| Scoring-- To mark the surface of (meat, for example) with usually parallel cuts. (From Dictionary.com)
I don't know what you are attempting to "score". If there is a surface with a series of parallel lines on it, I think it would probably mean to make cuts running the full length of the dotted lines.
Now that I have read the instructions you have printed another time, I think it might be trying to tell you to make cuts that don't go all the way through the paper. This would let you fold it more easily without making a hole.
Scoring is not used very often for this meaning. That's why it took me a while to interpret it. Context usually helps a lot with interpretation. | | "Look to God and live." Alma 37:47 Vindicated Champ of Hippogriff (Arcadian Hippogriff) and Uncommon Horse

| Scoring means to drag the knife along the lines on the paper (in this case denting the paper). The ruler's there to keep the line straight. This "scoring" helps the paper to fold along the desired line.
Yes, mountain folds and valley folds refer to the direction of the fold. Mountain fold means the fold is toward you (and edges away) while valley fold means the fold is away from you (and edges closer).
You'll sometimes see "scoring" when dealing with thicker materials like foam board or cardboard. In those cases, scoring generally means to cut about half-way through it's thickness (with a sharp knife) so that the thick material can actually fold.

Not at all, thanks for the reply, it helps clarify as I was still a bit confused. [:D] | | Trades >> Completed: 49 | Bad: Ø | Pending: 0 | Trade & talk Live on IRC! SERVER: irc.psionics.net CHANNEL: #maxminis

| | I've downloaded the free hovel also. I will get around to making one or two later. Thanks for pointing out to us. I think that kestral.ca's explanation is a bit better than mine. I was "stabbing in the dark" without experience with models like that. | | "Look to God and live." Alma 37:47 Vindicated Champ of Hippogriff (Arcadian Hippogriff) and Uncommon Horse | |

[:D] It'll be my first try too. I wanted to give paper model a shot as the hirst(sp?) ones are a bit expensive. Worldworks is looking really sweet too but since this was free I just wanted to see if I had the skill for that. | If you enjoy making the paper models, Wizards also has a bunch for download as well: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/fpm/archive. I think some of these made it into the Map Folio 3D but these are available for download as well.
My brother-in-law made a bunch of these and they do look pretty good. I've also made the arena from WorldWorks and it's turned out quite nice. The paper is certainly easier, cheaper (in some ways -- ink & paper are still expensive), but they definitely need a lot more care in transport and storage. I suggest you buy your cardstock in large packages (ex. 500) as it gets pretty expensive otherwise.

| gah! I forgot about the wizards' ones! Yeah those look nice too.
Hmmm, I didn't print it on cardstock, I just used a somewhat thick paper, when I am done I'll see if it holds up some minis [:p]
I have access to a professional printer at my brother's job...does poster size too [:D] | | Trades >> Completed: 49 | Bad: Ø | Pending: 0 | Trade & talk Live on IRC! SERVER: irc.psionics.net CHANNEL: #maxminis

I've started work on the tower. I am down with the base (made a grass-type grid terrain) and got the rocky part and inner chamber done so far. Since I wasn't using cardstock I opted on filling the emptiness with cotton balls [:D] I like it! nice and sturdy and the Large minis hold perfectly well. That tower is barely 1 inch scale. The minis look good in it but they would fit perfect without bases. | | Trades >> Completed: 49 | Bad: Ø | Pending: 0 | Trade & talk Live on IRC! SERVER: irc.psionics.net CHANNEL: #maxminis

| Ideally, scoring would be something like cutting only the top half of the thickness of the paper, so that it folds better. I've had good success (with some practice on scrap paper) with using the sharp corner of a metal ruler, or the end of a scissor blade. I think you might be able to use a pizza cutter to make an indent or crease in the paper to help it fold better.
Another suggestion for cutting paper comes from my Mom, who makes quilts. There is a kind of rotary blade cutter that she uses to cut fabric. It looks like a pizza cutter (round blade & handle) but the blade is made of surgical steel or something like that.Extremely sharp so be careful if you use one. A good straight-edge ruler and one of those, and you'd be in business. Check the fabric aisle in WalMart, or the local Quilt fabric store. | | Any time you try to make something idiot-proof, someone always goes out and invents a better idiot. Yeah, it looks like a spur, my mother gave me the same tip, I do own one now [:D] | | Trades >> Completed: 49 | Bad: Ø | Pending: 0 | Trade & talk Live on IRC! SERVER: irc.psionics.net CHANNEL: #maxminis

| for anything up to and including thick cardboard, I would suggest scoring with the back of a knife, or something else narrow , blunt, and smooth (a thin butter knife perhaps). I hate the way paper gets fuzzy when you cut through part of it and then fold it. the thicker the card, the more blunt your scoring item should be. I've folded corrougated cardboard very cleanly by scoring it with a boxcutter with no blade (just the blunt metal tip). All you need is a gentle crease so the material will follow it when it folds. if you want a razor-sharp corner, fold over all the way and crease with the back of your fingernail or a rounded plastic item (to prevent scuffing the material) | | | |
