I have been contemplating this very type of thing for a while now. Using Hirst Arts floor tiles I have been using in my RPG for about four or five months a magnetic board, which the tiles can adhere to by use of a magnetic paint. The use of walls is something that I feel is the last step of the project. As the use of walls as you point out, while stunning (as your terrain is) it limits a lot of the movement/placement of figs. I have come up with the idea of making the walls removable. I am working on a couple ideas for the Hirst Arts block aspect. I just thought that I would share as it may be a spring board where you can launch into the answer for your project.
