael and Jey are friends and collaborated on their warbands. While it is solid, the Half-Orc Paladin (or PDK) is too slow and his rating of 3 hurts for initiative all to often, IMO.

Result 201-89. Record 2-1

Round 3 versus John Alcorn (Jester72MI/Orion72).
His warband: Ryld, LBDx3, Hyena, OWx3 (Cmd4(8 for init), 8 activations) Map Forest Cliff Lair. We play on Hailstorm Tower.

I go first and move to occupy the VA's early, thinking I'd hit more often if I was in the Sacred Circle. Round 2 and John wins initiative and extends himself to kill off my commander with 2 lines. I attempt to return the favour and go after Ryld and also line his fodder. His third dragon is forced to spend all 3 attacks to kill off my SBD, which helps. Round 3 sees me miss Ryld on 3 of 4 attacks. Had I killed him, it would have been 3 LBDs versus 3 LBDs, with me up on points and with my 3-point fodder collecting VA points and the Orcs adding to damage (which happened with a crit which was nice). However, it was not to be. Ryld lived and so he won all the initiatives and my dragons went down faster than his.
Score 201-93. Record 2-2

At this point enough people had dropped so that of the 3 2-2 players left one of us was going to get a bye. It was me. Round 5 versus (Bye). Crushed him. Record 3-2.

I finished 6th but due to drops and overall lack of attendance got top 4.

Semis versus Jeff Alcorn (Calicles).
His warband: Moon Elf Fighter, Shadowdancerx4, Gnome Trickster, Wild Elf Warsinger, Xeph Warrior (Cmd5, 8 activations) Map ToQP. We play on Hailstorm.

I know there are walls on this map but they aren't the greatest for long jumps. Still, I keep my commander hidden in a corner and even put some fodder in some likely end-jump squares. He moves carefully to prevent more than 2 'Dancers getting hit by any one line. I'm also cautious as I don't want Tactics to kill a dragon before he can do anything. I feel better having the SBD around though as his purpose is justified (something I can line through to hit invisible). Also, the map is set up for an "alley of death" between the two victory areas.

Anyways, Jeff tries to Jump to kill fodder to clear a path to my commander. He gets 2 lines in return, which routs both 'Dancers. I also rout a third 'Dancer in the VA that had sent the SBD packing to near the exit. Even the SBD rallies though on a 9! Anyways, it's not pretty for Jeff in round 3. His routing 'Dancers are based and brought to near death -- one even dieing to the SBD line. He sees the writing on the wall and concedes.

Seeing the 4 hour drive back, I drop for the finals so we can get home earlier.

Thanks for all who came out. Thanks also to the folks at the Dueling Grounds.
