ROFL...

I hate coffee/tea, never drink the stuff. Coca Cola is different altogether... ok well maybe not, but it is definitely our drink of choice. Especially mine. [:D]

I'm eager to see how the rest of it turns out. Are you planning on contructing anything really wild for the top, or is the structural part all done, and now it's all aesthetic?

I occasionally amuse myself imagining the table I would create if I had the space to put one. I think one of the problems I would run into is having it large enough that everything fits well on it, yet small enough that we don't need to yell across it, and it fits in most rooms. But then again, for many years, our gaming table of choice was a ping-pong table (5'x9').

Hehe.. oops [:I], I just realised that I never stated what it was for... It will mainly be for playing WarHammer Fantasy Battles and WH40K on, but it will also be utilised for any 'jungle' D&D RPG (well the minis) play also. The structural part is all but done now. The next lot of pics of the table will show it painted, and the top will have a permanent GW Static Grass mat glued to it.

Ah yes.. I fondly remember playing D&D RPG and many boardgames on my father's old Ping Pong table, and then his Snooker table, when the ping pong table gave out it's last ping and went pong...

Structurally, it is looking really good. I am looking forward to the photos of the next stages.

Now I am considering making a very similar table. I would probably be making the same basic table that you have posted thus far. I would use a nice looking masonite for the edges all the way around (that way I don't have to spend too much time sanding the sides). Also, I would put a sheet of vinyl covering the entire surface of the 8 foot by 4 foot table. The vinyl would be covered with a 1 inch grid. On top of the vinyl would go a layer of thin plexiglass. This way, I could use wet erase markers to draw dungeon maps/rooms. I would need some way of attaching the plexiglass to the table. I don't know yet, but we may want two layers of plywood as the base of the table. I am thinking of finding a place to order a sheet of plexiglass from. Maybe I could have them put holes for screws at regular intervals in the plexiglass.

How sturdy are those legs? How heavy is the table, and how would it work if you needed to use it for something besides gaming? Would it support the weight?

I am currently outside doing the sanding of the top of the table. (Well not RIGHT at this moment, obviously). I am not a small man (6'2" and 120kg's) and I am putting alot of weight down on the electric sander, and I haven't gone through it, yet.

Seriously though....

The legs seem extremely stable. Of course there is a slight 'wobble factor' but that is to be expected, it isn't a Snooker Table after all.

I haven't mustered the bravery yet to try and physically get on the table, but I can't forsee 120kg being on there at any given time anyway. It easily supports me leaning on it (reaching across to the other side), and when I apply my full weight on either side or end it doesn't overbalance at all.

All in all, I would say it is pretty damn good, for a first attempt at building that is.

Total weight I would say would be in the 10kg-15kg range.

Well here is the 'ready to paint' table. All screws patched over with wood filler, and sanded.

The first coat of paint has been applied, and it is all starting to come to fruition. I am quietly pleased with the outcome thus far. The color is Brunswick Green. (Just happens to be the color we are going to use to paint the eves around the house.

Nice DF, gives me some options to think about since I will be outfitting my new game room with something along these lines in the next few weeks/months. My concern is if 4' x 8' will be big enough or if I need to go slightly bigger? Our gaming group is known to have some sizeable encounters. We routinely use two Large Megamats side by side to cover a couple of large folding banquet tables when we play and I want to be sure to have at least that much room.

One thing I have thought about is picking up some computer Keyboard shelves that you can screw to the underside of a desk and putting some of them around the table to act as extra shelves for the players and free up some of the table top. The other thing is looking at some cup holders as well to hold drinks at the table, but not on it. I have lots of scrap lumber left over from the contractors building the addition (which includes the new game room...[:D]) so I might be looking at some wooden legs and struts for diagonal support to make the table extra strong and rigid.

Something I am also thinking about is rounding the corners to avoid snagging the passing gamer who in turn will earthquake the table. The last thing I am thinking about is the table height. If I make the table a bit lower than a normal table, people will not be able to put their legs under the table while sitting on a chair, BUT, it will be easier to have a better view of the map, slightly more top down, if you will. I currently am thinking of having the table legs be adjustable for a couple of heights (normal and low, with perhaps an 8" height difference between the two.) thoughts...

Built the addition for this addiction, now on to the "gaming table" project....

Heya Zenako;

You have covered basically every idea I had, but with my table, I was aiming at keeping the total cost under $100AU, which I managed. The only thing you didn't cover was something I have since thought of, and am going to do in the future.

Around the outer edge of the table I am going to attach a length of MDF/Ply which will be 2-3 millimeters higher than the edge itself. This will provide a 'lip' of sorts around the edge of the table, but not a big enough lip for people to catch minis or scenery on, which would then tear the lip from the side of the table. The idea for the lip is many-fold...

1) To help keep out of control dice on the table.
2) Minis very near the edge, will have less chance of falling off the table.
3) Pencils, erasers, rulers, paper, etc.. less chance of falling off.

Anyway.. here is the table with it's final coat. Now it's just down to the final cleaning up of the table, and covering it with a 6'x4' GW Static Grass Battlemat.

[:I][}:)][B)] - PROBLEM!!!
I knew at the outset of making this table, that my GW battlemat was only 6'x4'. I figured, no worries, I'll just purchase a second one from FLGS and cut off the 2'x4' section I need to finish the table. Sigh... My visit to the FLGS was very uneventful. GW Australia now will only ship the battlemats in a box of 10!! At $50.00AU each (retail), and with me being the only person to have purchased one in the last 3 months, my FLGS owner has had to decline my want for him to order me in 1 GW Battlemat. So now I will have a 6'x4' playing area, and a 2'x4' 'blank' area.. sigh.

**MY PLEA FOR HELP**
If anyone out there has one of these said GW Battlemats, and you are willing to part with it, for an appropriate amount of Uncommons, PLEASE.. take a look at my h/w list and let me know if there is anything at all (that I have for trade) that you would want.

(Aussie maxminis users would be preferable, but I will not say no to whoever offers. (well the first person with a fair offer anyway).

Thanks

DF

Does the map need to be official, or would an 8 feet by 4 feet vinyl map made personally by me do the trick?

Is it a 1 inch grid? If it's hexes, I don't think I could do it. If it's a square grid like a DDM map, there is the possibility I could make one. I just did a battle map on vinyl the same size as the DDM skirmish map.

I don't know the exchange rate. I could probably do it for you for about $30 US plus shipping/handling if you are interested. This is all assuming that the map would be a one inch grid.

I need to make one of these for the table I will be making that you have inspired me to make anyway. Partly due to the fact that you inspired me to do this, and partly just because, I am willing to do it for that amount for you. What do you think?

Heya Corim;

Wow, thanks dude, but unfortunately, the GW Battlemat is not quite what you are thinking of, actually, it's nothing like that.

The GW Battlemat is a 6'x4'..... mat of Static Grass, no lines/hexes/grids. Here is a pic of the Battlemat I am talking about...

This is what the mat looks like (best I can go to explain by use of photo).

I do sincerely thank you for the offer though.

That mat looks very nice. Since I don't play the game(s) associated with that kind of mat, I was unaware that they existed.

Is there any use for the extra 2 feet of table surface you will have (until you can get a 2 foot section)? A place for dice, pieces, etc? Maybe 1 foot on either side of the table could be left open. I don't know Warhammer very well (it is Warhammer isn't it?)

Do you want me to look into pricing for one of those here in the states? If so, give me all the information I would need to find one. Maybe someone else in Australia can find one (the postage would be less, I assume).

Hi Darkfather, Very impressive table.
You could buy directly from Games Workshop in Australia.
Here's the link to their online shop
http://oz.games-workshop.com/storefront/store.oz?do=List_Models&code=300992&orignav=300810
If you don't want to buy online, I could go to one of their shops for you - there are a number near me. But it will probably end up costing more for postage than getting it direct.
Let me know.
Megan.

Although anything I could contribute would only risk the quality of the table (carpentry and I parted ways long ago with mutual distrust) I am enjoying this thread a lot! It's like watching a novel unfold.

Heya Guys;

Firstly for Corim & Smithmeg;

I think I will wait for a while on purchasing said 2nd map. I will bide my time for a short while and see if anything turns up on Ebay. Thankyou for the offer though, they are much appreciated.

Secondly;

Well the table is all but finished (with the mat now firmly in place). Below are some pics I took of the table with all of my completed scenery (thus far) on it. (No minis though, they are going to be a seperate thread).

So far that is only making use of the 6' area the mat is covering. Hopefully by days end I will have some more pics of the completely finished table. (With some new ideas [ok stolen from Zenako ideas] added)

Thanks for the praises guys.

Thanks for the permission to 'steal away' there Z. I am going to attempt your keyboard drawer idea, and possible the drink holder idea.

The 'Stonehenge' scenery was made by my youngest son a couple of years ago (he was 9yrs old then), not too shabby for a first attempt at making scenery.

The scenery was just placed on the table for the photo opportunity, I would never mix those scenery pieces together otherwise. (Aztec Ziggurat, Scottish (Dwarven) Mine, English Stonehenge, Canadian Pine Forest, & Australian Bushland... hehehe)

Wow... nearly covered all the corners of the globe on my little 6ft table top there...

I don't see any problem with combining those elements. Hey, it's fantasy. If fantasy, then Aztec, Scottish, English, Canadian, Australian, etc. shouldn't mean a whole lot.

I think it would be interesting playing a game with all that scenery in place. Of course, I don't know the rules, but it would be interesting for me to watch it.

Heya Corim;

From a gaming P.O.V. there is no problem at all combining that scenery and playing on that table as is. But I am kind of a 'purist' when it comes to designing scenery. I like my table tops to be very .... 'Area Specific', I guess you could say.

As far as the Ziggurat is concerned, it is being made as part of a WarHammer: Lustria Campaign scenery set, which I am seriously contemplating donating to my FLGS.

Anyways...

Heya Zenako, here is one of your ideas put to practice.

Look carefully between the legs of the table. I stole Z's idea of placing drink holders on the table. At this time (since only 2 people play WarHammer at a time - as a rule), there are only 2 drink holders on the table, one at each end.

This pic is just for Kestral.ca. [)] The Drink holders that I purchased, came from Big W (Aussie version of Walmart I guess). They cost me the grand total of $2.48AU each. They will hold (as shown) a 600ml softdrink bottle, or can, or appropriately sized glass.

Here is a top-down view of the drink holder in use.

Here is the top down view of the table edge when item not in use. I simply attatched it in such a way that it rotates back under the table when not being used, therefor no excess bumping of the table when moving around trying to ascertain LoS, or moving units of minis.

I am still trying to obtain the 'Keyboard Drawers' that Zenako mentioned. Failing that, I am going to make my own out of basic Computer desk keyboard drawers, mounted to a wooden frame. The frame will hang down (under the table) less than the drink holders, so they shouldn't affect the 'fold-ability' of the table in anyway. (As far as storage reasons are concerned).

Appologies for the lack of quality of the final pic.

AS anyone who has played for any time can attest, spills will happen when drinks are on the table. Not every session, but enough to be a pain and sometimes to soak things that people wish had remained dry, like books.

Those are almost exactly the type of cup holders I was thinking about. And if they get broken, cheap to replace.
