| Great, so Saturday night it is! The day of the Grinder would be really bad.
I know that some people may have a problem with this date, so I'll adjust the lsit as needed. Hopefully I can now create the event in the Gen Con database, now that we have a date. | | Sean Banks Champion of Elementals Official Organizer Gen Con 05 maxminis Event | Winterfantasy 06 maxminis Event | Gen Con 06 maxminis Event | Winterfantasy 07 Community Event

Mike Donais has posted in another thread that his understanding is that this year the Grinder will be on Thursday, with the Championship on FRIDAY. I suspect that the top 8 will still be Saturday morning.
Dreamblade will run on Saturday, but Ian told me at WF that he thought Saturday night would be ok. 500 players? Hmmm I'm guessing that a dreamblade game must last 30 minutes if Ian was right.
In any event, I know that we'll have low turn out if we are tyring to play till midnight the day of the Grinder, and right before the Championship.
Sounds like Saturday night!

To handle 500 players would require 9 rounds in straight Swiss. Mike Donais indicated in another thread that he would allocate 50 minutes as a typical time for a game to take. Although a tournament of this size would be possible to do at a dedicated event like GenCon, they may decide to use "flights" as I've heard is done at some big MtG events. Basically, you would break the field up into smaller "mini tournaments", and then rejoin the top finishers from each mini tournament into the consolidated tournament.
So, if you had 4 tournaments of about 128, 3 rounds would leave you with 16 3-0 players in each flight. Join the ~64 undefeated players from the 4 flights, and now three more rounds gets you to 8 6-0 players. From here on out you could run single elim or whatever.
Of course, this is just an example. To MtG veterans, is my understanding of how flights works correct? Would it seem to be an appropriate technique to use in an event of this size?

| Pat, that would make sense. It would be 6 rounds to get to the top 8 players, and single ellimination after that. So the whole thing could be 9 rounds long using the flight method.
That sill would be 9 hours of play, so if they give a lunch and dinner half hour, that is 10 hours. Knowing they will start around 10:00 am means it should be completed by 8:pm if everything goes well and there are no problems. | | Sean Banks Champion of Elementals Official Organizer Gen Con 05 maxminis Event | Winterfantasy 06 maxminis Event | Gen Con 06 maxminis Event | Winterfantasy 07 Community Event

This makes a LOT of sense.
It would also mean just a handful of players would be "on the edge" of being able to play in the MaxMini's Event.
Ian told me at WF that he thought Saturday night at 8ish would be a good time. That certainly DOESN'T sounds like pure swiss with a cut to the top.
Thanks for the info Pat!

| | And that ties perfectly to what Ian said. It could be over right around 8:00. So even if we started early, we would only be missing a handful of people. | Mike Donais posted over on the WotC boards that someone made top 8 in DDM and top 8 in the Dreamblade tourney, that they would "make sure that they don't overlap".
I think this again strengthens our selected time slot...

Meaning that the tops 8 for both games will be on Sunday. Nice! Our event will not conflict with either of these. GenCon doesn't close, and rumor has it, WotC will be running their HQ 24 hours a day as well.
Running as a real event means that we will likely be given tables outside of the WotC zone, but still in the sagamore ball room.

Pat and I spent about 45 minutes on the phone trying to cut the wording of this event down to 450 characters... including spaces. Now we just have to wait and find out about approval. I've been offered a position with WoTC as part of the design/development team for their new Xendrik Expeditions campaign--which means it's increasingly likely that I'll be at Gencon (I may HAVE to be at Gencon!). Yip!
Of course, we also just found out that my wife is pregnant, so it'll depend on how she's holding up :)
If I'm at Gencon, it'll be on WoTC's ticket, so 99% of my time will be spent running and managing the campaign, but I'll make damned sure that the off time I get is the night of the draft.

Straight from Ian Richards. He posted it on the boards, let me go see if I can find the link.
As for AAM (or SWM for that matter) he didn't reaveal anything... Have you heard about a "nationals" for AAM? They didn't run anything like that for SWM last year...

Well now that I can put Winterfantasy behind me, I can look to the next big event which is Gencon. As this will be our 3rd annual event at Gencon I'm sure we will need plenty of time to get things rolling and make sure we get everything organized. Pat Ellis and I both spoke with Ian at Winterfantasy to make sure what ever day we plan our event on, it will not conflict with any WotC events. So here is what I have so far for everyone.
I submitted the event to Gen Con
DATE: Saturday Agust 12
TIME: 7:30-8:00 start time
PLACE: Minis Hall
FORMAT: We will be doing a draft with 200 point boosters which will include Archfiends, GoL, Deathknell, Angelfire, Underdark, Wardrums, and WotDQ.
OK, time for some newbie dumb questions.
7.30-8.00: Morning, or evening? How long do you expect it to run - i'm guessing about four hours?
Sets for the draft: Don't suppose Aberrations could be included in that list?
I'm interested in playing but need to know the morning/evening thing to check for clashes.

| 8 in the eveing.
We expect 4 rounds (about 45-50 minutes each), so about 4-4.5 hours total.
Because Aberrations is a 100 pt set, pod's that had to many Aberrations boosters would be MUCH weeker than the rest of the field (this is what we experienced last year with pods that had Dragoneye or Aberrations...).

Prizes: In the past we've seen parts of retail kits, random loose rares, sets of commons/uncommons (which for older sets is pretty valuable...), loose boosters, board games, D&D Nostalgia items (I grabbed the monster cards from ~1982 at Winter Fantasy!), chainmail figures (that are legal in DDM) etc.
The last 2 events, the items that went fastest were repainted, or custom figures. Peter Lee has donated Custom carved, cast, and painted Huge Earth Elementals. Some of Runelord's stuff has been featured as well.
