So, if you were undefeated and dropped the final round, you could guaruntee winning the tournament?
Maybe, assuming no one else was also undefeated at that point, but depending on the size of the tourney you often end up with a couple of undefeated players facing off for 1st, but it is the other prizes / placements that might be in play.
Not sure, is there a difference between being 5 and 0 and being 5 and 1? Would someone without a loss place ahead of someone with a loss if they both had the same number of wins? Depends on how the system is set up. IF all it is looking at is A) Wins and then B) opponent win percentage, you might end up ahead.
There won't be a disparity in total games played (except for those dropping). It is total wins (or, more accurately, 3 points per win, 0 for losses or draws). Opponent win % is the tiebreaker. As I said above, you still won't be getting prize support (at least in tournaments I run). You dropped from the tournament. (There is a difference when you run Swiss + single-elim - you have made it to a certain spot and if you drop then, you don't lose your spot). I would have you lose your spot in a swiss-only tournament. | | [http://www.hordelings.com/frontend/profiles/profile.php?user_id=22]

| I only dropped once in all the tournies I have been in:
2005 SoCal GenCon sealed
FOUR CONSECUTIVE LOSSES
I only dropped because if I had kept playing, and lost again, I would have kicked the shit(or attempted to) out of everyone within melee reach in a berserker rage.
Dropping sucks but I see as a form of life-saving device, both for the person who dropped (saves himself from bursting a blood vessel) and possible opponents (who could be the unwitting victim of scathing wrath) Other than that, to each his own... so drop if you must, but I try to stick it out within reason.

You sound like a fun guy to party with.[:D]
I too like the "stick it out, until you're temporarily, but completely demoralized," principal. How long it takes one to get to this point, is probably a measure of one's self-control and self-imposed expectations, but if you're about to beam dice off people's skulls, it's probably a good time to check out for the day... | | Completed trades: arbados Completed 23 trades on Hordelings www.hordelings.com - http://www.hordelings.com/directory/profile.php?user_id=429

| Thanks Memphisto, yeah, I generally have a good time and take the "life's a party" approach. I find that not many DDMers are the partying type, and I often have to get drunk, puke, cause havoc, and spread anarchy all by my lonesome (well, with my thralls in tow, of course).
If you're gonna travel to Santa Clara, you can witness first hand! But I'm really harmless, and rule number 1 is to avoid "official" entanglements at all costs.
Since my graduation from Anger Management class.... I still doubt I could handle 4 straight losses..hehe

| you could always have done what I did and slam my die so hard it dented the table and went skittering off into the board games area.
im still trying to figure out why someone, with a heart far purer than mine, would go and get that die back? WHY would you think I would want it? seriously. WHY?? | | Minis... Serious Business Completed Trades (18 ) | Pending Trades (0) Ebay seller to Avoid –Fantasy_Quest_Dist

| LOL, that's hilarious ACK! Those F-ing Dice are more durable than you would think. After losing to Guy in Arizona, I went outside to perform a little die-destruction ritual, but alas, it was in vain! Even though I did manage to scare the $hi+ out of the people in the salon or whatever it was next door. Mid-ritual, the die ricocheted off the ground into thier window.

I actually have one of those solid brass huge dice. It really does dent the table just when you roll it. I can only imagine if I did something crazy like, oh I dunno, miss a FB like 3 times with a HH. Poor table.

| I think that if someone is losing and just wants to leave or needs to leave, it is one thing. I don't personally like it when someone is doing well and drops. I'm not going to sit on a fence and be supersensitive about this. It's just a general impression I have. I don't like the idea of doing well in a tournament and dropping in order to preserve DCI points. I think it's not good gamesmanship. I think it's much better to rise to the challenge of facing tough competition.
If someone's DCI rating has already been beat up in a tournament, and they're not in the running, I feel differently than if someone is doing well. 3-1 is doing well. 1-3 or 0-4 is not doing so well. Something like 2-2 is probably not doing so well, but is more borderline.
I don't expect the whole community to agree with me on this. It's just my opinion, which shouldn't carry a lot of weight on this issue anyway. | | "Look to God and live." Alma 37:47 Vindicated Champ of Hippogriff (Arcadian Hippogriff) and Uncommon Horse

| I'd rather see ppl stick it out as much as possible. But I also believe that there are times where dropping is just a good idea. If you have had that bad of a day, and its just painful to play more, I can definetely see saying screw it and just dropping. But it does suck to see/hear so many ppl dropping after 1-2 losses, or something along those lines.
I can see ppl wanting to protect their DCI rankings, but I guess I just figure if you are going to go to a tournament, you are there to compete in the whole thing, | | Champion of a Knight of Takhisis/Knight of Neraka
