Greater Vancouver

12/02/2007 11:45 AM

These limited events are a lot of fun, so my goal going into today was to have just that fun. I knew my friends would be there and the camaraderie is the best part of the tournaments usually.

So we had 16 people come out and it was the first snow fall of the year causing lots of havoc with the roads.ÂI was pretty happy with the showing as our constructed qualifier had only 13 I believe.

So we pulled boosters, recorded the contents than turned them back in. Then the recorded boosters were re randomly distributed. My friend Greg was not to pleased as he drew an eternal blade, cap copper and angel of vengie.. Tough to give that back up.

Anyway back to our boosters we were now given, I put together this:
{Cyclops}

{Nightmare}

{Drow Spider Priestess}

{Dwarf Brawler}

{Yuan-ti Malison}

{Militia Archer}

{Farmer}

I selected Dungeon of Blood for my map.

Round one vs Joe Q(thenameless), his band had Oslyth, Manitcore Sniper, Farmer, Merchant Guard, I think Drow Blade master and some other things from DOD im sure, the memory isn’t helping here.ÂWe played on my map, I cant recall all the details from this match but I do recall the Cyclops getting a crit(in the magic circle and blood rock) on the Osyluth which gave me a big edge. 1-0

Round two vs Sean Jackson, his band had an Angel of Vengeance, Dwarf Brawler, Thundertusk boar, Flame Archon and fodder to match.ÂWe locked up and I failed 2 saves with my Dwarf mounted Nightmare combo on the Words of Truth. Yes stunned! Then everything failed MC checks and the rout was on, I think I lost about 200ish to 110ish. Sean played well and is a good player, my dice let me down a bit but such is happenstance when your playing a dicegame. 1-1

Round three vs Greg Blanchard, Greg’s a good friend of mine and we learned how to play this game together in the summer of 2006. Never like to have to play in the sanctioned events though.ÂGreg brought some pain to the table in the form of a Sahuagin Baron, Blade Spider, Drow Spider Priestess, Dwarf Maulfighter, Snaketongue Cultist, and Shadow Mastiff.ÂWe played on his map, Hellspike of which I was able to use very well for my stick and move Cyclops, the MR3 coupled with Blind-sight was very formidable on that with his speed 8, and I was able to keep his Bladespider from gettingÂa flank off, Greg also rolled horribly and this made it into a fairly easy win. 2-1

Round four vs Chuck Moody, Chucks an up and coming player on the local scene (of which I haven’t been able to play much lately) so it was cool to be playing him as I haven’t had a chance.ÂHe was running Bruenor Battlehammer, Cliffwalk Archer, Feral Troll, and I think a Large Fire Elemental, then fodderish stuff.ÂThis match came down to a bit of luck for me to defiantly seal the deal, my militia archer scored a crit with a shot on his feral troll before it could activate after basing my Nightmare w/ Dwarf. Then my Archer again scored a crit on Bruenor later on, Bruenor also failing his hard to kill instantly snuffed the elemental and the cmdr. We played a bit more from there but it was primarily over. Was a good match.ÂHe won map but chose to play on mine. 3-1

Round five vs Shane Elgaard, Well Shane is a top player on our VANDDM team, winner of the constructed qualifier in Lacy, WA earlier this year and pretty much our top DCI ranked player for most of the year, he was 4-0 going into this game and we knew if we both finished 4-1 we’d both be in, so he forfeit to me to ensure I made it (I may have well made it on a strong 3-2 but this was a guarantee, yes filthy colluders). We did play the match for fun though and I failed some rolls spectacularly and was also a bit out played, his band had awesome synergy, Drow Spider Priestess w/ Bladespider, and Drider. A having a Harpy didn’t help either.. 4-1 onto the draft!

Draft time! We did double dump as I think its more exciting and a bit faster, we blasted thru the draft pretty quickly.

The order of finishers was:

1st - Joel Barnabe (Kezghan)
2nd - Joe Quaizon (The Namelesss)
3rd - Shane Elgaard
4th - Daniel Thomson (NeonKnight, Myself)

All VanDDM teammates.

I dumped first and dropped a G cube and Umberhulk!! Damn id love to have both for the collection cant have enough but this is for serious so.. Eternal Blade hello I love you!

I was very happy with my draft had 2 situations where I really wanted a certain piece but had to wait to get it and didn’t think it would last, those were a Fire archon (I was second pick) and a Yuan-Ti Malison ( but my second!). So my top 4 band was I think the best band by far.

{Eternal Blade}

{Cliffwalk Archer}

{Yuan-ti Malison}

{Yuan-ti Malison}

{Snaketongue Cultist}

{Fire Archon}

{Farmer}

Map: Dragondown Grotto (duh!)

Semi Final vs Daniel Thompson aka the NeonKnight

He was running something with Trip Blood of Vol Fanatic’s, Dual Drow Blademasters and a Astral Stalker with fodder in the form of a Sahuagin.ÂI won map and that was pretty much it. I lost the farmer and I think that was it, he did press deep with 2 surviving Fanatics who crit my Eternal Blade and had her down 40 in a snap, thankfully the autosave for morale was used. That was about the only scare. On to the finals.

There was Joe Q aka thenameless waiting for me as always (Vancouver Constructed Qualifier, and the last pre release) so far my track record was 2-0 in these big matches. I lost map +8 vs +2 didn’t pan out so well there. So we fought on Keep of Fallen Kings. His band was rare crazed. Band was Umberhulk Delver, G-Cube, Wolf Champ, Large Fire Elemental, Drow Blademaster, Ravenous Ghoul, Tiefling Rogue, and Shadar-kai Assassin. Eitherway I won set up took the left side of the map and set up my archers to wipe out his g-cube upon winning int. Course that didn’t happen he won and I wiped out a Ghoul instead. Either way it was still too much ranged hiding behind rough terrain for his band to handle and it didn’t help that his Elemental failed MC when he came into base the archers, he did get his Wolf champ in there next but my fodder type and archers beat on it a bit my Cliffwalk was smoked by his champ though and ran for it. But the champ only ever really got the one swing off(that piece is terrible).ÂHis Umberhulk was trashing my confused Firearchon in his VA with the 5hp cube hanging in there too. When I rolled a 20 and got control of the Archon(at 10hp) burst killing the cube then moved in for a smack down on the Umberhulk, then my archers ploughed into the hulk and it failed mc, then next round on winning init, I slew the cmdr game set match. 3-0 in big games vs thenameless, starting to feel a bit guilty here. All in all a lot of fun had and I cant wait to take on the best at DNDXP next year! Thanks to Craving for a Game for hosting the event and getting us the best events and prize support. Thanks Buck!

The Fortress of Solitude

12/02/2007 12:06 PM
Just like the Desert of Desolation Prerelease, I wasn't sure if I could make it until almost the last minute.

As Joel has listed above, I had decent, if not spectacular pulls for the start of this limited event. When I drew Joel (Kezghan) as my first round opponent, I knew I was in for a tough first match - he's one of the top two players here in BC. He won. After that, I jokingly told him that we would meet again later in the day. Little did I know that I was foreshadowing the truth.

I recovered handsomely by winning my next three matches. A couple of the wins were just by the skin of my teeth - a few points won when time was called.

The final round of Swiss pitted me against another local legend in Shaun Webb (Darksteed). We've had some great matches the last few years. In the end, he had me beat, and when we were about to report his victory, Vancouver's team captain Daniel (NeonKnight) stepped in. He told us that the winner of this match would advance to the top 4. This is when Shaun pulled a very classy maneuver. He told me that even if he were to win a plane ticket to the Limited Championship, he wouldn't be able to attend. He asked if I would use the ticket if I won. I said yes, so he dropped to let me in. Thanks Shaun!

My first round of elimination had me matched up against the other half of the top 2 players in BC - the mighty Shane (Elgaardian War Wizard). I won my map, which basically gave me a winning advantage with my powerful melee presence. It was a beat down, but Shane's masterful play kept it close right to the end, with me winning by 11 points.

Joel already reported the details of his win against me in the final in his post above, so no need to repeat.

Congratulations again Joel! You deserved to win the day. Most people would be happy with 2nd place in a competitive field of 16, but I'd like to change this pattern of losing to you in the final of a big event (has happened three times in a row now)

Yep, a lot of very close matches during the event this day. The closest for me was a mtachup with another very gifted local player: Sean Jackson.  I won the match with a final score of 205-198. In the last few rounds I had only a very wounded Dwarf Mauler and a wounded Spined devil versus his Drow Enforcer, Fire Archon and Halfling Rogue. All of which were one hit from death. But for four rounds I could not hit any of them!

Finally, in the critical last round, I won Initiative, and ran up to his Drow, and with a might swing from the Mauler, I hit, but failed the conceal! GAHHHHH!!!!! Ok, Spiney, it was all up to him. Either I connect and kill the Archon or I miss and lose the match with a score of 208-168. I finally hit, add the 37 points for a dead archon and see.....A WIN! My nerves were SHOT after this match, and I really need the time to walk around a bit and calm down after this match.

A great day, and Kudo's to Buck (Game shop owner) and his store Craving for a Game for another wonderful event!

Tis was a great turn out for me that day. My warband consisting of...

-Buernor Battlehammer
-Astral Stalker
-Sphinx
-Yuan-Ti Malison
-Black Woods Dryad
-Militia Archer
-Boneshard Skeleton
-Farmer

199/8

Map: Dragondown Grotto

First match was against Kezghan's buddy Greg Blanchard. He won map which was of course HELLSPIKE. Aw shit! What a crappy map for me that one is. LOL. Well after set up I decided that the only way to win this one is for me to draw him out of the smoke. First and second rounds were rather slow and only the tile grabbing Shadow Mastiff went down to the pouncing Sphinx and the Farmer grabbing tiles. Third roud went off beautifully as the Boneshard Death bursts for a whapping 35 damage! Go Fodder! Hehe. Ahead in points now and making him go first forced him to come out of the smoke to continue. From there my archers peppered his figures well they got slammed by Bruenor and the Astral Stalker. On the other end of the broad Black Wood Dryad had his Snake Tongue Cultist pinned in the smoke well he beat the snot out of him. Only lost the Boneshard the entire match up. Win 1-0.

Next up was Charles Moody, like Kezghan said he's an up and comer in the VanDDM area. Lost Map yet again. THis time though it's teleport temple. Interesting haven't played on this map since GenCon of '06 against Tried. Been awhile I'd say. Win set up and take the good side. From there spread out and cover as many teleporters as I can. In the end of the first turn I got Eight Teleporters to myself. Heh. From here on it's a teleporting archer fest with very little Chuck could do to defend against. The major fighting taking place in his blast marked victory area. His Feral Troll, Flame Snake, and Cliffwalk Archer all failed morale and left the board. Well His Bruenor was surrounded and Killed by the Sphinx, Astral Stalker and My Bruenor. In the end I had only lost the Boneshard Skeleton (Yet again. Lol),  Yuan-Ti Malison, and a routing Sphinx. Win 2-0.

Daniel Thomas (Neon Knight) was to be my third opponent. And THIS time I actually won my map. YAY! Though this was bad for Neon. Even though he had decent ranged within his band it was enough. The hidden Stalker, Malison and Militia Archer rained havoc down upon his men. All while good old Bruenor sat around in the back trees Sipping tea comfortably and letting the others know there doing a great job. On the other side of my back fields Neon's dinosaur had made it all the way around. Though now was being held in place by the Black Woods Dryad (I love this guy) and the Boneshard yet again. THe Sphinx moved into a charging position and Riddled the Dinosaur which he failed the save too. Guess the dinosaur just wasn't educated enough. Heh. From there it all came apart for Neon as most of his men failed morale and left the board. Another low casualty match. Losing only the Farmer, and Boneshard. Win 3-0.

Fourth match the 3-0's butt heads for reighing position. The Elgaardian War Wizard (Shane Elgard) and myself. Win map again. This was just a slaughter feast on his part. The auto damage was rather difficult to contend with. That and my luck gave out on me this round. Elgaardian winning all the key initiatives, my lacking of hitting and failed MCs. Made for an easy win for him. Good good Elgard. Loss 3-1.

Now that Elgard proved to reigh king of this qualifier. I needed this win to get into the top 4. Though my opponent Joe Quiazon (thenameless) a long time friend, opponent, mentor and most of all brother to me was not just going to lay down without a solid beat down. So let the fun begin. Map initiative goes to me. And side as well. Beneath Manticore volley's, Drow Priestess spell, and the reight of return fire Thenameless's meaty beaters made there way up the rough terrain and towards my side of the board. All well the Dryad and Sphinx made there way around back from the opposite side/end. Eventually Bruenor and the Stalker engage in a brutal melee with a severely wounded Osyluth, Dual Fanatics. Well the Cursed Sphinx and Manticore were playing a little cat and mouse around the board. In the end though it came down to the last initiative inwhich two of my creatures survived and two of his died. Win 4-1.

Though knowing that Thenameless truely wanted to go to XP and that I would not be able to afford the trip even with the plane ticket. I conceeded to Thenameless to let him have his shot at the title.

Great day for VanDDM! Good job boys!

DS.

Only the mighty shall fall.

Congrats to Kezghan on the win! And to Joe, Shane, and Daniel for making the top 4!

I am the aforemention Greg Blanchard. I finished 2-3 for the day and I had the pleasure of being beaten by both Kez and Darksteed. Its always a fun match playing them no matter what the outcome. I will admit a cried a little after having to put the Eternal Blade, Cap Copper, and Angel of Vengence back in the box and hand them back.
