I just painted (actually my girlfriend just painted) my new tourney army and it has a fiery theme for each piece. So now I'm trying to make the bases look like a lava and ash terrain. I started by painting the bases with a red/orange color and then put a layer of glue over it and dipped it in some black sand. After that I tried to draw lines through the sand so that the red showed through like lava streams. The problem is that the sand keeps scraping off really easy and when I draw the lines through the sand, it bunches up and makes clumps. Can anyone give me some tips on how to better achieve my desired results. A special glue or technique? I'm all new to the crafting side of miniatures so any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
I have no clue, sorry, just wanted to ask if you would be so kind as to post some pics when done with the project, sounds interesting [:D] | | Trades >> Completed: 49 | Bad: Ø | Pending: 0 | Trade & talk Live on IRC! SERVER: irc.psionics.net CHANNEL: #maxminis

| | I'm definately hoping to post pics of the whole warband when it's completed. Unfotunately I'll have to figure out how to do that also, but at least I have the digital camera and cords.ΖD] | | | |

| The best way I have ever seen 'fire/lava' bases done was...
Mount the mini on a small piece of packing foam (from around a TV/Fridge/etc), then paint the entire foam piece Red. Then Drybrush Orange, then a final highlight of Yellow. Now the hard part - Drybrush the entire block Black.
You should end up with a piece of foam that looks like a piece of charcoal that is still 'red hot' in the centre.
Hope this helps.

| Here's an idea for the sand:
To put the sand on, you put glue on and then dipped it in sand.
Now try this: Pour more clear glue on top of the sand so that when this glue dries, you can paint over the top without the sand getting knocked off.
I don't have experience with this technique, so if there's someone else who thinks this is bad, please let us know.
If someone tries this and it works, let us know too. | | "Look to God and live." Alma 37:47 Vindicated Champ of Hippogriff (Arcadian Hippogriff) and Uncommon Horse

| Inexpensoive and effective:
Paint a solid, plastic (or whatever) base with the above mentioned red/orange/yellow. Take an open-cell foam sponge -not a sink sponge- more like weather stripping. Thin the black coat to near ink. Dip the foam and dab the base- works best if you mount the mini After!
This works for "marble" effects also. | | Trades Completed: RedneckDM, mazra, MackeyJ, MrRuffles, Kithmaker, bassman2972, Count Dooku, Corim Danex, LanceH, boba fan 84, bugsy, m0nj0mb0, bojangles, gausse x2, ihawk, magen144, joeyb Trades Enroute from Me: Trades I'm Waiting For: Trades Disputed: none Trades Negotiating:

| Here is how I have done painting bases (and if someone would host pic I would send them to them). I have done something similar with grass effects on metal bases so I would thing that it would be the same idea. First using Elmer’s glue, AKA white PVA glue “paint” a thick glue clump. But be sparing with the clumps of glue as to much will make the base look strange and not let the lava effect be the drawing attention to the base. Now, before the glue dries take the mini and the base that has the glue and drag it through the sand. Do this a couple or three times to pack the dirt into the glue. This will let the sand particles and dirt attach to the glue and will aid in not getting knocked off. Now let the base completely dry with the glue. Then make the base black by painting it with a cheap acrylic. In fact you might want to thin your paint down with water as not to obscure any of the rocky details. Now once the black paint has dried go back and dry brush the base a gray. This will bring out the black shadows on the rocks. Let this stage dry and then go back into the spaces between the rocks and paint it a white, use care not to get white on the rocks that you just painted. Once the white is dried thin a little dark red down and paint the white areas between the rocks. I suggest painting the white to save time as red is a color that doesn’t “cover” black real well. Then blend up the areas with a bright orange or yellow. If you want to try a “wet” blend this would add to a smoother transition of the colors and a brighter lava effect. This again is just how I would do this and my opinions can be taken with a grain of salt and a little bit of greens on the side [:D]

| | Wow, that base looks great. I just wish I could put a DDM mini on top of something like that. Thanks for the link! | | | |
