My first matchup of the night was against Goff, and it was probably my closest match of the night. He won map and side, opting to start from the cold side of Dragonshrine. In the first round, he got 15 tile points thanks to the tombseeker while I only got 10. My Kobold managed a hit on his tombseeker bringing him to 40 hp. In the second round, I won initiative and charged the out of command tombseeker with Lady Vol. It was a big risk exposing her, but I'd only miss on a 1 and he'd be forced to make a +4 morale save. I did hit, but he made the resulting morale save. At the end of the round, he opted to jump all his shadowdancers into positions around the beholder who was not nearly well guarded enough after my gamble. Thankfully, he rolled very low and two of the attacks missed. In the third round, I finally dispatched the tombseeker but since he did not get tile points in one round, we were still tied 30-30 + kills. My beholder survived a round of attacks from the shadowdancers thanks to more low rolls, but he made all of his saves including a disintegrate, inflict, flesh to stone and a couple telekinesis. Thankfully, it took him quite a while to get rid of the beholder and I managed to get a breath weapon off dispatching the WEW and delver sgt. When battle was finally joined between Vol and the wounded shadowdancers, her swift oppressive will caused two of them to miss turns and two rounds of attacks took out Storm. At this point, the score was very tight and he could earn an additional 13 by killing a skeleton and running to a victory area. Even though I wouldn't get tile points this round, that would leave me ahead 186-173 with a 20 hp shadowdancer adjacent to Lady Vol who had already used his defensive roll. We didn't end up playing the last round since time was called, but even losing initiative he could not have done enough damage before I went over 200.

My second game of the night was against Nephelim and his Hierophant lead band (though sans-tiger). He won his map but things started off poorly when I was able to get a first turn eye ray off on his girallon. I rolled a 19 and he failed the save - killing him before he even got out of the gates. Later in the first round, I also managed to get an eye ray against his owlbear. I got fear and he failed the OOC morale save routing to the exit, but not off the map. After this, it was pretty much all downhill. His Blessed Hunter made it up to combat but after basing him with Lady Vol, an oppressive will made him skip his next turn and Lady Vol's next two attacks finished him off. The rest was mostly mopping up. At some point, the Hierophant was also morale checked routed. After a failed rally attempt, he was off the board and that put me over 200.

I got paired down in the last round and faced Senajeibot with an interesting array of CE beaters including a couple dragons. He won his map but I won side and opted to start from the outpost side of Drow Outpost. I won first turn initiative as well and moved my skirmisher and rat away from my start area so that they couldn't both be coned at the same time. Since this was bounty, it was important to keep them alive as long as possible. He opted to jump in with the shadowdragon anyway and cone my two titans. I made both saves and retaliated with an attack from Vol and an eye ray from the beholder (inflict). Eventually, I got the second eye ray off and rolled for fear. He failed the roll and ran away, giving Vol and AOO dropping him to 25hp. In the next round, the Large White made a run at my titans and they again both made the save. A crit from Vol caused an OOC morale check but with the wardrummer, he passed anyway. At this point, the Eye ran through my fodder (getting hit a lot) to base the Beholder. I managed to get a lot of shots in with Warrior Skeletons who never seemed miss dropping the eye quickly. He eventually passed his morale save and took out the Beholder after two rounds. This left the eye crippled and the Large White dispached by Lady Vol. I finished off the Eye with a warrior skeleton and ran lady Vol to the central victory area, blocking the way with the fodder I had left. After killing his Timber Wolf there, I was at 199 points with the Chuul still virtually untouched. Unfortunately, he could not get close enough for an attack - and even if he could, Lady Vol still had 90 hp so I went over 200 making the final score 209-159.

Due to being paired down in the last round, I only get second place and Grubbis claims first. I'm not sure I would have liked to face his band anyway. It certainly would have been an interesting match. I'm impressed with how strong Lady Vol is when paired with the Beholder despite the fact that I didn't once use him to heal her. The threat of being able to heal her caused everyone to go after the Beholder first if they were able to. Of course, that lead to taking serious casualties before having to face a relatively un-wounded Lady Vol herself towards the end of the match.

Nice report. So how do you think your band will fare against the top bands. Do you think it is serioulsly competitive? I have both L.V. and Beholder so im gonna have to test it out soon.

I honestly had a lower opinion of the band before I played than I do now.  Since I was playing it on a whim, I don't think I piloted it very well.  Also - our regular group isn't as serious about the game as others may be.  We often see rather rogue bands with a focus on heavy melee damage.  Regardless - I was very impressed with Lady Vol and the Beholder.  My biggest worry would be against multi-dragons (especially two shadow) with a wardrummer.  The +4 would really hinder this band's output potential since there is so much depending on saves.  I find that many people still have a hard time using the Shadow Dragon well around here - they often jump to get a good cone off but IMO you would be much better off jumping into a flank and taking a full attack against a lynchpin of the opponent's warband.  A decent Hierophant/Dire Tiger band might have some trouble with LV/Beholder on some maps but the championship maps are going to make it much easier for them to get to the Beholder without exposing themselves to too many eye rays.  After that, the Beholder will drop pretty fast.

Of course - if you notice from my report, the beholder often took a beating and even died in two of my matches and yet I won anyway.  It would be rather foolish of the opponent to attack LV directly since she'd be healing back 40 hp a round from the beholder while she returned attacks that rarely miss.  As a result, opponents tend to need to over extend themselves to get to the Beholder.  You have to expect that and know how to exploit it when they do.  If you play it right, much of the opponent's resources will be expended and Lady Vol should still be relatively unharmed.  I don't think she was in any real danger in any of my three games.
