I use the Folkart acrylic paint from Walmart, but that's just because it's cheap and my skill level probably couldn't take advantage of higher quality paint.

Vallejo for everything but metals (too grainy), Games Workshop metals. The new reaper paints are nice and I think work about as well as the Vallejo.

I like Vallejo paints. They have a dropper spot which allows you to easily drop small amounts onto your dipping surface and minimize any loss. It also keeps very fresh that way. Abundance of colors.

I have fallen in love with the new Reaper Master Series Paints. They have improved my painting a lot. I didn't even realise it until I went back to using my Reaper Pro Paints and I found it harder to control the paint on my brush. They come in dropper bottles, so they force you to use a pallette and thin your paints, but for best results you should be doing that anyway (and the MSP can actually be thinned effectively with water). Plus they come in "triads", 3 colors grouped so you have a shadow, normal color, and a highlight that goes together. Since I was not an art major, this helps me out quite a bit.

That said, I still like my Pro Paints, they are good range of colors and cover better than craft paints.

I still use some Apple Barrel craft paint for colors that I like that aren't available in the Reaper paints. They aren't my first choice, but you can't beat the price for the range of colors.

I really don't like Testor's products at all, beyond DullCote for sealing my paint jobs (I actually use a generic gloss coat first, then knock down the shine with the DullCote). Their brushes are crappy and the paint goes on sloppy. For a while I used a Testors green for my Orc skin, but I've since switched to Reaper Pro Paint Troll Flesh.

I use some GW paints for certain colors (mainly purple), but I've had too many bad experiences with their paints to try more.

I'm a big proponent of using quality tools (paints AND brushes). You never know how it effects your painting until you actually try the better tools. My painting improved leaps and bounds when I switched from Testors to Reaper (again, paints and brushes). Then when I switched to using a Windsor and Newton sable brush (a Gold series that I picked up for half off at Michaels) I noticed another jump in the quality of my paint jobs. I now use W&N Series 7 (a $10-15 brush) and my painting has improved again (I will also note that my W&N S7 brushes are still going strong, while the cheapo brushes that I was using usually only kept a good point for 5 or so minis - so you are not only paying for quality, you also are paying for durability).

That's not to say you have to go out and drop $50 on a set of W&N S7 and $200+ on Reaper MSPs (or even should), but as your skills improve don't be afraid to upgrade.

Anyone know prices of these?

I have ONLY seen Reaper Miniatures Paints not the HQ ones... Both the same display case both the same small squat round plastic bottles. Does anyone have a website maybe for the higher quality ones?

Also anyone know where I can find Vallejo? Havent seen them before. Most of the others Ive seen at michaels or my lgs. I will based on recommendations grab a few from each set and test them out(probably skin tones or something to see how smooth and thick they are)

If you were using the testors plastic brush your crazy!
Ive got so far just two brushs, one with a few bristles for eyeballs. The other is a few steps up for armor and shields. I will be gettin a body brush (larger for more area) and will have to check out michaels for it! How do you clean your brushs? Even my HQ brushes I got (not testors) using testors paints would go bad after 2 minis. (I dont jab it down to clean it, I know that ruins them)

The clearcoat I have is a lackluster finish (dull) and its got a big red beholder on the front. I got it at a gaming store. Anyone know what it is offhand? I cant remember its name but would like to compare.... Ive used it, I hate it. Its quality turned me off from coating any of my minis again. Maybe youve got a better companys clear coat to suggest?

I am in the process of upgrading :) All I have now is testor paints and I know I wont use them on plastic... ALOT of them. But yeah, they are getting a little old and some of those dang caps are just so hard to get off!

Thanks all for the input so far your saving me lots of moneys :)

Acrylic FolkArt is working perfect for repainting DDM, a huge pallete. Much better than any enammel I tried before and no need for thinner.

The only things is buy the tubes because the little sampler things dont close too well and the paint cakes and it goes to waste.

I agree with Sharn Inquisitor and Temperance. Love both GW and Vallejo. I have friends that are really diggin the reaper pro series. Just haven't had the time to go out and but a new set of paints.

IMHO, the Apple Barrel are great for doing lots of terrain and base coat work!! Allows you to save cash for items like brushes and figs. Besides allowing you to get some skill. I still use them. But this is just me...

I mostly have Deco Art Americana paints from sales at Michaels. For smooth metallics I have some old Partha paints. Fortunately not much has ever dried up beyond saving and I haven't ran out of many colors over time.

I've used Humbrol Enamels (the ones in the little metal cans) and they seem to do well. I like how the paint flows, more than the testors. Although I've not tried testors in a long time, they may have changed since my last use.

I'm going to pick up some GW paints to try them out.

When I started painting, I used folk art paints (cause that's what I had).
I got sick of wasting so much paint because the minimum amount I could sqeeze out of a tube was always about 10 times what I needed - so I invested in a complete set of Vallejo game colours (cause that's what my FLGS has). I love the bottles cause they let you get a drop at a time, and apart from reducing the wasted paint, it also makes it much easier to reproduce mixes.
I also found it much easier to get good results than I did with the folk art paints - I'm pretty sure I could get basically equal results with either, it's just a lot less painful with the good paint. [:)]
The link to my repaints is in my signature if you are interested - they are basically in chronological order, with the most recent first. The Giant Crested Felldrake/T-Rex is the last one I painted with the craft paints. Enjoy.

Straight from the source, http://www.reapermini.com/store/customer/home.php?cat=68

They only came out this year (the full line isn't even out yet), that's why you can't find them in a lot of places.

I've never bought from them, but I've heard good things about The War Store.

Actually, their Reaper MSP are cheaper too.

Try Testors DullCote (item #1260, if you need to special order it), I like how it works.

I actually use Plaid Clear Acrylic Sealer Matte (CS200306) that I picked up at WalMart on the cheap for my first coat or two (depending on how much use/abuse the mini may get). It's not very Matte IMO, so after that I use the DullCote to knock down the shine.

I know some people who use the Dull Cote as a sort of primer for their DDM repaints, since it doesn't cover up the paint that's already on the mini.

Delta Ceramcoat for most of my normal colors (with some Reaper thrown in here and there). I try to make my own blends most of the time.

Reaper and GW for my metallics.

Testors for my flat sealer.

I've been weaning myself off the GW paints in favor of the Vallejo and Reaper paints. I like the droppers for the Vallejo paints, I had transfered most of my old GW paints into drop bottles several years ago. The Reaper paints tend to be cheaper than either the GW or Vallejo and they seem to get the job done pretty well.

I'm pretty sure I used Testors enamel in the past for some of the first minis I did. They practially look like they were painted with nail polish.
