For the first time ever, we had a group travel from Ottawa (Gatineau) to Toronto for a Pre-release tournament.ÂWe usually go to Montreal which is a 2 hour drive instead of the 4 hour drive to Toronto, but the Montreal events are too popular.ÂThey have one of the biggest DDM communities anywhere, and their Night Below Pre-release was already full before we could decide what we were doing.  I really wanted to go to a Pre-release for this set so we decided to go on the long day-trip to Toronto.ÂThere were only two of us – we could have been more, but Ottawa is actually getting a Release Tournament for this set next weekend which curbed people’s enthusiasm to travel for the Pre-release.  It was nice to get to meet and play against some other people including Greyhaze who I’ve often read on the various boards.  There were 13 players in the Toronto Pre-release including two of us from greater Ottawa.ÂSurprisingly, no one pulled any Large Gold Dragons or Frost Giant Jarls.ÂThere were four Guardian Nagas, which is odd since there were only 26 boosters used in the tournament and there shouldn’t be any repeat rares in a case.ÂAlso, two players drew both Lady Vol and Wulfgar as their two rares.  The tournament was four swiss rounds with no extra rounds for semi-finals or finals.ÂThe fourth round battle for first between the two 3-0 warbands was between:  Guardian Naga, Greyhawk Sergeant, Shadow Dragon, Arcadian Avenger, Babau, Drow Enforcer, Krenshar, Deep Legionnaire  Lady Vol, Wulfgar, Kalashtar Bodyguard, Krenshar, Darkmantle  The two of us enjoyed the tournament and we’d like to travel to Toronto again at some point for another Pre-release.  It’s a very long day with 8+ hours of driving, so we wouldn’t want to do it for every release (especially in winter). |
