| Will you guys stop stroking Jesse's ego please? It is hard enough fitting him in the carpool as it is!
I jest......[:p]
Actually, his warband is pretty effective against some things, a bit vulnerable against others and if he doesn't win inish it can break even sometimes. Pretty much the same as every other tier 1 warband out there. The point of keeping the details secret is so the other people at the GA and FL qualifiers will not "tech" against it in case they view Jesse as the main top 4 threat. The fact that the four of us, Doubtofbuddha, lalato, neilasaurus and I, all know about this band and how it works is due to the fact that we all play each other at least once a week in preperation for the qualifiers we are attending. | | **overlong signature deleted. | I was just reading osme of this again and was thinking about some of the comments and concerns. It again comes down to the concept of players wanting to know what the best players are playing. Now I'm not one of the best players and most of my bands are being used by others anyway ( I can't take full ownership as I've never posted them as MY bands). I do have to say that even if your band was posted, it does not mean that someone else can play it like you. People look for what they think is the best and try and imitate it, so why not throw them a bone just to get them thinking and get them excited.
As for the complete secrecy concept... to each his own. If you are that nervous that someone will figure out your master plan then keep it secret, or Not so Secret (as the N and S stand for), that is up to you and the others. From my point of view I like to see what others are playing and how they faired. It helps me when I'm looking at my bands and thinking about how they will play. If the person who won the event is not listed, then I can still see the rest, so no big deal to me.
In the end, keep it secret or let it out... it is up to you, but please change that shirt. | | Sean Banks Champion of Elementals Official Organizer Gen Con 05 maxminis Event | Winterfantasy 06 maxminis Event | Gen Con 06 maxminis Event | Winterfantasy 07 Community Event

But seriously, while I'm curious what DoB played, but I'ld much rather drive down to FL and play him. And if I were really serious about qualifiers I get out and play against all the active groups in my area. But if I had to Gaze All Day at that shirt, I would surely go blind. I bet that shirt helped win many a tournament (due to causing blindness).

| I looked here to get an idea about what types of warbands are winning and what types are not. Not the specifics of one warband. But unlike others I don't think partial reports are better than none. Is a novel better without the last two chapters than to have not read it at all?

Actually, it's that second part that's more of the point, generally. Let's say a really solid player is going to the Georgia qualifier, and is going to either play 3 HH or Gith Monks. He can't quite decide. His biggest worry if he plays Gith Monks is that he thinks they lose to 4 Chraals (badly). On the internet he finds out that Jesse is coming to the tournament, and has been playing 4 Chraals in all of his recent tournaments. He decides to play 3 HH. Now instead of an easy win if they face each other, Jesse has a hard game, some consider it an unfavorable matchup, in fact.
The reason to keep a band secret is to get more favorable matchups than if everyone knows what you will play. Maybe no one will go so far as to bring an anti-Chraal band, just because they know or expect Jesse to bring that, but they're sure not likely to bring a band that they feel gets destroyed in the Chraal matchup. Plus, maybe one or two players WILL bring an anti-Chraal band.
So unless the warband has no good matchups, no bad matchups, all the matchups are exactly the same, it doesn't hurt for a high profile player to keep what he's playing a secret.
If it's really rogue, the surprise factor is also helpful. Even if the opponent doesn't change his band at all when he learns Jesse is playing Aspect of Demogorgon, he might test against that matchup, or even just mentally prepare for the matchup, and thus make fewer mistakes than otherwise.
Is any of this a big deal? Not really. In the 2004 championships when I used a rogue band the surprise factor barely mattered, if at all. But neither is it a big deal to NOT share the band with everyone on a public forum.

| So this is where all of the hubub is from......
While I personally think it a little bit (re: not a huge deal)tacky not to post a warband, it's no real biggie. Somewhat the same thing happened at Gen Con last year and Jesse didn't fare so well in the Championships, from what I heard, so it's not like he's got some major advantage that can't be overcome by good play on an opponant's part. Even in this tournament Sam smacked him around in a game. We win some, we lose some, same as always. Indeed, and I fully expect that I will lose a game or two when I play in my qualifier(s) this year. Hopefully I will have learned enough about piloting this type of warband that I can minimize that that chance, but it is a rare tournament where I don't lose a game (and occassionally two [:p].)
All warbands have bad match-ups, and my decision to not mention my warband is merely an attempt to keep a narrow competitive advantage that I may or may not have (as noted by Dagni.) For all I know I could end up getting beaten by a surprise tactic (like I was during the first round of the Championship last year) or by a very unfavorable match-up (like I was during the third round of the Championship last year.
Though this time I am avoiding playing a warband that has quite as bad of a match-up as 2 Couatls + 3 Justice archons vs. Cleric of Dol Arrah + Large Silver Dragon. I am also keeping my mouth shut a bit better. [:P]
Besides, who knows if I will keep this warband for the Qualifier. I've already had 3 or 4 warbands that I have considered for my Qualifiers, but each one has proven unsatisfactory in some respect. Its very possible that in a week or two, I will decide one particular match is insurmountable and move on to something else. | | I am not gone.
