| | Josh Leslie here. My triple blacks and thrall took second. I went 5-2 for the day.
Good playing Kyle, and everyone else at the tournament. I wish I'd gotten to play kyle's vlaaklith band for first instead of Glen's Solar. It was gonna be rough for my dragons against his Solar even without me forgeting he could get first round line of sight and losing my thrall to the slaying error.
I'm totally stoked to have qualified as well. I don't have the notes I took, but I'll come back later and right up my matches, too.

| Greg here. I came in 5th...sooo close! *sigh*
I was running a Storm Silverhand, Virtuous Charger, Cormyrean War Wizard x2, Aasimar Favored Soul, Bat Familiar, Elf Warrior, Graycloak Ranger + Wolf band, with King's Road as my map. My only two losses were to the shadowdancer band that came in fourth (in my first round), and the Vaaklith/Vampire Dire Wolf band that placed third (in my last round). I got my map on rounds 2, 3, and 5, and played on my opponents' maps on rounds 1 and 4.
The shadowdancer band I think I lost on map and side initiative--I ended up playing on the Dragon Shrine, in the farther starting area; had it been on my map (King's Road) I suspect it would have gone very differently! Still, the player of that band (Dave I think his name is) did an excellent job piloting them.
The Vaaklith band was just a bad matchup for me, with their resistances and immunities to many of my energy spells. I did take out the Thrall early (before it had made an attack) by doing a little collateral damage on the Virtuous Charger with a LB. I then had an opportunity to possibly take out (or seriously weaken) Vaaklith, but missed both of my Virtuous Charger attacks, and that was pretty much the final turning point.
Of course, I didn't just concede--I played it out to the bitter end! I actually managed to do 10 damage from two sound bursts on Vaaklith from the Favored Soul before it perished! *pumps fist in air*
My biggest tactical blunder in the game vs. Vaaklith was allowing him to fireball one of his cursed spirits and hit my entire warband. While I only lost two pieces (the bat and the elf warrior), and made a number of saves, I think losing the Bat had a serious impact on my game, since it prevented me from using the deliver touch spell later. I'll try to be more aware of that next time!
Of the games I won, some of them were fairly close--in fact, I tied on my 2nd game, and won only because I occupied squares nearer to the center of the board than my opponent. If he had thought to keep a mini in a victory area in the last round, or had moved his Forgepriest to the center, I would have lost. (On the other hand, we were only tied on points because I failed two morale saves on the Aasimar, who only needed a 7 to make the check as I recall).
My 3rd game was against someone running dual bralanis and dual asuras with an inspiring marshal; a good band, but the player was very new to the game, and it made all the difference, I'm afraid. Still, he was a good sport about it, and I hope he had a good time at the tournament and will be inspired to crush me next year!
My fourth matchup was against someone up from San Francisco, who was running a CE Quad band (Eye of Gruumsh, Orc Champ x2, Large Black Dragon, fodder). I lost map initiative, and we were playing on Hellspike (bad for me!). I won because (a) he forgot I could lightning bolt Storm with impunity, and I used her to target Orc Champs hiding in smoke that were out of command, and (b) he rolled terrible on his saves and morale checks; both failed one of two LB saves, and their initial morale saves; on rallying, only one made the rally check, and the other routed off the board. We had a standoff in the following rounds on opposite sides of the smoke, but finally he brought in his dragon and blasted me with the breath weapon; my guys took the blast, and took out the dragon in retaliation. At that point he conceded.
I had a good time overall; it occurs to me that my track record this time was exactly the same as the last qualifier I went to last year--3 and 2, with my losses being in the 1st and 5th rounds, and coming in 5th overall.
Well, I'm going to GenCon anyway, so I'll see many of you there at the DDM Community Draft Tournament on Saturday night! And one nice thing about not qualifying--more time for D&D and other fun convention pursuits!
My best wishes to everyone I played with. Not a sour or ill-mannered person in the bunch!

| I posted this on hordelings, but seeing this thread, I figure I ought to put the report here as well. My thanks to the store staff and the local gamers who were at the tourney. It was a pleasure playing with all of you. 16 total participants (I only have the names of the 13 who didn't drop and I only have the bands for the top 4): After 5 rounds of swiss:
1. Kyle Rakoz 5-0 (Vlaakith, Vampire dire wolf, thrall of blackrazor, cursed spirit x2, timber wolf, warrior skeleton
2. Dave Doffing 4-1 (Storm, 3x Shadowdancer, Cormyrian war wizard, graycloak+timber wolf, bat, xeph, wild elf warsinger)
3. Josh Leslie 4-1 (Drow Sergeant, 3x large black dragons, thrall of blackrazor, 3x orc warrior)
4. Glyn Dewey 3-2 (Solar, shield guardian, dragonmarked heir, mialee, timber wolf, 3x man at arms)
5. Greg Ragland 3-2
6. Nicholas Rice 3-2 (I think he had Eye of Gruumsch, large black
dragon, 2x orc champion, orc wardrummer, and 3 orc warriors, but I may
have that player's name wrong)
7. Chris Craig 3-2
8. Carl Baughman 3-2
9 Shane Voelker 2-3
10 Trevor Riviera 2-3
11 Van Wolfe 2-3
12 Stephen Townson 1-4
13 Jake Watkins 0-5
7. Carl Baughman Top 4:
Glyn defeats Kyle
Leslie defeats dave Final:
Glyn defeats Leslie So much for results, how about a report now: Pretourney. I was flying up so I brought a limited selection of bands with me: Ultroforge
SWarm (Ulmo-Swarm and classic Swarm)
Solar (with a human commoner in case I decided to use it instead of a man at arms)
Large Black Dragons (with Ryld or Werewolf Lord as commander and with 3 dragons/2 dragons+thrall versions)
CG Storm bands (Shadowdancers, virtuous chargers, or a hybrid with the slayer of domiel) I didn't make my decision as to what to play until shortly before
the tourney. I was very tempted to play Ulmo-Swarm. It has favorable
matchups against what I consider to be the better half of the meta. The
problem is that ultroforge is still a fairly popular band and should
rip it apart. (Unlimited scorching rays, bodyguard, and +20 attack
bonus vs. Ulmo=bad news). That, and I've never played Ulmo-Swarm
(though I've played against it and watched Derry play against it). I
was also strongly tempted to play the dragon bands. However, I figured
that there might well be a ballista band or an ulmoSWarm in the tourney
and I didn't really want to face either of them (not that Ultroforge is
a walk in the park for the dragons either). Then it occurred to me: the solar band actually has a pretty strong
matchup against all of the bands I was considering. That put me down on
its side. Then came the matches: 1. vs. Marut, coatl, 2 sacred watchers, coatl, cleric of order, aramil. I won map and so we played on thieves' quarter. I made the solar and
the bodyguard immune to sonic damage and shot my opponent's tile
grabbing wolf with the solar. Unfortunately, it made morale. My wolf,
which was hit in the second round, didn't. There was a lot of
manuevering, but my opponent exposed aramil in the fourth round and he
routed off the table and I was then able to manever the shield guardian
to kill his cleric of order while the coatl took AoOs to get away from
the solar. At the end, I won on points on the strength of killing
aramil, the cleric of order, a wolf, and a three pointer and three
rounds of assault points vs. four or five rounds of assault points and
a man at arms and timber wolf for my opponent. 2. vs. Inspiring Marshal, 2x Asura, 2x Bralani, aramil, etc. His map was also thieves' quarter so there was no need to roll for
map init. My opponent exposed aramil during setup, so when I was forced
to go first, I moved and shot aramil with the solar--he then routed off
the board. That was fortunate because my opponent took advantage of the
last activation to route my timber wolf off the board. 13-10 me.
In the following rounds, I was able to gain assault points with more
durable units. I tried for a slaying arrow on his bralani but missed.
Eventually, however, the solar and bodyguard beat down his asuras and
bralanis one at a time until I hit 200 points with only a wounded asura
and the untouched inspiring marshal left to my opponent. 3. vs. Eye of Gruumsch, Large black dragon, orc champion x2, orc wardrummer, orc savage, and IIRC, orc warrior and timber wolf. I won map init and we played on thieves quarter. With my last
activation, I was able to move my solar and shoot his timber wolf which
then routed off the board and replace it with my timber wolf to put me
up 15-0. In the next round, he killed my timber wolf and I landed a
slaying arrow on an orc champion (who made the save) and a magic
missile on his orc warrior (thus once again denying him assault
points). This points lead and whittling of my opponent's fodder forced
him to run an orc champion to his victory area when I was still able to
respond with the solar and shield guardian who killed or routed the orc
champion (I didn't note which but I think it was an outright kill). My opponent responded by moving the eye and an his remaining orc
champ up to the roof where I was able to follow up by moving my
bodyguard adjacent to the solar and shield guardian. He proceeded to
miss once or twice with the eye and then conceded when the solar,
bodyguard, and shield guardian combined to eliminate the orc champ and
whittle his eye of gruumsch to the point that hitting my pieces enough
to morale check them would kill the eye. 4. Vs. Vlaakith, vampiric dire wolf, thrall of blackrazor, 2x cursed spirit, etc. I won init and we played on thieves quarter. The early portions of
this game went very well for me. My opponent exposed his vampiric dire
wolf by moving it to attack the shield guardian and the solar destroyed
it with a slaying arrow. The thrall then proceeded to miss the shield
guardian two or three times (thanks to the solar's cfx), enabling me to
drop him to 5 hp with the shield guardian and finish him off with
mialee's magic missile. Vlaakith and a cursed spirit finished off the
shield guardian, but we were close to time and I still had an uninjured
solar and bodyguard. Then, my solar at the edge of the central tower
(connected to both victory areas and adjacent to the shared victory
area), rather than fully retreat to deny vlaakith the disintegrate, or
to base Vlaakith and attack, denying her the disintegrate without
taking an AoO from the solar and ten damage from jumping off the roof,
I moved back two squares from the edge and attacked the cursed spirit.
Vlaakith would be able to move onto roof and disintegrate but only by
remaining in melee reach of the solar. She did so. The solar failed the
save and, thanks to the cursed spirit, failed his morale check. Thanks
to my moving back rather than forward, he routed off the board. The
game went on for two or three more rounds. Mialee miraculously survived
as did my men at arms. The bodyguard killed one cursed spirit and kept
scoring assault points but my opponent didn't take the bait and move
vlaakith to engage the bodyguard. Two rounds later, he won on assault
points (one or two rounds before I would have accumulated the 90
assault points I would need to win without killing vlaakith). 5. vs. Storm, 3x shadwodancers, cormyrian war wizard, etc. In my defense, I think I only won one initiative this game other
than setup. In the first round, my opponent was able to route my timber
wolf off of the victory area with a shadowdancer and move his bat to
the edge of my victory area. The next round, my opponent won initiative
(thus denying me a slaying arrow on the shadowdancer who routed my
timber wolf). I then made two mistakes. First, I forgot my opponent had
put flight on his shadowdancers. Second, for some inexplicable
reason--probably because I had forgotten that two of the shadowdancers
could fly and that storm has countersong, I placed my solar one square
from the edge of my rooftop victory area and put the bodyguard next to
him. That worked well until storm moved up and the war wizard rayed the
bodyguard to death and a shadowdancer flew in to flank with the bat.
Now, I was in trouble. My shield guardian pursued the warwizard and
successfully kept him from contributing anything further to the fight,
but he wasn't enough to keep my solar alive--especially when he kept
missing shadowdancers. I killed storm and one shadowdancer, and I might
have pulled it out by routing another shadowdancer in the last round,
but it was not to be and the solar died to the sneak attacking
shadowdancers. At least my tie-breaks proved good enough to get me into the top four this year. Match 1. A rematch against Kyle's Vlaakith band. This time he won initiative so we played on frostfell rift. I was careful to set up so as not to give my opponent any starting
tile fireballs. This time I magic weaponed the bodyguard and put both
immunity to fire and electricity on the solar. I also magic missiled my
opponent's warrior skeleton and routed his wolf with the solar's ranged
attack. In round 2, I won initiative and cast the magic missile then
was about to move my timber wolf out as a fireball screen when I
realized that the vampire dire wolf was exposed. I moved and used a
slaying arrow on it, destroying it. My shield guardian and bodyguard then got into a scrum with Vlaakith
and the thrall of blackrazor in the neighborhood of the central victory
area (though my records indicate that my opponent didn't manage to
score assault points after round 1). The shield guardian was getting
the worst of the tradeoff (not surprisingly since Vlaakith attempted a
disintegrate on it and even on a successful save, that's still 30
damage plus ten from the fireball it had eaten earlier) so I moved the
solar in to deal with Vlaakith. And he promptly failed his paralysis
save. The bodyguard dutifully soaked up a hit that would have otherwise
been a double damage hit from vlaakith and I moved the injured shield
guardian back in order to deal with the thrall. My solar unparalyzed
and was promptly paralyzed again by Vlaakith. The thraal killed a man
at arms and moved around in order to avoid taking AoOs on his way in to
beat on the solar. The next round, I lost initiative and the bodyguard
took a Vlaakith's hit for the solar and was promptly paralyzed by it.
The thrall finished her off and then struck the solar who passed his
morale check. The solar then beat the thrall to within 15 hp of death
before turning his attentions to Vlaakith. The shield guardian finished
off the thraal and vlaakith retreated. The next round, I charged
vlaakith with the solar and, thanks to the charge, hit her and finished
her off. Final match: vs. Leslie's triple LBD, thrall, drow sergeant band. We both had thieves' quarter as our map but I won init and made him
set up first. When I saw that he had exposed his thraal of blackrazor
to the thin line of sight from my start area to his, I set up the solar
to take advantage of it. I won initiative, cast magic weapon on the solar, and slaying
arrowed the thrall of blackrazor. The thrall failed the save and died.
I then moved the solar up to the base of my opponent's rooftop victory
area. The shield guardian and bodyguard warded themselves against acid.
My opponent started to run a cordon manuever. He breathed his dragon on
my timber wolf which promptly made its save and then passed morale (one
lucky dog!). He then parked the drow sergeant and two dragons on my
rooftop victory area while moving another one down to the shared
victory area so that I would have to base it in order to score assault
points. Unfortunately for him, that was actually a pretty good option
for me. I moved the solar to base it, attacked dealing 25 damage, and
moved both the bodyguard and shield guardian adjacent to the solar. The next round, I won initiative, hit twice with the solar forcing
morale (which it passed) and then finished it off with the shield
guardian). My opponent then moved a second black dragon in to base the
shield guardian in the corridor between his rooftop victory area and
central square. I charged with the bodyguard and hit. The next round, I
won initiative again, flew the solar over the dragon into a flank and
hit it once, then hit it with the bodyguard. Without being able to see
the drow sergeant, if failed morale and ran off the table. Left with a
single black dragon against my uninjured solar, bodyguard, and shield
guardian, my opponent conceded.

| This is definitely a too-little, too-late statement, but according to the last writeup of elder_basalisk, he violated the rules (certainly unintentionally) in his semi-final match. According to the stacking rules, if you cast Protection from Energy (fire) and Protection from Energy (electricity) on the same target, only one of them actually effects the target (you get to choose which one when the second one is cast). Thus, the Solar should not have been immune to both fire and electricity.

| Shoot. I shall have to make sure not to do that in the future--or if I do, only to do so when I decide that I would rather have the second energy protection than the first.
Still, as the game turned out, I would have been much better off with Vlaakith casting electric orbs at the solar than constantly paralyzing him.

| Okay here's the short report but still longer than just the numbers... Ohh and I currently live in Portland if anyone is hosting games...
Vlaakith's undying flame!!!
Vlaakith VDW Thrall of Blackblade Cursed spirit x2 warrior skelt T wolf 7 acts, Frostfell rift
I chose this band as it had a chance about at just about any band dependent on all the saves that may have to be made. First and second round fireballs hurt! even stout units are one VDW hit away from moral or death after that. The thrall loves loves loves fodder and except the time I was using him for bait always got at least 2 fodder pieces. Then throw on disintegrate and paralysis saves backed by the cursed spirits and your opponent is going to fail some. Then thiers the new thrall ability to boot. Cursed spirits make excellent flankers and hit paralysied units for 15 and the VDW hits for the magic 30dmg within six of Vlaakith. Worst match up is triple or quad black or CE Quad. VS. solar and FGFP it all comes down to a dice game. Ulmo swarm is near auto loss unfortunately but not too popular yet. I had practiced with this band 4 times before taking it to the qualifier, which was enough to know how potent it could be. I chose frostfell rift as I hadn't heard of many people being familiar with it, first and second round fireballs, easy assult points first round for me, and with all the large units running around the possibility of hitting them into the pits (yet more saves).
First round Swiss: Vs. Stephen: a young player who said he was here for fun. I felt bad after what I saw he was bringing to the table. But he played it well and got some good pointers througthout the day. He ended up 13th I believe.
3x bluespawn thunderlizards, quori, fodder. I won on round four 213 to 11. losing only a cursed spirit to a lightening bolt, He won map init but chose my map. My immunities and resistances to lightening and good fodder placement basically nullified lightening bolts and powerful charges. When his Quori failed his moral check and routed off the board after my VDW got an AoO to bring him up to 40hp again it was mostly over. I had gotten tile points each round and prevented him from getting any. Not going to say much else, I was almost flawless here.
Swiss round 2: Vs. Trevor 2 virtuous chargers, storm, CWW, Aramil, bat, fodder- I won map and set up.
First round fireball on a charger and CWW but both saved. Double moved VDW to base CWW. I get easy first round assult and deny him any, he picked off a warrior skelt with storm. Round two started with a disentigrate on one charger after moving cursed spirit over- failed save and failed moral but poor placement of the cursed spirit made it so the charger was locked in. I had forgot that he chose not to fly them round one! He steps away with CWW and wolf crits for the kill. Thrall moved killed wolf first round, swift hasted to kill aramil second while basing storm. VDW finishes off charger and moves to help Vlaakith with the other charger. When the second charger fails his paralysis save from Vlaakith the game was mine. Poor placement on both our parts during the game. I have to get better at this.
Swiss Round 3: Vs. Dave W. who ended up fourth. Storm, Dancer's x3, CWW, warsinger, graycloak, Twolf, bat- he won map init and I won set up. Chose fireside to deny him less fireball dmg.
His dancers take out one of my cursed spirits and a T-wolf in the first two rounds but I still managed tile points with my Warrior skelt in the top right corner but was still behind. He ran his Twolf and graycloak away from the thrall and VDW which made a very small line of site to the backside of his CWW with Vlaakith so I hit the disentegrate button and he turned to dust, even had he made the save my VDW was in position to finish him off and base storm and the thrall would have followed. Round three dancers get cursed spirit and Twolf while my thrall gets his Greycloak and is 16 away from his already activated bat and VDW kills warsinger, other dancer and storm team up on my VDW. In round four dancer rolls a one to not kill VDW. Vlaakith is in prime paralyization spot and thrall gets the bat and moves for the storm kill if paralysis happens. I win init in round 5 and paralyise storm, thrall hits a dancer once and uses second att to put 40 on storm. I win init again next round and paralize dancer and thrall takes out both the dancer and storm for 145hp and the win. My worst thing this opponnet was I forgot to use my VDW's stun!!!
Well thats the first three rounds... I'll get to the fiinal three tonight!!! | | Rock Bottom Pricing: Arcane Archer 30, Centaur Hero 67, Human Cleric of Bane 25, Gold Champion 34, Death Knight 52, Goblin Blackblade 9, Silentwolf Goblin 7, Orc Raider 10, Dwarf axefighter 9, Healer 9, Thaskor 65, Aspect of Demogorgon 71, Ogre 9, Fire Giant 79, Human Wanderer 7, Drunken Master 18, Barghest 12, Longstider Barbarian 27, Longtooth Barbarian 22, Frost Giant 76, Ravenous Vampire 42, Large Earth Elemental: priceless

| Okay... Round 4... Vs. Glen: Solar, sheild Gaurdian, Dragonmarked heir, MOAx3, Twolf- won map init (thieves quarter, I won set up). I had never officially played on TQ but had studied it pretty hard. I wasn't quite familiar enough with the roof rules but good enough to win (with a bit of luck). We had some issues with line of sight round one. He asked if we agreed that there was no line of sight to the lower squares and we did, just afterwords he tried to move down and slaying arrow from a different square but I agured that we just both agreed that there was none. He was good about it and appologized. We both got tile points round one in the center VA. His solar shot my wolf but made his moral. He tried to tempt my thrall out for a slaying arrow, but i didn't bite.
Round 2- i zot his wolf with a electricity orb from Vlaakith and block with a cursed spirit. He moved some fodder, I moved mine, my wolf moved to my VA, then he put his sheild gaudian on his VA and I moved my VDW over to take a big bite out of him since he did not cast MW on it (my first objective for this match was to take out his sheildgaurd). I thought I was protected on the rooftop but he got the slaying arrow off and the VDW was gone like that. Seeing his big oppertunity to cordon at that point I double moved and swift hasted my thrall for a hit on the shield gaurd and double moved Vlaakith to keep him from being able to land the solar on the VA at all. Also brought over a cursed spirit to round it out while moving my second cursed spirit to the center VA.
Round 3- Boo my thrall misses x2!!! but an elect orb from Vlaakith makes it doable next round... Solar and dragonmarked try to hunt down one of my cursed spirits and kill off my warrior skelt and puts the shieldgaurd under CFX. Solar and dragonmarked are cordaned off thier victory area!!!
Round 4- I win init again!!! Thrall misses x2 again, both due to CFX!!! I bring up my cursed spirits who, with the help of Vlaakith take out the sheild gaurd... big mistake on my part. The shield gaurdian had hit the Thrall all 4 times and since I didn't move my wolf to block mialee MM the thralls last 5!!! Horrible mistake on my part and now it was totally a dice game and my time was running out. Double moved the cursed spirit to get next to the solar. He moves his solar back 2 squares to force me to come to him (AoO misses) and he missed incorp roll vs Cursed spirit.
Round 5- I win init and off goes the disintegrate spell. 60dmg, moral check, 19 thanks to the cursed spirit!!! solar routs and its clean up time.
I spend the next two rounds hunting MaA's and win on victory points before he can rack up the needed 4 rounds to win.
******************************************************* Big mistakes made by me this game: not knowing roof rules, not getting off my fireball, not getting the thrall HP before engaging, VDW getting slain. This was my one freebee match and I needed it. | | Rock Bottom Pricing: Arcane Archer 30, Centaur Hero 67, Human Cleric of Bane 25, Gold Champion 34, Death Knight 52, Goblin Blackblade 9, Silentwolf Goblin 7, Orc Raider 10, Dwarf axefighter 9, Healer 9, Thaskor 65, Aspect of Demogorgon 71, Ogre 9, Fire Giant 79, Human Wanderer 7, Drunken Master 18, Barghest 12, Longstider Barbarian 27, Longtooth Barbarian 22, Frost Giant 76, Ravenous Vampire 42, Large Earth Elemental: priceless

| Re: Players in Portland, I've been a native Portlandite most of my life, and currently reside here. I oversee a D&D Minis group on Sundays at Wizard's Toy Chest, a small gaming store on SW Barbur Boulevard, on Sundays at about 12 noon to 3 or 3:30 p.m. (depending on turnout and when games finish). We haven't done any DCI tournaments in a long time, but if you like that sort of thing, Guardian Games (in SE Portland, a couple blocks south of the Burnside Bridge) hosts such games on Saturdays maybe twice a month. I've been wanting to go to one or more, but I usually have stuff planned on Saturdays, so I haven't had the time or opportunity as yet.
I look forward to Lord_Rock's 5th round report, as it was vs. me (you can see my more abbreviated account of it above).
I am curious as to how many local Portlandites will be going to GenCon this year (whether you qualified or not). I plan on going; I won't be in the Nationals (I was in the Grinder last year, and once was enough for me), but plan on spending time playing D&D, and will be in the D&D Online Community game on Saturday. I hope to see you there!

5th round... Vs. Greg
So let me start off by saying and admiting some things at this point: One, I got a bit cocky and sloppy and it killed me (almost this game, and definatly in the finals). Two, if I would have conceded to Greg he would have probably made the finals instead of Glen. Damn, 20/20 hindsight, I would have much rather played Greg's band again. But, those two things being said, I wanted to go 5-0 and I have been on the losing end of the stick as far as tie breakers go for the past few tournies I've played in due to drops and concedes in the last swiss round. Not wanting to put my spotless record on the line nor put anyone in a possition I wouldn't want for myself I decided to play Greg.
He won map init so we played on kings road. I won set up and chose the "open" side (with the VA in the graveyard) as you can first round fireball if you opponent isn't paying attention. Greg was so I had to wait until round 2 for fireball.
round one was all placement. I moved my thrall and Vlaakith last hoping for him to expose something. I ended up moving my thrall to the shared VA but didn't take the oppertunity to haste for the +20 hp. i would like to say I was waiting for Greg to kill him with the VC so he'd have to make the new thrall save next to the cursed spirit I had placed there but I really don't know why I didn't haste for the kill. My VDW was waiting on the far side of the forest to either double move and base a bunch of spell casters or to rack up a 30dmg hit after I double moved Vlaakith up.
round two he did the proper thing and took out the thrall with VC and silver fire but in doing so he kinda set himself up for trouble. Fireball my own cursed spirit and hit both CWW, Storm, VC, elf warrior, and Twolf. ouch...I lost my own cursed spirit in the process. Most made thier save but that put every one in VDW kill range. One CWW got off a phalanxed schorching ray on Vlaakith that actually made it through SR. See where the cocky and sloppy bit came in. To boot I had forgot that he had MW, blessed, and Mfanged the charger which ment he had a much better chance of killing Vlaakith than I realized. Still needed a 6 and 11 but that's a lot different than 10/15, and then the SR check too. The VDW came over and said Hi to the rest of his warband basing storm, 2xCWW.
Round three he won init and I realized my mistake but the VC missed both times! Storm put dmg down on the wolf and then took a whack from Vlaakith who took an AoO, but made paralysis save, failed moral, Vlaakith whacked her again but she made the save again and my cursed spirit missed the AoO. The CWW's went to town on my cursed spirit but one failed an incorp check. Assamir favored soul and greycloak fought from forest cover against the VDW but needed crits to do any good.
Round four sealed the deal for me when I won init. VDW killed the CWW that had spells left to hurt Vlaakith and went hunting for storm in case she decided to return. Vlaakith stepped back and hit the VC with disentigrate and the game was over when she flew off the board.
Greg required we play it all out. the next few rounds involved the favored soul getting off 2-3 soundbursts on Vlaakith!!! yes failed saves and passed sr checks. But too little too late. The VDW finished off Storm and was at full HP again. Even losing the thrall (stupidly) my bands immunities, dmg, fearless, and save requirements were too much. I can't remember if i used my VDW's stun or not.
Well played Greg and never lose that fighting spirit. I always play games out no matter how futile!!!
So now 5-0 I anxiously await the final standings... And now I have to play Glen...Again... Great!!!

Posted By CoyoteNomad on 05/21/2007 3:52 PM Josh Leslie here.
I was totally going to try to pull you aside to remind you of that first round line of site but you guys started so quick!!! I would have much rather watched the game with you at full warband than down a man to start. It would have been a rough match either way but the thrall would have given you a fighting chance. I'm glad I didn't face your band. It probably would have all come down to saves. But on the bright side I had failed every single save the entire day so luck was bound to help me out a bit... right??? maybe??? one can hope??? Anyway...

| And one more...
First round Finals VS. Glen and his Solar
Remember the cocky and sloppy part I was talking about earlier. It took me a few days to get it but I played horridly during this match. Horridly. I made a lot of mistakes and had to play catch up. Dice finally stopped going my way too.
I won map init so we played on my map, Frostfell rift. I was really hoping to get off an early fireball and have his two large bases have to come to me on the slippery terrain for some pit checks but it was not to be so when I again won set up and he was able to check LOS's. I believe I won set up init every single match of this tourny and only wanted to win it once!
Round one was manouvering. Nothign special. His solar popped my wolf who was sitting in the far victory area and he promptly fled. And that was the game. Right there. because...
Round Two: after routing my wolf and wining init Mialee MM my Warrior Skelt and now my VDW was wide open for that durn slaying arrow! I failed again and the VDW was gone without making a single roll and I was now way down on points. Luckily I was able to eat a wolf with the thrall, kill a MaA with a cursed spirit and get some fireball action on his dragonmarked hier and shield gaurd, but of course they both saved.
Round three: Thrall takes a MaA and moves to help Vlaakith when the dragonmarked and sheildgaurd come near. Glen had MW the shieldgaurd this game (good adaptation from our previous match) so although AC would help DR would not. I also knew as soon as things got close the Solar was going to come and play. i think I lost a cursed spirt to the dragonmarked heir this round but am unsure.
Round four: the crap really hits the fan here. Vlaakith takes 15 from the shield gaurd and the dragonmark makes her way near, as does the solar. my cursed spirt tries the incorp charge flank across the pit to the sheild gaurd but no go. Solar double moves and threatens the thrall via reach. So the Thrall double moves around and has him on the slippery slope but will only get one hit if he hits. Glen moves up his MaA to the side VA. I can't get the solar with disentigrate because of the shield gaurdian but if the gaurdian fails his save he's dead thanks to the fireball... he makes his save as holding the disentigrate isn't going to help any more. I now know I'm in deep trouble.
Round 5: I win init finally and the thrall hits the solar for 20 and slides him near the pit and away from melee reach of Vlaakith. I then move 8 away and base the remaining MaA knowing Vlaakith will survive this round and I'll need all the HP I can get. His dragonmarked and shield gaurd kill my remaing cused spirit unfortunately and solar lays 25 down on Vlaakith. Vlaakith responds with 10 (which gets split to 5 and 5) of her own and paralizes the Solar. Thrall kills the MaA and moves to striking distance.
Round 6: I got init again. Vlaakith hits for 20 Thrall moves to intercept the Dragonmarked heir and hits the solar for 40 (reduced to 20 and 20) and now the solar gets unparalized, the sheild gaurdian runs away with 5hp and the bodygaurd sidesteps to flank the thrall hitting twice.
The next few rounds are blurry for me as i scramble to make things work before time runs out or i lose on pts.  basically I didn't know you could sidestep diagonally partially through an enemy's square (too much rpg i expect) so the dragonmarked hier was able to get adjecent to the solar a round sooner than i'd hoped. She started taking dmg for the solar and paralysis. This allowed the thrall to kill her too for more hp but still in death range for the round. Solar made his moral check and the sheild gaurdian killed the thrall to avoid new thrall save.
Final round: Vlaakith hits one more time and steps away as she's at 45 hp and I want the solar to get only 2 swings instead of three. I park her in between some slippery slope in hopes of a paralysis and pit push if he misses and I win init. Solar hits on the AoO. Glen thinks about it and moves his solar into melee reach range but changes his mind and says "what the hell, the solar charges". He rolls a 5. Without that last second adjustment I would have lived another round. Alas, it was not to be...
So, my mistakes and my band problems as I see it:
Vs. Glen- poor placement and lack of specific knowledge really beat me here. If my VDW would have been 2 over or my other cursed spirt 1 over there would have been no slaying arrow. What I had hoped was to get the thrall above 105 and then use him to block the next few rounds. Poor decision. The sidestep rule killed me too. If i'd had known that his solar would have had to have taken out my thrall and forced the save rather than avoiding it via Shieldgaurdian.
My band: After winning 8 straight with this band I was on cloud nine come finals. its weakness is vs. triple or quad black and Ulmo Swarm. Any other band it can beat at least 50% of the time and if played well and a save or two failed your up to about 70% against anything. it is 7 acts and that hurts more than i thought and lacks a way to clear fodder at range.  either of these additions would help greatly. This is a truely powerful band. You should probably start practicing. It has qualified twice now and there was one other Vlaakith band at our qual... though it had a caller in the dark which i don't agree with at all.
so there it is. I went 5-1 and took third. Sad... I really beat myself and am beating myself up over beating myself... That being said there was some awesome competetion across the table. Well played Glen... Good luck to all the Gen-con'rs... Maybe i'll see you there... maybe I won't...

| Lord_Rock: Minor correction in your analysis of our game (game 5): my VC actually needed a 6 and an 8 to hit you, not a 6 and an 11 (the 2ndary attack for the VC is only two worse than the primary). And still I missed both times. *sigh*.
Another thing of note with regard to Josh's triple blacks in the final round, where he lost the Thrall to the slaying arrow at the outset--we had practiced against each other prior to the event, and I had hit him with a confusion spell with my warband in the same way.
However, as I think we can all attest, after four or five rounds of play without any significant breaks, it's easy to get sloppy and miss things that you might otherwise have caught. So your ability to endure and still be sharp by the end of the tournament is an oft overlooked but important factor in winning. Of course, being lucky enough not to face a top player/warband in your first round is another! D'oh!

Resiliency is definatly an attibute that is overlooked in the tourny scene. I know in the last game against glen I was forgetting things left and right (along side learning some new things just to make things more difficult)...
and the info... Kyle E. Rakoz aka lord_rock and I used the Frostfell Rift
