April 15th at Games of Berkeley isn't Tax Day, we're holding a Dungeons of Dread Limited (Sealed) event! $26 bucks (+ tax) for two boosters and some loot (traditionally one booster per two players!)! This is the perfect event for those of you (us) who got a below average pull at an earlier pre-release (everyone fear my Fen Hydra... seriously)!

We'd like to open boosters as early as 6:30, but we're happy to wait a bit for anyone who can't get there quite that early but who gives us a heads up that they want to participate.

One caveat: Maps will be restricted to those from the new starter set to help us get used to the new maps! You don't have to buy a starter set for this event, if you don't have one of the new maps I'm sure someone will be able to lend you one! See you April 15th!

The dice were with me and I went 2-0, coming in 2nd to Ben who was also 2-0 but whose opponents fared better than I.

I ended up playing:

Death Knight
Bulette
Chillborn
Gnoll Marauder x2
Iron Defender x2
Goblin Picador

I decided against the Runecarved Eidolon. I just felt that it had too few hp for its cost, and it's inability to attack until attacked or an ally is eliminated would neutralize it during critical early stages of the game. We're still learning the new rules, so our play tends to be slow at Games of Berkeley. So early impact counts. The Deathknight + Chillborn can be a very nice combo in sealed. Adding an extra 20 damage when the chllborn hits is nice.

My favorite moment was in my second game against Paul, who played something like:

Young Red Dragon
Ice Archon
Oni
Troglodyte Bonecrusher
Goblin Picador
Orc

I actually managed to finish off his Young Red Dragon with the harpoon attack from my goblin picador! +6 vs. defense has a non-trivial chance of hitting a lot of figures.

I managed to crit his Oni with the chillborn (on a 19 on bloodrock), and every attack against the Young Red Dragon hit, so the dice were definitely in my favor.

Finally... getting... to... report...

So, as Zac said, I went 2-0 and my first round opponent beat Zac's first round opponent. Anyways, I played:

Drow Wand Mage (my only good Champion)
Ice Archon
Oni
Trog Bonecrusher
Gnoll Marauder
Orc Raider

My second rare was a Skeletal Tomb Guardian, who I liked for his synergy with the Oni... but both of those rares are glass cannons, so I only ended up going with one of them (Oni) and bringing in the solid beater that is the Ice Archon. Besides, look at the fantastic synergy this band has with the Drow Wand Mages Champion powers - all of the minis besides the DWM are evil, the Ice Archon's attacks are cold, as is the Oni's Cold Cone spell! We had set all agreed to play on one of the three new maps from the starter and I chose the Flooded Ruins, er, the one with the river and the two teleporters. I was counting on my opponents to have not played with Teleporters for a long time, and it worked to an extent.

My first opponent played:

Immolith
Shade Knight
Chillborn
Vampire Spawn
Iron Defender
Kobold Archer
Goblin Picador

I won map and, still being unfamiliar with all the rules and maps I did something daring and potentially stupid: I set the Oni in Gaseous form and had him teleport to my opponent's side and sit on that teleporter, cutting him off from using it. My goal of course was that my opponent would swarm him, I could use the Wand Mage to blast a number of them, then next round I'd win initiative, cone a bunch of stuff, then teleport out of there! It kinda worked. My Oni did take a bit of damage, I did get a good blast off with the DWM and I did win the 2nd round initiative and cone a number of things before teleporting the Oni out of there - if only I'd hit the Immolith with any of it!!! I believe my opponent could also have dragged the Oni off the teleporter with the Immolith had he wanted to, but he didn't *whew*.

To wrap up, my basic strategy prevailed. My opponent didn't get anything across the river to attack my DWM and my forces were able to destroy enough of his forces to win on victory points (I was also the only one to score VP for that first round).

Round 2, My opponent plays:

Young Silver Dragon
Eye of Flame (you've got to be kidding me with this pull...)
Howling Hag x2 (aaarrrrgghh!!!)
Chillborn
Kobold Archer
Goblin Picador

I again won Map (thank goodness!), but this time I played more conservatively. I ran my Orc up to claim my teleporter to keep him from coming over. He ran one of his minis up to do the same. I managed to pop his Kobold early to keep it from shooting over the water. My opponent played conservatively, keeping his Eye of Flame a bit too far from the action to make it as useful as it should have been. he also held back at least one round too long before bringing the Young Silver to bear. At any rate, I wasn't paying attention as well as I should have and got one of his Howling Hags down to 5HP and the final round had already been called. But I was ahead on points and my minis had the majority of their HP... but wait! His Young Silver could fly within cone range of my Gnoll Marauder who only had 40 HP left and the Gnoll's defense is crap! Then I did the math, I had 34 points and he'd only killed my Trog, worth 18 points... plus 18 for the Gnoll - my opponent was about to beat my by 2 points!!! Why hadn't I moved the Gnoll after he killed the first Howling Hag?!? So up flies the dragon and breathes for 40 cold damage on my Gnoll with exactly 40 HP... and my opponent rolls a natural 1! Dice are such a large part of this Game!

So, luck carrying me past my own inattentiveness I win my second round to go 2-0. We pop open prize boosters to pick our wins and what happens to be the rare? An Eye of Flame... aah, sometimes the dice (even those of my opponent) like me!
