| Greater Vancouver Qualifier aka Surrey Qualifier Report: 13 Attendees, of which I don’t have all the individual warbands but a beholder was spotted as was a umm interesting kord, archmage renegade warlock band.. Top 4 after Swiss Rounds:
1. Joe P 5-0(Storm, Virtuous Charger, Valanar Nomad Charger, 2 CWW, fodder, Kings Road) 2. Joel B aka Kezghan 4-1(Quad Black, Forest Cliff Lair) 3. Joe Q aka thenameless 3-2( Arcane Ballista, Sword of Heironeous, Couatl, 2 War Weavers, 2 Bats, Man @ Arms, Dragondown Grotto) 4. Weder 3-2(Ghaele Eladrin, Lyrander Skyfire Captain, Wild Elf Warsinger, 2 Xeph, Bat, Kings Road) Into playoff rounds Joe P (qualified in Lacy, WA) drops as does our Brazilian guest Weder(awesome showing man). Added to the final 4 for playoff: 5. Greg Morrison(sp?) 3-2 (Ultroforge variant w/ 5 kobold miners, Keep of Fallen Kings) 6. Shaun Webb aka Darksteed 3-2 (Tri-loth, 3 kobold miners, blue, Kings Road) Shaun concedes to Joel B (me), Joe Q beats Greg in a tight (the ballista was killed on Dragondown) battle. Final Joel vs Joe Q, Quad Blacks vs Ballista on Grotto. Blacks win after having 3 dragons crawl across the board, get a lucky break with a LOS error and squeak out a victory. Very hard match, well played for the most part by both players, if I had to lose to anyone id pick Joe Q every time. I also received a lot of support from Team DDMVAN (special thanks to Shaun Webb, Joe Q and to thee Elgaardian WarWizard) , and am very thankful to have been added to the team recently and hope to keep up the excellent standards of sportsmanship and competition fostered by this Team. You all know who you are, thank you so much. | | Top 8 at 2008 Constructed Championships. Orienthrall Express baby!

| Greetings all,
I attended the First annual (hopefully) DDM Vancouver qualifier this weekend. I can honestly say that I was the best player there who was not playing. Having done well in Lacy WA tournament I was forbidden to play in Vancouver. I attended as an UNOFFICIAL judge. Everyone from our area who might be qualified to judge (other than our store sponser) was already playing in the tournament. Happily I can report that nobody challenged any rulings I made and that I did not make any errors (that i know of) except for one army that had 3 pts too many and was adjusted down to the required 200 before the tournament began. (you know who you are)
Now to the fun part. This was a unique experince for me as a player to have the time to actually watch any and all matches at a tournament. In Lacy i played for 12 hours and had no chance to watch the other players at all.
The bands, as i remember them: (11 of the 13)
2 Storm, Virtuous Charger, Valanar Nomad Charger, 2 CWW, fodder, 2 Ultralforge bands...one with kobolds one with goblins and kobolds... (funny note below) 1 beholder, dark naga, 4 archon goblins, helmed horror 1 Gattling gun (Thenameless above) 1 Quad Black (Kezghan above) GRATZ AGAIN!! 1 Tri loth (Darksteed above) 1 Gith monk band (4 monk, YM, 2 wolves, standard bearer) 1 Ghaele (Weder above) 1 triple threat (Kord, archmage, R warlock) 2 more which I cannot remember (appologies to those individuals)
At one point early in the ultraforge bands mirror matchup the goblins and kobolds were all fighting it out in one victory area on Keep of the Fallen Kings.. they missed each other a lot, but all suceeded on morale saves. (wish i had a picture of that)
As an additional note I would like to add extra kudos to both Joe P and Weder for dropping out to allow others who had not previously qualified the chance to go to gencon. (look for us we should be easy to spot)
Sportsmanship was displayed throughout the day, even when I had to rule against the same player twice in 2 consecutive matches, he did not get upset. More kudos to Weder. And even more because he won one of those matches despite a rule going against him.
Oddly, only Brazil invaded our qualifier. Has everyone else who wanted to already qualified? Calgary --where were you? Some of our guys were looking for rematches (big grin).
Look for a future post "the war wizard academy" where I may hint out a few of my favorite 'magic using' pieces!
| | You know if you move that piece there you only have a 5% chance to win, and if you don't make it you will lose in 3 rounds. Of course if you don't move it there you will lose in 2 rounds. | |

| The other 2 bands were this:
TBS aka AngelGuard, Solar, SG, DMH, fodder on Tome of Queen Peregrine and then a tricky band: High Inquisitor, Warpriest of Moradin, Arcanix Guards and a Kolyrut, fodder on Dragon Shrine.
The your making a morale check band did slay an Ultraforge band. Damn ultroloths who cant make an MC...

| Hi All,
I had a great time at Vancouver's first-ever DDM Championship qualifier. Well, let's get down to the nitty-gritty. My warband and map are already listed above.
Round 1
Joseph Patenaude: Storm, Virt Charger, Valenar N Charger, 2 CWW, filler
He won map (King's Road), and that spelled the end for me. He played it right, denying the Ballista any shooting lanes, while scoring VP in the A/B scoring area. I gambled by advancing my Ballista onto open ground. The horses pounced, the CWW's put some lines through me, and that was that. 0-1
Round 2
Chris Slater: High Inquisitor, Warpriest of Moradin, Kolyarut, Arcanix Guards
He won map (Dragon Shrine). I full moved the Ballista into a good shooting position in the first round. In the subsequent rounds, he led with his Arcanix Guards (I was able to kill all of them), but was able to deny me any of his key pieces. His warband was a little too slow to be of any real threat to the Ballista, and time was called with me winning on points. 1-1
Round 3
Jason Woodall: Storm, Virt Charger, Val N Charger, 2 CWW, filler.
It was a shooting gallery for the Ballista. I tried to "ground" both horses with my Couatl, but they both passed. Jason did a good job of hiding his advance in the first round, but eventually he had to open up. I believe that one of the Chargers routed, while the other was killed outright. Storm and the CWW's advanced into the pit to try and lay down some lines, but the retaliation fire was too much. 2-1
Round 4
Joel Barnabe (good friend): Quad Blacks
He won. 2-2
Round 5
Greg Friesen: Beholder, Dark Naga, Helmed Horror, filler
I won the fire-fight on the Grotto. 3-2
Top 4 (I reached third by way of tie-breakers)
Semi-final, Greg Morrison: Ultroforge, Kobold Miners
I won map (big sigh of relief). His team took a lot of damage crossing over to my side of the Grotto, but all three of the big pieces made it across. He manages to slaughter all but the Couatl and a MaA, but is only left with an Ultroloth at 5 HP. I check VP (properly this time), and realize that I am ahead, and only need three rounds of tile points for the win. The Couatl flies to the centre, while the MaA scores. Ultroloth makes a valiant chase back into the valley, but it's too little, too late.
Other semi-final, Joel Barnabe wins with his Quad Blacks
Final
I win map (big sigh of relief again). Joel had beaten me the night before in two successive practice matches on his map (Forest Cliff Lair). Round 1, I cast LUG, and two Dragons lost flight. It's starting to look good, or so I thought. He moved into covered areas really well, and denied me some shots. I made two mistakes, which together, probably cost the game. I inadvertently gave one of his walking dragons AC+8 when he was able to base my MaA while crossing the Grotto (this made me miss a key shot). The other mistake was thinking that I had LoS to a dragon, casting Snake's Swiftness, and shooting at nothing (if I had advanced the Ballista one more square, I believe I could have made a killing shot on an injured dragon). Too many dragons got across the Grotto that day, and it spelled my doom. Even considering my two mistakes, Joel played well enough to win. He deserves the title of being Vancouver's first champion.
Congratulations Joel! As much as I would have liked to win, losing to you is not so bad. | | Over 270 successful online DDM trades.

| I first want congratulations, Joe Q. (Thenameless), you are a great player ( play very well), and to lent the miniatures for me. I didn't forget the hamburgues and the soccer game. Thank's for all, and we'll have many miniatures games together.
I want congratulations the other people that annouced this Qualifier.
I'm rarely satisfaction for to player against very well players.
Thank's! | | | |
