Matt Barry and myself did a double. We both played in Holmes, PA for the prerelease there at 10AM and then drove out to Atlantic City, NJ for the prerelease at Northfield, NJ at 7PM.
Ironically, Matt and I both went undefeated and faced off in the final match at both tournaments. Each time the game was close and could have gone either way but Matt was victorious both times to win both prereleases going 4-0 twice. I finished in second place at 3-1 twice.
We were allowed to use the Barghest promo at both places. Thank goodness, because the rest of my pulls were mediocre. In fact, in the first tournament I didn't play either rare. The rares were the Shadowbane Inquisitor and the Mind Flayer Lich. I almost ran the MFL instead of the second Champ of Dol Dorn but my overall hit points would have been lower and my activations would have only been 6. I decided to go with the 410hp / 8 activation band instead of the 350hp / 6 activation band.
Here are our bands:
Tournament #1 My band: Champion of Dol Dorn x2 Greater Barghest (Promo) Assassin Hobgoblin Marshal Delver Sergeant Kua-Toa Hunter Darkmantle
Matt's Band: Lady Vol Brass Golem Greyhawk City Militia Sergeant Prisoner Krenshar Deel Legionaire
I lost a close match to Matt. He won map init and chose the Dragon Shrine and the fire side. His plan was to turtle on the top victory area by the Tiamat statue and rack up double victory points with his prisoner. My slow plodding all melee band with no flight or ranged attacks had no way of getting to his prisoner so my only hope was to hack down Lady Vol and the Brass Golem. I closed with them as quickly as I could but over two or three rounds I kept missing the AC23 Golem by one and it took much longer to kill it than anticipated. I was finally able to base Lady Vol with both Champs after losing just the Barghest. However, Lady Vol just dominated me and when my two Champs of Dol Dorn failed MC at -3 from Aura of Fear I knew I was in trouble. The one Champ failed to rally twice to make it even worse. It would have been close otherwise. Matt went over 200 with me at 130. Lady Vol was down to about half hit points I think.
Tournament #2 My band: Greater Barghest x2 (One Promo, one pulled) Arcadian Avenger Hierophant of the Seventh Wind Shadow Delver Sergeant Kuo-Toa Hunter x2
Matt's Band: Greater Barghest (Promo) Warpriest of Vandria Greyhawk City Militia Sergeant Medusa Archer Wild Mage Ice Mephit Carnage Demon x2 Prisoner
My match against Matt was back and forth. At the end I was ahead 167-121. If I win init I can full attack his Barghest with my HotSW to bring it to MC. Matt wins the init and attacks the HotSW and it fails MC instead and routed off to make it 167-168 Matt. The next round I score 13 to his 10 and the score is now at 180-178 me. The last round we both have no commanders. I have two Barghests at 50hp each and he has one at 55hp. The next person to kill a Barghest will win. Matt wins init and hits my Barghest and it routes and goes off to win the game 180-213. I lose another close one to Matt. Matt won almost every initiative in this match and rolled extra damage for his wild mage every time.
Congratulations Matt. Those were some good competitive matches we played.
