| I went 3 and 1 losing only to Damien the Bloodfeaster in the final round (he finally has beaten me!)who took 1st place... the computer at rainy day hates me though so I took 3rd (I'm seriously writing a letter to dci about thier tie breaker program!).
I ran: Flame Archon Astral Stalker WW Champ Cliffwalk Archer Snake Tongue Cultist Animated statue Flame Snake x2
8 acts, cmd 2, Broken Demongate...
I didn't play a few farmers, tiefling cleric, tiefling rogue, drowblademaster, warhorse, Dryad, one of the swarms.
I was very tempted to play both the tiefling cleric or blademaster but decided with my range and poor command I needed activations. Animated statue was nice for tile pts and was a very hard to take down 30 fearless hp and highish ac. I really wanted the second cmd too but once again decided activations was key. Flame snakes offered more range and possible poison to make the stalker go off harder (it never worked out in case you wondered). Of the two commander options I decided on the snake tongue simply for the snakes swiftness with combo love from the beaters (used it twice on the cliffwalk actually).
First round: Steve angel of vengence umber hulk Shadar Kai Assassin cliff walk archer blademaster
played on Frostfell Rift
Basically I was able to double move twice and take down his blademaster through a combo of snakes and fire archon. The angle of vengence landed in the middle of my warband and used its word of truth and hit my commander and 3 beaters. Most saved except my commander. The WW champ finished off the shadar Kai but was dmg'd in the process. The next round a combo of hitts from the WW champ, Stalker, and fireburst took down the angel. After that it was blocking with snakes and statue from the cliffwalker while the archon and stalker took down the Umber Hulk.
Second Round: Kevin Manticore sniper Cyclops Maul Fighter Thundertusk Spined devil Snake Tongue Milita archer
played on Frostfell again
Second round saw me winning init with his cyclops based by the WWchamp and archon, it went down like a ton of bricks. Maulfighter and thundertusk failed against the snakes and my astral stalker. Cliffwalk stayed in the back and pounded away. He missed one ranged att in 8 or so rounds. My snake tongue hid in the way way back since he mounted up his snake tongue on the manitcore for perfect targeting. Round 3 saw the astral stalker and cliffwalker pounding away at dwarf and mount and the WW champ charging for the hit on the dwarf for the kill. Manticore killed off own pig with spike volley for the deathstrike after it activated which killed the WW champ. The following rounds saw both my archon and stalker route due to ranged fire from spined devil, manitcore, and archer after taking pig and dwarf dmg. The stalker came back but the archon failed to rally. My cliffwalk returned the favor routing the manticore after a SS from the snaketogue, who was still huddled in the back corner. He was one short of leaving the battlefield. He rallied and commenced return fire. As I was completly up on tile pts he had to come to center where my cliffwalk continued to provide 20 dmg each round. My stalker caught the spined devil and put me up on points. My stalker was down to 15hp however. Closer than I would have liked.
Thrid round: Taylor Bruenor Lg fire elemental G Cube Tiefling cleric Dryad Militia archer 1/2ling rogue
We both brought Demongate...
Having all smalls I set up on the forward possition of the inside side of the map. I got some early shots off on the G.Cube and tiefling cleric. A big melee occured in the middle (where it always does). It was a giant melee mass that ended up with the WW champ and Lg fire going down about the same time. The astral stalker got sneak att in vs. bruenor and with the help of the archon who att'd, routed, came back to att some more he went down. The cliffwalk again sat back and plunked away, scoring a ton of hits on G. cube, tiefling, and bruenor early. My stalker was down to 40 hp before killing bruenor, but archon went down. He conceded as the cliffwalk kept raining down ranged even though he still had militia archer, tiefling. I would have won on tile pts in another round or two anyway.
fourth round: Daimen the Bloodfeaster (Gregg) Bruenor CC Dragon Eternal blade 2x merchant guard flame snake Demonweb swarm
played on Hailstorm Keep
Bruenor was at 30 and the dragon at 20 before he won on tile pts vs. cliffwalk and snake tongue. His eternal blade was near full though. If I had won init I could have killed at least one of the two and lived through the round. But I didn't. I was just outmatched and my WW champ didn't get to bloodrage and my clifwalk only hit about 2-3 times the whole match!
I'll give him the honor of posting about our match.Â

| Prerelease Report (copied from neighboring thread)
A total of about 10-12 people showed up--the smallest number I can remember for a prerelease tournament.  Here's what I pulled: Rares Bruenor Battlehammer Capricious Copper Dragon  Uncommons Eternal Blade Drow Spider Priestess Sahuagin Shrieking Harpy Cliffwalk Archer Human Cleric of Bahamut  Commons Black Woods Dryad Blood of Vol Fanatic Demonweb Swarm Flame Snake Merchant Guard (x2) Militia Archer (x2)
Construction I was pretty delighted by my rares--two solid hitters with 100 hp and AC 21 each. In addition, the dragon has one of the only area damaging effects in the game, and I think the only line 12 effect. Both were auto-includes. The Eternal Blade was also a shoe-in, with her Improved Initiative and generally good stats all around. Because Bruenor is also a very solid commander, I could afford to use her a bit more aggressively, especially to take out weaker units once my dragon occupied a victory area.
With those three picked, I had 35 points remaining. I still had plenty of good units, but I wanted to boost my activations, so the two Merchant Guards (two bodyguards!) and the Flame Snake went in, leaving me with 11 points--just enough for the Demonweb Swarm, and 7 activations, at 199 points.
For map, I went with Hailstorm Tower, figuring that the central victory areas would force a confrontation in those areas, which would favor my band due to the Copper Dragon's Hoardmaster ability. My band had little in the way of ranged attacks, but while there are some good lines of sight on the map, most units can gain cover, giving my two main hitters an AC of 25 if I led with them.
We played a total of four rounds.
Round One (vs. Kevin) My opponent was running the Dwarf Maulfighter, Thundertusk mount, Manticore, Snaketongue Cultist, a Militia Archer (his only commander), and I forget what else. I got map initiative, so we played on my map. Right off the bat he was at a disadvantage because he did not realize he could be mounted during setup. Then in round 2 I was able to double move the Eternal Blade to the Thundertusk, taking it as her Eternal Training Enemy; I hit it for 25 damage, it failed morale and routed off the board. The battle continued in this vein, leading to an early victory. 1-0
Round Two (vs. Shane) This was the first (and only) time I faced an opponent with an Eternal Blade, amazingly enough. He had a Dwarf Maulfighter on a Thundertusk, but also had an Abyssal Stalker and some other units which I cannot remember (I think he may have had a Cyclops--I remember playing against one in round one or two). Again I won map initiative, and we played on Hailstorm Tower. We ended up fighting outside the area with the magic circle; it quickly devolved into a mashup with all our beaters piled together. I sacrificed both my bodyguards, and with superior hit points was able to outlast his hitters, taking them down one by one. 2-0
Round Three (vs. Bret) This was the first fight and only fight in which I lost map initiative, and so we ended up playing on Hellspike. I was actually happy with this choice, as I had little in the way of ranged threats, and enough hitters that the open space did not particularly bother me. What was more concerning was that my opponent had the Rage Drake, Sword Spider, two Drow Blademasters as commanders, along with a Shadow Mastiff, Farmer, Mummy, and a Fire Snake--eight activations! Fortunately, in the first round he moved his pieces up in a way that allowed me to position my dragon for his acid line breath weapon at the start of the second round, which took out the snake and farmer, and weakened the rest (he failed all but one save vs. the Breath Weapon). I then moved it over to the one space wide victory area against the crooked wall, where he remained for most of the game to grant me the Hoardmaster points. The other mistake my opponent made (which he considered his biggest error) was sending his Rage Drake out and around to presumably go after the back ranks of my warband, rather than simply making a beeline for my dragon and taking it out.
I ended up getting 40 points from Hoardmaster, and about 50 more from squatting on the victory area; the spider routed after one hit from the dragon, and was near enough to its exit to make it off the board immediately. My opponent did crit me three times (!), and severely weakened my three primary hitters, but ultimately I took out everything my opponent had except the Rage Drake (which was still at full health at the end of the game), and won on points. 3-0
Round Four (vs. Kyle, aka Lord_Rock on the boards) I was feeling nervous anticipation at this point; I had never done so well in a prerelease tournament before, and Lord_Rock is one of the best players in our local region. He was running a Cliffwalk Archer, Abyssal Stalker, two Flame Snakes, a Snaketongue Cultist, a Fire Archon, a Werewolf Champion, and an Animated Statue--in other words, some pretty decent ranged support. Fortunately for me, it was also a band wth a Commander 2, so I was assured of making most initiative checks and had a real advantage when it came to morale saves. And again, I won map initiative, so we played on my map.
We moved up in round one, me able to get my dragon into the magic circle on a double move for early victory points, and otherwise using the walls to maintain total cover against his band. He moved his Fire Archon, Werewolf, and Abyssal Stalker up just outside of the central building, where I could have moved and got all three with a breath weapon. Not taking the bait (which would not have killed any of them but would have got the Werewolf set up to rush me and hit my dragon for lots of damage), I moved back close to the shared victory area near the map side, and got two of his units (the Cliffwall Archer and one other--a Flame Snake I think) with the breath weapon. Flame snake died, and the Archer saved and took 10 damage.
He moved his units in, and was able to take out my Fire Snake and both Merchant Guards with a pair of swift firebursts, leaving me at that point with only three activations. However, it also put his hitters in close contact with my hitters, and at that point the battle shifted in my favor, as I was able to rout or kill both the Archon and the Werewolf without too much difficulty. I had also repositioned my dragon on the side victory area, to gain Hoard points for my kills and prevent it from being flanked by the Abyssal Stalker.
After that, he did not have enough beef to take out my three hitters, though he did bloody them up pretty badly, and I went on to victory--the first time I had ever come in first at a prerelease! 4-0
In summary, I have to say I had some excellent pulls, with three very solid hitters, two of them also excellent commanders, and good support in the form of the Merchant Guards (who twice sacrificed themselves in round 3 to the Rage Drake to prevent a rend on Bruenor). My thanks and appreciation to my opponents, who played very challenging games against me!
Coda: Got pretty good pulls in the five boosters as prize for first place, with the rares being: Blade Spider, Nightmare, Yuan-Ti Champion of Zehir, another Capricious Copper Dragon, and Umber Hulk Delver.

| I laughed outl oud when the archon fell out of my first booster!
Basically I knew I would have to pull off something amazing to win that last one... I did bait the hell out of your dragon twice and lucky for you, you chose not to take it. I also entertained thoughts of playing the ranged game with you for awhile but decided a protracted battle favored you with your high init and bodyguards... when I had that opportunity I took it but didn't end up panning out for me. In a melee battle I needed to win one major init and I don't think I won a single init that game. My cliffwalk archers inability to provide me with ranged support hurt too... I think he only hit one of your hitters twice... the astral stalker also didn't perform well. Excellent match all in all...
It was sad to see only 10 show up... we've always had 15-21... I hope this trend does not continue into 2.0... | | Rock Bottom Pricing: Arcane Archer 30, Centaur Hero 67, Human Cleric of Bane 25, Gold Champion 34, Death Knight 52, Goblin Blackblade 9, Silentwolf Goblin 7, Orc Raider 10, Dwarf axefighter 9, Healer 9, Thaskor 65, Aspect of Demogorgon 71, Ogre 9, Fire Giant 79, Human Wanderer 7, Drunken Master 18, Barghest 12, Longstider Barbarian 27, Longtooth Barbarian 22, Frost Giant 76, Ravenous Vampire 42, Large Earth Elemental: priceless

| You did win initiative at least one round--the round of your second swift fireburst. Had I won initiative that round I would have tried pounding the Archon into pudding or forcing it to rout before it could get that off; instead, you got initiative and fried my guards, reducing me to 3 activations.
Still, I was glad you used them both to take out my Merchant Guards, and not to weaken my dragon and Bruenor!

| | Initiative is often such a big (inordinately big) part of winning a game. I'm glad they're looking at ways of fixing that for DDM 2.0. | | Over 270 successful online DDM trades. | |

| I did I did win that one...
I was going to have to eat through the bodyguard hp at some point so I figured I might as well get them out of the way in swift actions rather than swings...
Init variables are huge... improved init broke the mold for CE then and would continue in CG with the eternal blade... just too good... i do think some of the upcoming champions should have init boost abilities (but not every round) so that when that one big init happens you can use it but its not a garuntee (+2 rather than 4 which often doubles your own init and makes yours at least 2x your opponents)... | | Rock Bottom Pricing: Arcane Archer 30, Centaur Hero 67, Human Cleric of Bane 25, Gold Champion 34, Death Knight 52, Goblin Blackblade 9, Silentwolf Goblin 7, Orc Raider 10, Dwarf axefighter 9, Healer 9, Thaskor 65, Aspect of Demogorgon 71, Ogre 9, Fire Giant 79, Human Wanderer 7, Drunken Master 18, Barghest 12, Longstider Barbarian 27, Longtooth Barbarian 22, Frost Giant 76, Ravenous Vampire 42, Large Earth Elemental: priceless

| It didn't help that in this set there was the Eternal Blade (init 8), a couple rare commanders with decent ratings (Bruenor, Merc. General), the mediocre drow priestess (commander 4), and some commander 2s. In three of the four matches I played, my opponents were running one or two commander 2s as their only commanders. Having +6 to initiative each round was a big help.
Point for point, the Eternal Blade is the best mini in the set for sealed. Even without the dragon and Bruenor, if I had some of the many other uncommon hitters with her, I would have had a pretty decent chance of going far in the tournament (at least until I faced opponents with warbands like the one I played here in Portland, anyway!).
