| The Thursday Knights had a moderate showing of 7 players tonight. As Night Below draws near, it gets harder and harder to keep trying new warbands without being able to use the minis that have been spoiled thus far.
After our most recent drop-off, I believe we have now donated about 400+ lbs of food through our "Will Game for Food Project". Our next major charity event will be the 24 hour D&D marathon. You can check out all the details here: http://www.gelatinousdudes.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1436
Anyway - on to the games.

My first match of the night was against Caldorna. I'm pretty sure that he and I have been paired together in the first round for every tournament we've ever both played in. Just prior to the tournament, we were discussing each other's bands and I was quite curious how Mordy + CC would fare against our regular crew. I ended up winning map and side so we played on Hellspike. The first round, we both advanced towards the centre and I kept my two redspawn fairly well spaced so they both couldn't be caught in his cone of cold. He won second round init and managed to use his warrior skeleton to target his empowered cone over a couple fodder pieces and one of my redspawn. I failed the save and took 80 damage but thankfully passed morale. In order to save my redspawn, I first moved up my Wardrummer and switched to countersong.I managed to take out the fodder basing him using an attack from an Orc warrior and one of his own attacks then moved away to "safety" behind my other hitters. His CC went after the other redspawn and the Marilith managed to get a full attack off, dropping him to 20 IIRC. After winning the next initiative, I finished him off with another belch and ran up to base mordy. After that it was pretty much all over since the Marilith was unhurt and he had no real way to hurt her. We played it out and Mordy dropped in the following round.
My second match was against Zuran Alda who was playing PDK+2xSG - a band put together by Rubberman who couldn't make it tonight. It's scary to face all those fear cones - especially since my Marilith is known for having failed morale at +18 multiple times. I lost map and side and was forced to start from the cold side of Dragonshrine. I again spread my forces out and was doubly sure to keep everyone in command at all times - one failed morale and they'd be off the board. During the game, however, he opted not to use his fear cones and instead tried to beat me down since I had relatively low AC and it was "caves of pain". I concentrated my forces on one Shield Guardian then the other since they were the lead figures. They both dropped thanks to a couple belches (for 15) each followed up by attacks by the Marilith. I could only do this thanks to one very important initiative roll that IMO decided the game. The Marilith fell to attacks from the PDK after this and despite things looking grim for my opponent, I still had to try and hit AC 25 with my +11 attacks since I didn't have enough belches left to finish off the PDK. My dice were with me, however and I rolled 2-3 great attacks in a row to eventually pin him down. Since both redspawn were still uninjured, he conceded. I could have had an unlucky streak at the end, but I believe I would have gone over 200 first anyway thanks to my getting tile points every round while he did not.
The final match of the night was against the only other undefeated band - Zak X's Strahd/Death Knight band. I again lost map and side so we were playing on Mithril Mines. Since most of my minis were immune to fire, I was in pretty good shape against his abyssal blast. I knew that if I could get close enough, it would be pretty easy to drop the Death Knight with belches but he would be able to retaliate for two 30 damage swings thanks to undead torch. We both positioned for the first two rounds as I spent time killing some of his kobolds who in turn killed an orc warrior and even critted the Marilith. At the end of the second round, the score was 25-23 in my favour since I had killed his Dark Moon Monk while he had only killed one orc. With my activation advantage, I was eventually able to drop the death knight with three belches and one marilith attack but not before he hit the marilith with both attacks, dropping her to 40hp. Now I swarmed Strahd but with such low attack bonuses and his ability to heal, it could still go both ways. He started by using Night's Caress on the Marilith and I thankfully passed the save. He was pretty low by this point, but after winning the following init, he dropped the marilith and gained 15 hp back. I only connected with one belcher so we was again sitting at 10 hp and based by two belchers. I won the next init (which was rare for me in this game) and connected with one of the belchers. He respawned in a victory area, but was still within striking distance of my other belcher who ran up and dealt the killing blow. It still could have been a very close game if either of those attacks missed since he would probably continue to heal as much damage I could do per round.

Nice. One thing that's really turned me off bands like this though is the ability for many opponents to take out the commander. After that, your best morale save is at +10. I think that's one reason bands that use the WWL, for instance, tend to work fairly well despite the lower commander rating.
On the other hand - you certainly have a lot of damage potential there as long as you're lucky with some key rolls.

That is pretty much most 1 commander.... non-war drummer warbands. | | Champion of the Brainstealer Dragon Desert of Desolation Called Shot: Medium Brown Dragon ***Winner of WBC VIII and XII*** | |

Well yes - that's the point. These days, when I play CE, I'll almost always use beefy commander (WWL or Ryld) unless I was also planning on using the wardrummer - in which case both tieflings are pretty good choices. | | A Proud Gelatinous Dude

| | Very true...I defintely see your point. I wouldn't be taking this marilith build any where but a local tourny. I figured Marilith + 2x LBD is pretty damn beefy vs. local stuff. | | Champion of the Brainstealer Dragon Desert of Desolation Called Shot: Medium Brown Dragon ***Winner of WBC VIII and XII*** | |
