The Russians are very competitive- not as easy to play as the Sherman Swarm or Crocodile, but not as fragile as the German armor.

Key Units:

KV-1
Every Russian army should include at least one KV-1, preferably with a Cossack Captain on board. A KV-1 is virtually immune to infantry close assault, so this is the unit that you want to hold the objective with on turn 7. The KV is very tough, but don't put it in harm's way early- keep it around for the late game.

T-34/85
An excellent tank for the points.

JS-2
Go with a JS-2 in 150+ point games and especially when you expect an opponent to field a Tiger or King Tiger.

T-70
Not essential, but a good buy for the points, the T-70 is useful for hunting Humbers and Wehrmacht Snipers. Hold the T-70 back then use its speed to make a counterattack or to flank a disrupted tank.

Cossack Captain
Near broken when used with the KV-1. Substitute the Set 3 Russian Grenadier when your opponents get tired of the Cossack dominating their infantry.

Commissar
Essential if you are running infantry. Remember- the Commissar can 'encourage' the ZIS 57mm AT Gun.

The Russians biggest weakness is a lack of defense 5 infantry. At the competitive level the SS-Panzergrenadiers and Screaming Eagles Paratroopers are dominant. Take a Sniper if you expect to face Germans, and only play infantry if you want to be more historical.

In my group, we play two formats: friendly historical and competitive tournament. Tournament play is dominated by all-armor armies that mix nationalities. Friendly historical is more fun and features more diverse armies. Here are the army building rules:

Friendly Historical
No more than 70% vehicles or soldiers.
Lend-lease vehicles are allowed for UK and Russia: M4A1 Sherman, Stuart and Halftrack.
US may use Vickers MG (sub for Browning MG).
USSR may use Vickers MG (sub for Maxim MG), M2 Mortar and Cavalry.

100 Point Competitive
32 KV-1
33 T-34/85
21 M4A1 Sherman
09 Cossack Captain (on KV-1)
04 Cavalry (use against AT Guns and Wehrmacht Sniper)
99 points

You can also replace the Sherman with a T-70 and more Cavalry or a Sniper.

100 Point Historical
32 KV-1
33 T-34/85
05 Commissar
08 ZIS 57mm (or Sniper)
08 Vickers MG
04 Cavalry
06 Mosin-Nagant x2
03 PPSh-41 or Grenadier (on KV-1)
99 points

150 Point Competitive
32 KV-1
68 JS-2
33 T-34/85 (or Sherman & T-70)
08 Cavalry x2
09 Cossack Captain (on KV-1)
150 points

I'll add 1 more to Dr.C's list
Fanatical sniper should be an effective AA-unit is you have a Commissar adjascent. And is good against any current infantry except the SE-Paratrooper.
