It's always fun when a new set comes out - not just because we have new pieces to use, but we often get a much bigger turnout at our events. Despite one player cancelling at the last minute, and another showing up a half-hour late, we still managed 9. After some mixed results in the past weeks with a rage drake band then an angel of vengeance band, I had put together a drow theme band that looked pretty solid. Just before we started, a friend asked to borrow my Dragondown Grotto map since he had also brought a ranged band. I gave him the map and went with my alternate warband listed below. I had expected the band to be strong - but it suprised me just how strong it really was. Here's what happened:

The bands:

Temysry (3-0, 56%)

Tiefling Captain
Capricious Copper Dragon
Large Shadow Dragon x2
Orc Wardrummer
Orc Warrior x2

Map: Dungeon of Blood

ZakX (2-1, 67%)

Fire Archon x2
Large Fire Elemental
Gnome Trickster
Merchant Guard x3

Map: Magma Keep

Nephelim (2-1, 67%)

Storm Silverhand

Shadowdancer x2
Graycloak Ranger
Mialee, Elf Wizard
Timber Wolf (minion)
Elf Warrior x2

Map: Dungeon of Blood

Knoll (2-1, 44%)

Drow Spider Priestess
Drow Blademaster x2
Drider x2
Drow Arcane Guard x2
Cursed Spirit

Map: Broken Demongate

Caldorna (2-1, 33%)

Warpriest of Vandria
Nemtyar Hunter
Cliffwalk Archer
Storm Archer
Elf Conjurer
Mialee, Elf Wizard
Timber Wolf

Map: Dragondown Grotto

Bonelock (1-2, 83%)

Werewolf Lord
Cliffwalk Archer x2
Yuan-ti Malison
Cursed Spirit
Orc Wardrummer
Bat Familiar
Timber Wolf

Map: Dragondown Grotto

Orcdoubleax (1-2, 67%)

Snig the Axe
Osyluth x2
Spined Devil x2
Krenshar x2
Goblin Skirmishers x3 (minions)

Map: Broken Demongate

Tomkat (1-2, 56%)

Half-orc Fighter
Mind Flayer Lich x2
Spined Devil
Flame Snake x2
Boneshard Skeleton
Kobold Miner

Map: King's Road

Rar (1-2, 56%)

The first match up of the night was against Bonelock (much to his chagrin). I won my map, but lost side and set up on the split side. I won the first round initiative and forced him to play first. He spread out his pieces but couldn't take any ranged shots since he had no LOS to my units which were either completely obscured or hiding. At the end of the round, I double-moved a dragon to base one of his Cliffwalk archers then shadowjumped the other into the flank and took a full attack, dropping the archer. In the following round, he ran his WWL to his central victory area and started to beat on my CCD who was also there after the first round. My dragons jumped in and after a number of full attacks (magic damage thanks to the sacred circle) the WWL dropped as well. My dragons took a couple shots from his archers and eventually forced a morale save which I passed despite his intimidating drumbeat. Eventually, my Tiefling dropped to his rogue and cursed spirit, but not before I could kill the Yuan-ti and base his cliffwalk archer. There was no way to do enough damage quickly enough with what he had left and I quickly went over 200.

The second match up was against Zak X. I won map but lost side again, and started in much the same was as I did in the first round. This time, however, I lost first round initiative and he had the opportunity to make everyone invisible. I advanced rather slowly, moving my CCD to a victory area in the first round. I used my last activation in the round to shadow jump adjacent to his commander and take a full attack. Due to his invisibility, only 1 attack hit, but it was 20 damage since this was caves of pain. I won initiative in the second round and started by double-moving one of my orc warriors into a position near his merchant guards and the gnome trickster. I then shadow-jumped in and used my own orc as the target to cone 4 of his pieces. Two guards failed the save and were killed (for 18 points each). The other guard passed the save, but then routed. The Gnome failed the save and routed off the board. At this point, he used his Fire Archon and Large Fire Elemental to wipe out my commander who was relatively unprotected. His other fire archon started beating on my Copper Dragon and used his swift fire burst to put some damage into both the copper and a shadow dragon. I used my other dragon to take another full attack against his commander, and with another successful attack, he dropped taking the Large Fire Elemental with him. In the third round, I was able to swarm one of his archons and take it down quickly which basically sealed the game.

The final match of the night was against the only other undefeated player - Nephelim - who was also playing a CCD band on Dungeon of Blood. He won side and I again started from the split side. This match was going to be quick one way or another since we were now playing bounty. Couple that with the CCD and each kill would net you an additional +20 VP. In the first round, I was able to jump both Shadow Dragons in after the CCD was in place and wipe out his Graycloak, Timber Wolf, both Archers and Mialee for a total of 134 VP. I took a silver fire line through a shadow dragon and the copper dragon, but at the beginning of the second round, I was able to drop a shadow dancer for 48 points and collect a second round of tile points to put me at 202 without having to touch Storm or his dragon.

Next week's goal - build a band that can stand up to this one and still do well against the rest of the field...
