Despite the wonderful weather we had today, we still managed to get enough people out to run the tournament at Odyssey2000. I decided to go back to a variation on a band I had used in the past. Here’s what happened:

The bands:

Temysry (3-0)

Cleric of Sune
Frenzied Berserker
Gnome Trickster
Xen'drik Champion x3
Devis, Half-Elf Bard
Bat Familiar
Wild Elf Raider
Map: Magma Keep

Zak X (2-1 with a bye)

Drow Cleric of Lolth
Marilith
Large Black Dragon
Orc Wardrummer
Cursed Spirit
Hunting Hyena
Gnoll x2
Map: Dungeon of Blood

Nephelim (2-1 with a bye)

Young Master
Githzerai Monk x4
Sun Soul Initiate x2
Hill Dwarf Warrior
Map: Dragon Graveyard

Zuran Alda (1-2 with a bye)

Nentyar Hunter
Bonded Fire Summoner
Magma Hurler x2
Crow Shaman
Graycloak Ranger
Timber Wolf
Xeph Warrior
Map: Dragondown Grotto

Caldorna (1-2)

Red Hand War Sorcerer
Devourer
Greenspawn Razorfiend
Half-Elf Hexblade
Azer Fighter
Acheron Goblin
Greenspawn Sneak
Kobold Monk
Map: Drow Outpost

Round 1:

Temysry def. Caldorna
Zak X def. Nephelim
Zuran Alda def. BYE

Round 2:

Temysry def. Zak X
Caldorna def. Zuran Alda
Nephelim def. BYE

Round 3:

Temysry def. Zuran Alda
Nephelim def. Caldorna
Zak X def. BYE

For my first round, I was paired up against Caldorna. It seems every time he shows up we end up paired together on the first round. This was his first time he had made a band completely on his own and using only the minis he owns. I think it’s a pretty good start. Anyway – I won map and side initiative so we were playing on Magma Keep. I’m not sure why I picked this map but it worked out ok for me in the end. I started by picking off his sneak with some shots with my Xendriks then managed to keep everyone close enough together to catch everyone in the invisibility sphere at the end of the round. The next round, we simply advanced and met in the middle. Of course, since I was invisible there weren’t many blows being traded. In the third round, he managed to get a lightning bolt off, targeting his own Razorfiend to catch two Xendriks and Devis. Unfortunately, he failed both SR checks and Devis made the save but routed. I managed to get his commander within 6 of CoS so that my invisible Berserker could run between his guys and get an attack off on his commander, doing 35 damage. After that, I used the Xendrik to flank the Razorfiend and after a couple hits and a SS hit from the Berserker, he failed his morale check. After that, the devourer managed to draw close one of my xendriks but missed both of his attacks due to conceal. I quickly got everyone around the devourer and took him down relatively quickly. I finished the round by healing the berserker with the bat. In the last round, he conceded since everyone was either dead or routing… and my FB ends the game with 90 hp.

My second round game was against ZakX who had a worrisome band with a marilith and a LBD who would be able to put quite a hurt on my band since invisibility wasn’t going to help me too much. I won my map and side so we played on Magma Keep. We advanced in the first round and I managed to get tile points while he didn’t. In the second round, he used the breath weapon targeting his own Gnoll to hit two of my Xendriks. One passed the save but the other failed and took 25 but passed morale. After that, I used one Xendrik to hit the dragon for 20 and the FB to hit it for another 35 causing a morale save which he passed. In the next round, he won initiative and dropped 60 damage into the FB and took out my wounded Xendrik with the Marilith. I responded by killing the LBD and Cursed Spirit with a full attack by the FB and healed him using the bat. I used the Xendriks to block off his Marilith from getting to the wounded FB before I could have a chance to use him again. With one Xendrik dead, the Marilith routed another and put a couple hits into the third as well. After hitting the Marilith twice, he was down to 65 hp. In the next round, I managed to move up with the FB who hit the Marilith twice using a SS from the Gnome. The FB was now severely wounded and died from attacks from both the Orc Wardrummer and Cleric. My deathstrike connected with is commander and took him out. This pushed me over 200 for the win.

My last round of the day was against Zuran Alda who had put together another dual Magma Hurler band. Of course, even after winning his map, it was an uphill battle since my entire warband was going to be invisible and he couldn’t target me with ranged attacks until I had made all my first attacks. In the third round, I managed to get to the Bonded Fire Summoner and take him out with a series of attacks by Xendriks which caused a morale save and he ran off the board. Since his summons and magma hurlers went with him, he conceded the game.
