| I have been thinking about doing a couple of repaints. I have a couple of questions.
1. Do you prime these (DDM) like a normal metal fig?
2. Does the paint crack or chip more than metal/hard plastic due to bending?
3. If I start re-painting will I become obsessed? [)]

| 1. Do you prime these (DDM) like a normal metal fig? Some do, I do not. But you do get much better results priming, I just don't have that much time to invest in something I try to do for fun.
2. Does the paint crack or chip more than metal/hard plastic due to bending? Hasn't happened to me...yet and I have put them thru a vigorous test, but I do use a sealer.
3. If I start re-painting will I become obsessed? [)] Perhaps! I find it that time keeps me from doing this more regularly. | | Trades >> Completed: 49 | Bad: Ø | Pending: 0 | Trade & talk Live on IRC! SERVER: irc.psionics.net CHANNEL: #maxminis

| The cracking aspect has been my biggest fear to date. One of the main reasons that I love the DDM stuff. I don't have to worry about my hard work being chipped or such things.
Now I am probably going to be trading for more Commons....and making the phrase, "you see this." as I place a fig out on the board....

| Have posted these on the other thread by runelord. Anyone have advice on a good digital cam in the 100-150 range? Will probably be getting one in the next week or so, then retaking these pics and taking ones of all those I have done since. Thanks!

Funny enough I do get some peeling on DDM originals. it just happens; latest one is the archmage, lost his nose color, so now he looks undead.
Sealing is the way to protect peels, cracks, etc. | | Trades >> Completed: 49 | Bad: Ø | Pending: 0 | Trade & talk Live on IRC! SERVER: irc.psionics.net CHANNEL: #maxminis

The only 5MP camera I've found at that range is http://www.ecost.com/ecost/ecsplash/shop/detail~dpno~758859.asp don't know much about it but I am sure you can find reviews.
I get great results with 5 megapixels 3x zoom. I own a canon though.

Non only do I like to see how people approach things, the colors selected, variations and to see their imagination at work but I find it inspiring; and of course, imitation is the highest form of flattery.
Mine is: http://home.earthlink.net/~dreadwood/glumag/
Glumag, just a suggestion and not a criticism.
When you photograph a mini, use softer light. For all that work on those minis, using a flash on a digital is washing out the detail. You can build a light box from foam core, throw in a work light with a daylight lamp bouncing light into the box, and then take the picture. Your excellent work will show up much better. | | Cum catapultae proscriptae erunt tum soli proscript catapultas habebunt.

I really need to do some better lightwork indeed. I take the pictures indoor and the light in my living room is not enough.
I am a bit slow on this so bear with me please [:D] What I understood is to build a light box from foam core (no idea what foam core is) then throw a work light (a bulb?) with a daylight lamp (?) bouncing light into the box (that last part I got)
Could you put it in a much simpler format or show me some directions? soprry for being plain ignorant on this. [B)]

I can help you a little bit by telling you what foam core is. In simple terms its the stuff that looks like two pieces of posterboard with foam in between it. Its easy to find as you can order it online and even get cheap stuff from walmart. | Photobox info for you glumag! :) Just take some vellum paper. 4 sheets total. You can then use thin strips of wood or the previously mentioned foamcore to frame it. Basically just take thin strips (1/2 inch or so) glue to borders. Glue or tape the 3 framed pieces together and then place the top one on. For lighting, should actually have 2-3 light sources from the outside. on top,and both sides. The vellum will soften the light and get rid of any spots or glares. As for a 'daylight' bulb, he is probably referring to a true light bulb. usually purple in color. give a much more white color than a normal bulb, closer to sunlight. There is a better step by step out there, don't think I have it bookmarked anymore. Can send pics of my photo box once I get that cam if it will help :D

Thanks for sharing everyone - it's really interesting to see what other people have done. The link to my repaints is in my signature. Latest ones are first. Comments welcome. (Yes I know the early ones are shiny - that varnish/sealer said it was matt, but wasn't really - I've now changed to something flatter). Enjoy. [:)]

Glumag, Thokk just about got in. I used to be a fashion and tabletop video photographer, so I used too much short hand.
A daylight lamp is one balanced to 5500 - 5600 degrees kelvin (which is tech talk for just like outside). You get them in a photostore. They cost ten bucks, and last 25 hours, but the advantage is you simple need a silver bell work lamp.
This is foam core: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist& A=details&Q=&sku=241997&is=REG&addedTroughType=search
unlike Vellum, it won't catch fire easily, and you can get several pieces. If you were hard core, I would go into F-Stop and Lux and all that crap, but what you are really trying for is soft light. So you take a 250 watt photo bulb (which will light paper and melt minis if it gets to close) and build a box with four pieces of the stuff, two walls missing to shoot in the light and to shoot in the camera. This is a poor man's light box.
Think of it this way -- your goal is to diffuse light. The best light box is made from silk, but that costs bucks. Go to any art store and ask for foam core. Any smart artsy type knows what it is (it is often used to back posters for hanging). | | Cum catapultae proscriptae erunt tum soli proscript catapultas habebunt.
