For some reason we only had 4 people show up for our Thursday tournament, even though it was the first chance to use Night Below figures in a constructed environment. Perhaps people were minied out after the prerelease and release tournaments last week, or perhaps they were just busy.

Cursed Spirit

Hunting Hyena

Hyena

Field of Ruin

Shadowlord XT (2-1)

Hobgoblin Marshall

Cadaver Collector

Bone Naga

Greenspawn Sneak

Goblin Skirmisher

Hobgoblin Warrior

Warrior Skeleton

Hailstorm Tower

Paula (1-2)

High Inquisitor

Elf Dragonkith

Shadowbane Inquisitor

Dragonmarked Heir of Deneith

Cormyrean Warwizard

Deep Legionnaire

Mithril Mines

Garrett (0-3)

Tiefling Captain

Bugbear Champion of Erythnul

My first match was against Tyler (Shadowlord XT). He won map init, and we played on Hailstorm Tower, which is fine by me. Beats Thieves Quarter, oh how I hate that map. I won set up init I think, and deferred to him. I wanted to see where the naga went so that I could stick the black dragon behind walls and use the shadow dragons hide to provide them from inconvenient empowered magic missiles (EMMs). He set up the collecter and the marshall in the upper area of start area B, with the naga in the lower area. The fodder was spread around, it doesn't really matter. His sneak scouted out the magic circle victory area. I set up my two large shadow dragons in the lower of my two start areas, with everything else up top. Round one we moved out, with him motivating his Cadaver Collector (CC). My cursed spirit flew through the walls to the smaller shared victory area and my hunting hyena hid behind it. The wardrummer did his save +4 drumbeat, since most of his bigger guys were fearless. His bone naga moved along the short side of the map, to hide behind the walls. not that walls would save him from my dragons. Round two I waited him out with activations, although I had a tempting target to move in with two dragons and pin down the naga. But I chose not to, I think the cadaver collector would've gotten a couple swings, and I'd have been ooc. His skeleton attacked my spirit, but missed, and my spirit killed it in return. His cadaver collector put 30 damage on one my of shadows, and once he was outta activations I jumped the wounded dragon into position to breath on the marshall and collector. Marshall made its save, but the CC failed. I then flew the shadow dragon to the sacred circle area. I realized that the marshall needed to die otherwise I was gonna end up with a motivated CC full attacking me next round, and I didn't like that. So the other dragon jumped in to attack the marshall, hitting the first attack. Marshall made it's save but was killed with the second attack. His bone naga had moved towards the difficult terrain near the narrow opening in the tower at the top of the map, and my black dragon was able to move in and attack, which hit for 20. I won init next round, moved the uninjured shadow to flank the naga with the black and hit for 15. Then I attacked with the black, and of course missed all three swings. He retaliated by smacking the wounded shadow dragon with the CC for 30 forcing morale. I had +17 to the roll, and of course rolled a 2. Didn't have LoS to my black, so no enforcer. Fortunately I didn't rout off the board. He then took aoo's from the dragons with the naga and both attacks hit, finishing it off. At that point I rallied the routing dragon, and proceeded to finish off the cadaver collector in the next couple of rounds. I ended up only losing a hyena.

Round 2 vs Paula

I won map and side init, and deferred to her. She set up her figures in the lower area of start area B, close to the cannonballs. With most of her warband being speed 4, I figured I'd have some very nice opportunities to breathe on clumps of figures. I spread my stuff out between my two start areas. Round 1 we moved out, she made her high inquisitor immune to acid, and slowly moved up. I ended up giving her the black and a shadow dragon to drop the order's wrath on, figuring I'd make the saves with a +13 and +14. Of course the shadow dragon rolled a 2 and took the full 20 damage, but oh well. I won init round two, and she couldn't do much with her slow band. I eventually moved up the black to breathe on a gnome and the warwizard and the Dragonmarked Heir of Deneith (DMHD). The gnome and DMHD failed, but the warwizard made its save. She then charged the black with the shadowbane inquisitor, and hit for 20 with a smite, but that got the inquisitor away from the rest of her warband, so no rerolling a save for now. The shadow dragons jumped in and breathed, although she made most of her saves. The CWW made both bw saves and its morale save, the DMHD failed a save and died, and the high inquisitor made both of its saves. She then won init, and tried to take out the black, but missed on the dragonkith's attack and the shadowbane's second attack, I made the morale save. I then used a hyena and shadow jumped into flanking position and managed to hit all three attacks on the high inquisitor to kill him. The warwizard attacked my shadow dragon and hit, but then the shadow dragon ate the warwizard. Next round I intimidated the dragonkith into a failed morale save, and then mopped up the shadowbane inquisitor.

Round 3 vs Garrett

I won map init and side init and deferred to Garrett, he set up on side B, just like Paula last match. Garrett didn't try particularly hard. He jumped in with the dragon, breathed on my black, one shadow, and wardrummer. Dragons made their saves, wardrummer didn't. My shadow dragon then jumped against the edge of the map, and whacked his. My large black then finished it off. Round two I jumped his banebreak and routed it, and after it rallied I finished it with a breathweapon. Another couple rounds and that was game. He ended up routing my hunting hyena off the board with a lesser frighten from the bugbear champion of erythnul, although the hyena got its licks in before that. It hit on the aoo from the banebreak's trample, then made the trample save, then made the resulting morale save. Woot for awesome hunting hyenas.

Nice report Richard II.  Thanks.Â

The more and more I read and see, the Large Shadow Dragons are a real pain and holding there own in the meta.Â

Put me in both categories for the non attendance, family stuff along with a little burnout.

They're pretty decent. While a lot of the focus seems to be on jumping and breathing, it seems like the really nasty trick involves jumping into a flanking position and getting off all three of your attacks. Don't get me wrong, jumping and breathing is good too, especially if there's some squishy piece you'd like to take out (aramil, I'm looking at you), but with just a dc 15 on the breath, a lot of stuff is going to be making their saving throws.

Also, one thing I found moderately inconvenient, is that the shadow dragons aren't immune to their own breath weapons. That got to be moderately inconvenient a couple of times, although it wasn't too big a deal.

In the end, I'm not sure I'd take this band to a large tournament. I think the days of running a lone tiefling captain, or any other less than beefy commander, are in the past. You're gonna see a lot of Rylds, Storms, and Ultraloths methinks. Not that that's really news to anyone.
