Despite the very nice weather, we managed to pull together a few intrepid souls who made the trek down to Odyssey 2000 for their weekly Saturday tournament. We were expecting a couple more than 5, but I expect the abundance of sunshine had something to do with that. Anyway - here's what happened:

The bands:

Map: King's Road

Caldorna (2-1)

Map: ?

Round 1:
Tem def. Caldorna

Infurnace def. BYE

Round 2:
Tem def. Tomcat
Caldorna def. Infurnace
John def. BYE

Round 3:
Tem def. Infurnace
Caldorna def. John
Tomcat def. BYE

For my first matchup, I was paired against Caldorna who is still relatively new to the game but is learning in leaps and bounds. He is playing the Solar band and with so many hitpoints, it will be tough for me to drop him before he can cause a great deal of damage to my warband. Even his lowly +7 attack will hit my beaters at least half the time. I was fortunate enough to win my map, so I could effectively prevent him from using his slaying arrow or his greater reach in melee. When he moved forward very aggressively in the second round, I knew it was going to turn into quite a scrum. Since 180hp worth of his warband was immune to acid, I would have to rely on my melee attacks. I managed to flank the Solar with both dragons, an Orc warrior and Ryld. The thrall on the other hand was a round away since he took out a tile grabber to go up to 85hp. After winning the next initiative, I managed to put quite a hurt on the Solar but most of the damage was distributed so that the Dragonmark only had 15hp left. After he activated both the Solar and the Shield Guardian he thankfully missed one attack against Ryld which means he would live to see another initiative roll. For my second phase that round, my orc warrior decided to attack the Dragonmark and rolled a crit killing him. I continued to beat on the Solar with my other dragon and the Shield Guardian was now down to 20hp thanks to taking some of the hits. I finished it off with the Thrall who could just get there with a single move. I won initiative again in the next round and managed to use Ryld and a dragon to force a morale save on the Solar before it killed Ryld and morale checked my LBD. Thankfully I passed the +10 save and proceeded to drop the Solar once the rest of my hitters had a chance to activate. It was actually a very close game because if the +7 attack of the Solar had dropped Ryld in the previous round, he probably would have won the next initiative as well and finished off a LBD as well.

My second matchup was against Tomcat who was playing the obligatory CWWs in a slightly different build using a Village Priest at the helm. I won my map and this looked like it would be very much a rematch of a game we had played a couple weeks prior. He decided this time to split his forces and set up two CWWs with a bat in the forward start area of Hellspike. He won first turn initiative and made me go first. with his 11 activations, he'd have 5 more to move after I was done for the turn. I advanced as usual, using the smoke so that he could not target my creatures with spells directly. Although this would completely prevent him from using the rays, I was sure the bats would be lightning rods if I wasn't careful. For my last pair of activations of the first round, I double moved the Thrall to his forward start area and used his haste attack to take out a bat. This freed up enough space for my LBD to doublemove and base both CWWs there and completely prevent them from moving away. Of course, he managed to hit with both melee attacks but it was certainly still better than lightning bolts. The details of this match are a little fuzzy, but I remember routing almost every one of his CWWs at one point or another. I knew I needed to take out the Village priest so that they couldn't rally, but when I tried to do that, my LBD suffered a crit AoO and ended up routing himself! Luckily, he didn't get off the board and I retreated both Ryld and the other LBD to make sure he could rally. By this point, though, he still could not effectively target me with spells since I was on the other side of the smoke. I quickly moved up and based both CWWs he had left after using my final breath weapon. He tried to move away and my AoOs took out the wizards and he conceded the game.

Despite being the only 2-0 player, this venue always runs 3 rounds with 5+ players so I end up facing Infurnace with his Psychic warband. I again won my map thanks to Ryld and this game also quickly became a big melee. I used a breath weapon to take out all of the shock troopers at the start of round 2 and moved forward aggressively with the Thrall. After rolling a 1 on an attack though, he couldn't finish off a Soul Knife and ended up short on hp. He was eventually taken out by the Inspired Lieutenant's hostile empathic transfer which didn't trigger A New Thrall. I still managed to drop the Soul knife eventually then I jumped all over the Tsucora Quori. On the way over, I used an orc warrior to attack Ragnara who rolled a crit and took her out. I believe I had both dragons and all three orc warriors in flanking positions around the Tsucora. After a round of hits (and a couple from the OWs too!) I forced a morale save which he failed. On the way out, I managed to connect with 4 AoOs for a total of 55 damage to drop him and the game was conceded. I think Infurnace had been plagued all day of rolling 3s and 4s way more than he should. Time to get a new d20!
