| Odyssey 2000 ran our pre-release this time around and with 20 players showing, we were a little lighter than last time, but some of the people who usually travel to our events couldn't make the trip due to it being the Canada Day long weekend and having other plans.
My pulls:
Wulfgar Skeletal Courser Medusa Archer Champion of Dol Dorn Arcadian Avenger Babau Assassin Ice Mephit Guard of Mithril Hall x2 Delver Sergeant Greyhawk City Militia Sergeant Kobold Trapmaker Kuo-Toa Hunter Darkmantle Prisoner Greater Barghest (promo)
My warband:
Greyhawk City Militia Sergeant Wulfgar Champion of Dol Dorn Greater Barghest Skeletal Courser Ice Mephit Darkmantle Prisoner 196 points, 8 activations Map: Mushroom Cavern
Round 1: vs. Grubbis
Guardian Naga Greyhawk City Militia Sergeant Greater Basilisk Greater Barghest Giant Eagle Drow Enforcer Deep Legionnaire Kobold Trapmaker Map: King's Road
I ended up losing map initiative so we were playing on King's Road. In the first round, we both advanced towards the shared victory area. For his last activation, he used his power dive and hit my Ice Mephit who failed the save. Fortunately, I still had Wulfgar to activate who connected with his ranged attack and sent the Eagle routing off the board. I managed to get tile points with my darkmantle while he did not. I don't remember a lot of the details except that his Basilisk was just in the central victory area while he left his invisible Barghest just in front of him (also in the victory area). I decided to try and take out the Basilisk as quickly as possible using all my hitters while harrassing his Guardian Naga at the same time. In the third round, he managed a gaze attack against Wulfgar who was basing him but I thankfully passed the save and dropped him by the end of the round. In the fourth round, his Guardian Naga routs from an AoO and although he still has a full (invisible) Barghest, he concedes the game since my main hitters are all relatively healthy. (1-0)
Round 2: vs. Tomcat
Lady Vol Kalastar Bodyguard Greater Barghest Guard of Mithril Hall Deep Legionnaire Prisoner Map: Dungeon of Blood
I was certainly not happy to see a bodyguarded Lady Vol across from me. He won map and I knew from the get-go that I would have to drop the Bodyguard first and hope to stay up on points for as long as possible. My Darkmantle managed first round tile points while my Skeletal courser managed to get a hit in on his over extended bodyguard after a double move. Otherwise, I kept my pieces fairly spaced out and tried to take out his prisoners adjacent ally (deep legionnaire) with a ranged attack from Wulfgar, but missed. In the second round, he connected but it passed morale. He then managed to rout my prisoner and put some damage into my champion of Dol Dorn and GCMS using his acid breath weapon. In return, I managed to take out his deep legionnaire with my skeletal courser and continuing my double move to block the prisoner from getting to any other ally before the end of the round - earning me the extra 10vp from chained. In the third round, I manged to kill his Guard of Mithril Hall while none of his allies based any of mine, so the free attack was wasted. He finished off my Darkmantle and GCMS and routed the champion of Dol Dorn. He eventually rallied, but things were looking grim. Wulfgar ended up between the Barghest and Lady Vol. He eventually failed his morale save and ran off the board. I eventually finished off the bodyguard who wasn't near Vol with my Barghest, gaining the extra 10 hp bringing him back to 40 after a passed morale save. I then concentrated my only remaining pieces on his Barghest who was in his victory area. Once he finally dropped, my Champ of Dol Dorn was also dead and the Skeletal Courser was at 5 hp. At this point, time was called and we were to finish the last round. It was very tight since I had gained extra rounds of tile points and the 10 bonus from chained. We tallied the scores and it was 171-163 in my favour. I had won the last initiative with no commander, so after the Barghest dropped, my Barghest ran to the central victory area while the skeletal courser doublemoved to the far victory area so that he couldn't be killed off. I was definitely going to be getting victory points this round so his only option was to kill one of my creatures. The Courser was now too far away and my Barghest was at 40 hp. He last hope was to knock him into the pit with a forcewave. He moved up and cast the spell but I passed the save making the final score 181-163 with Lady Vol untouched. A very close game indeed! (2-0)
Round 3: vs. Nemesis
Warpriest of Vandria Brass Golem Greater Barghest Arcadian Avenger Bluespawn Ambusher Krenshar Prisoner Map: Blue Dragon Lair
For the first (and only) time, I won my map and we played on Mushroom Cavern. This was probably the best time for me to get it since I really wasn't looking foward to a charging Golem. In the first round, we both advanced with his Barghest moving into my victory area (which he thought was his own - doh!) and my darkmantle in my victory area with the risky terrain. He sent his Krenshar and Arcadian Avenger down towards my Darkmantle while everyone else came towards the top victory areas. In the second round, I managed to kill his Krenshar with my Darkmantle but was killed in turn by the Avenger. I made an aggressive move with my Courser to hit his prisoner, hoping for a rout. Unfortunately, he passed morale and stood his ground. I also used Wulfgar's line attack to wound his golem and rout his bluespawn ambusher who eventually rallied. He retreated some of his troops to kill my courser so I took up a position with my invisible barghest blocking the entrance to the top victory areas while my prisoner was safely tucked in the back poised to gain 20 vp per round. He managed to kill the courser and ice mephit who had coned a group of his units after I finished off his prisoner. At the end of the third round, the score now stood at 52-47 despite the fact that all his points were from kills while 40 of mine were from tile points. He used Vandria's Heal to bring everyone back up 15 hp and advanced on my position again. He started swinging at the Barghest and I thankfully passed morale after he had connected twice with the golem on consecutive attacks. His bluespawn burrowed under the wall and shocked Wulfgar and my GCMS who routed and also failed the rally check, running off the board. Wulfgar killed the bluespawn in return and took the GHMS's position guarding the prisoner. My Champion of Dol Dorn moved up to the front line and attacked his Barghest who had made his way through the spike stones to join melee. After a feat of strength attack, his barghest routed off the board while my champion had taken a lot of damage in return. At this point time was called (in the 5th round). My Barghest never made an attack, but gaining 30 extra vp from the prisoner really paid off, making the final score 142-60. (3-0)
Round 4: vs. Zak X
Delver Sergeant Aspect of Loviatar Clawborn Scorrow Champion of Dol Dorn Kobold Trapmaker Deep Legionnaire Map: Teleport Temple
This was a band I was a little scared to face simple because the Aspect has enough hp to stick around and can really dish out some damage. He won his map and side so we played on Teleport Temple. In the first round, I won initiative and managed to double move my courser to take out his darkmantle sitting on a victory area. My darkmantle managed to get me tile points in the difficult terrain victory area since he was hidden. Otherwise, we both moved out to grab victory areas. In the second round, he got his gnome to a victory area and started to advance on my position. I took out his Kobold Trapmaker on a teleporter with the courser and then occupied that teleporter as well. He then made an aggressive move with the Aspect - doublemoving to base my Champion of Dol Dorn and Prisoner on their way to a victory area. I responded by moving my Ice Mephit to a position where I could cone and catch his commander who failed morale and ran off the board. I also flanked the Aspect with the Greater Barghest and hit with his attack. This openned up a charge lane for Wulfar who also joined the fray, connecting for another 25 damage. Now with a 3 point CR advantage, I won the next initiative and with two full attacks (including using the Champion of Dol Dorn's feat of strength), I dropped the Aspect before she got an attack off. We continued to play it out, but I was now gaining 20 vp a round with the prisoner and already had a significant point advantage. I eventually took out his tile grabber and when the Champion of Dol Dorn routed, it pushed me over 200 points. (4-0)
Round 5: vs. Orcdoubleax
Delver Sergeant Wulfgar Dracotaur Greater Barghest x2 Kuo-Toa Hunter Darkmantle Map: Teleport Temple
After 4 completed rounds, there were only two undefeated players and our warbands were remarkably similar - both featuring a common commander, Wulfgar, Barghest and Darkmantle. He won his map so we played on Teleport Temple. I won the "good" side this time and we both started by advancing to grab teleporters and collecting victory points with the darkmantles. He made an aggressive move by teleporting his Wulfgar to my side of the map and occupying the teleporter in the corner. In the second round, I won initiative, moving my prisoner into my victory area and activating my darmantle to "protect" him. He responded by moving his Wulfgar to a point off a teleporter in the middle of my forces to use his line attack on my Wulfgar, the darkmantle and prisoner. On a very good stroke of luck, all three passed the saves and stood their ground. My skeletal courser spent the round hunting down his Delver Sergeant who failed morale and ran off the board after being hit. I also used my Ice Mephit's cone to eliminate his darkmantle and inhibit his Kuo-Toa standing on a teleporter. He killed my Darkmantle anyway using the Dracotaur, but Wulfgar moved up to take his spot, protecting the prisoner and hitting the dracotaur in the process. In the third round, I managed full attacks with my Greater Barghest and Wulfgar to drop the Dracotaur while my Ice Mephit forced a morale save on the Kuo-Toa who failed and ran off the board. He then ganged up on Wulfgar who took shots from both his Wulfgar and a Greater Barghest. I failed the morale save and my biggest hitter ran off the board. The Champion of Dol Dorn moved in to attack an enemy Barghest while my GCMS doublemoved to be adjacent to the prisoner again. At this point the score was 124-70 in my favour. He took a chance and attacked the prisoner with Wulfgar's ranged attack, finishing him off with a Barghest when I failed morale. Wulfgar then ran away to avoid getting pinned between the Champion of Dol Dorn and my Barghest. Unfortunately, I could still pin him using my Barghest and the courser after teleporting in and charging Wulfgar for 25 damage. When I won the next initiative, I plugged the hole with the Champ and Wulfgar couldn't move and finished him off with attacks bringing the score to 188-101. He then used a rather interesting tactic - he killed off my Ice Mephit and Champ and was planing on using both barghests to block my victory areas in a way that since I only had large bases left, I could not get into either of them. Unfortunately, he had to take an AoO with his most wounded one and I managed to connect, dropping him for the win. (5-0)
Cut to top 4:
Despite earlier reports that there would be no cut to top 4, they announced there would be a cut to top 4 which included myself in first, Orcdoubleax in second, Goff in third and Scott B. in fourth. It was getting quite late, however, and Goff decided to drop, giving Orcdoubleax a free berth into the final. I played against Scott B to determine the other finalist:
Round 6: vs. Scott B.
Delver Sergeant Large Shadow Dragon Greater Barghest x2 Wild Mage Gnoll Claw Fighter Krenshar Darkmantle Map: Blue Dragon Lair
As has been my luck during the tournament, I lost map and side initiative again playing from the more hidden side of Blue Dragon Lair. His Darkmantle randomly started in his victory area which is suprisingly secluded. Mine started in the central victory area but was relatively safe due to hide. We spent the first round advancing troops and I managed to avoid any first turn spells from his wildmage by using my ice mephit as a screener. At the end of the round, he shadowjumped the dragon in and used his breath weapon on the Champion of Dol Dorn, Courser and Prisoner. The only one to fail the save was the prisoner who then routed. He didn't make it off the map but my GCMS was there to protect him for the time being. I used my last activation to use my darkmantle to attack his Gnoll Claw Fighter who connected but he passed the constrict save. 10-10. In the second round, I won initiative and used the darkmantle again to hit for another 10 damage and he again passed the save. He retaliated by killing the darkmantle and running away. He then took a full attack against the Courser with the Shadow Dragon but only hit with one attack leaving me with 30 hp. He then shadow jumped away to relative safety. I followed up with a ice mephit cone, hitting his Krenshar, Gnoll and a barghest sitting in the victory area. I then used Wulfgar's line attack to hit that same Barghest (though he passed the save) as well as the Gnoll and Shadow Dragon who both failed the save. I protected Wulfgar by putting the Champion of Dol Dorn in front and he advanced both Barghests and attacked him, one of them hitting. With the lane now clear, my skeletal courser took a long route around and attacked his delver sergeant who failed morale and ran away. I then used the rest of my movement to base the wild mage. 66-31. I won initiative in the third round and started with another cone from the ice mephit, hitting the wild mage and shadow dragon. The wild mage was now down to 10 hp and based my my courser. I then used the champ of Dol Dorn's Feat of Strength to push one Bargest away with a 25 damage hit and missed the other barghest with the second attack. When he retaliated with an attack, he crit, dropping me to 30 hp. After my passed morale save, however, I got my free attack which connected for 25 damage and caused him to rout with no chance to rally since his commander was dead. The Shadow Dragon moved around attack my GCMS but I passed the resulting morale save. 105-41. The fourth round saw his routing Barghest run off the board while his Shadow Dragon finished off my Skeletal courser. I based his shadow dragon with my Barghest and ice mephit who was flanking with my GCMS. Wulfgar and my Champ of Dol Dorn made short work of his remaining Barghest bringing the score to 185-79. He won initative in the last round and decided to take three AoO with the Dragon to attack my Champ of Dol Dorn who only had 15 hp remaining. The GCMS and Ice Mephit both connected for 15 damage and my Barghest rolled a crit to drop the dragon before he got there. 233-79. (6-0)
Round 7: vs Orcdoubleax
So this was to be a rematch of round 5 but with the sun setting and a BBQ waiting for me elsewhere, Orcdoubleax offered to concede the game if we split the prizes for 1st and 2nd (4 boosters each). I agreed and we called it a day.
So the top four were:
Temysry Orcdoubleax Scott B. Goff (playing Warpriest of Vandria, Orc Banebreak Rider, Greater Barghest, Valiant Cavalry, Earth Mephit x2, Kuo-Toa Hunter, Darkmantle, Map: Teleport Temple)
