From the sounds of it you might want to look into resin. I know that it is talked about on the HA site quite a bit as it is much lighter than the standard dental plaster.

Just throwin out another option for ya!!!

You need the liquid plastic and the catalyst.

I dont have the brand handy but Michaels craft stores carrys all you need.

The liquid plastic will come usually in a tin rectangle can, much like paint remover cans. Small screw opening on top. Cost me 6.95 for about 1.5 litres of liquid plastic.

The catalyst comes in a tiny plastic bottle (about 2 inchs tall) Its labeled as catalyst. Costs about 5 dollars per small bottle but it lasts for a LONG time! (you only add drops of the stuff to liquid plastic to set the hardening in motion)

If you dont have a michaels then poo :( I will check the brands when I get home and post!

Either way, its great man. You basically mix the plastic with catalyst, pour it in and 30 minutes or so later your done :) I usually wash mine off with cold water (plastic has oily residue, or maybe thats my fault from making molds in playdough) when I take it out of the mold, let dry for a few minutes then prime with some spraypaint.

(Half the items I make I just press into playdough, fill the hole with plastic then presto, im done. Cut off excess flash is all and paint.)

I did copy an dwarven mercenary or something, just the top half and his leg so I could put a dead dwarf in game :P Not really needed but I thought it was neat. (We RP, so dead bodys can be searched and stuff)

****EDIT****

Its Castin'Craft brand both items

Clear Liquid Plastic Casting Resin
and
Catalyst for Polyester Resin

If you mold/cast a figure, does it have the proper weight? I mean, I presume that DDM figs don't have armatures or anything...if I just reproduce one via molding/casting, will it *feel* right?

Thanks!!! That's what I just went and bought. Now to start my first molds.[:D] I bought the $20.00 can of the casting resin and the bottle of the catalyst. That sould be more than enough for me to get started with.

Please post back your results and what you make and how ya made it :)

Maybe we can get a good plastics tutorial up or somethin :) (is there one already?)

Ill work on figuring out better ways than I currently use to get molds and to create figures.

BEWARE!!!!!!!!!!
DO NOT MIX ANY OF THIS IN PLASTIC CONTAINERS! Unless its good plastic. When the plastic sets, it gets hot. Melted through a cheapo plastic cup I used to stir the resin in and right onto my table. hehe Now ive got a lovely discolored circle where I had to scrape the extra plastic off :P But just tellin you before hand, mix it in either a metal container or in something thats not made of plastic.

*edit*
oh yeh also!
I made a piece of plastic, about 3/4th an inch thick and 4 inchs long. I cant bend it at all or even attempt to break it. Its just like youd expect a plastic handle on a knife to be or something. Was my first attempt at plasticizing a flower :P

They also have colors for the plastic resin, looks like little food coloring bottles. Ive never gotten them or seen how they turn out so wouldnt recommend getting those unless youve got time and money to spare :)

Thanks for the info japakar. I have some teflon coated metal trays I'll be using for the mixing. As for the coloring dye, I passed on getting that since I'll be painting them anyway.
My first attemt is going to be simple stone walls. I've designed them to interlock, so hopefully they'll work. I'm going to use molding clay to make the molds for them. It worked when I made windows and water for my fountain So I'm gonna give it a shot for the walls. They're only gonna be about 1/4" each then glue the two sides together. If this technique doesn't work, I'll find some other way. I'll post picks when I get a sample section done to show if it worked well.
I'm glad to hear it's strong resin. That was one of my main concerns.

AAARGH!!!![:(!]
Well, I was getting ready to make my first mold. Geez latex sucks big time. I think I'm gonna try RTV instead.
(Sorry, cries of frustration)

Thanks but I'm not real expert with casting... Materials are hard to get here and expensive, and they are different from those used overseas. And, I'm always struggling with some problems when casting [:P]

RTV is the way to go. About resins, I think there's kind that has only catalyte to make it stiffen, but I've always preferred ones that must be mixed from two components in equal amounts.

I once made water from a clear resin in a clear plastic cup. Instructions said I should leave it in a cup for 1/2 hours so the bubbles can come up... I used this plastic cup, and I had quite a surprise when I came back. With resins I've used recently, I've had no problems even with thinner plastic cups.

Vacuum and tremble are good when making molds, and I've heard that pressure rather than vacuum should be used when casting resin. Haven't had chance for that, but my electric toothbrush makes nice tremble [:p] I also use toothpick carefully in difficult places to ensure resin going in.

2-part molds would be good, but I'm not big fan of those...

OK. RTV molds rock. They came out perfectly and in less than 4 hours.[^]
Now my next question is, I'm using Clear poylester resin that has the 10:1 mix ratio. How long is the average dry time for the tackyness to dry up? They came out of the molds great looking, but after setting overnight they still are a bit sticky to the touch. They didn't "heat up" that much, so maybe I didn't use enough catalyst?
Also, I want to experiment with other mediums as well. Is there anything else I can uses that's moderatly durable? I know plaster is one, but it's a little fragile. Is there anything similar that is a little tougher?

Thats what I was sayin, the little oily-ness or sticky on the outside I just wash off with water and then let sit dry or whatever (I dont rub a towel on it, good god the bits of fabric!!)

After I wash them they seem fine :)

Hope that helps! I am not sure why they "sweat" that stuff out but water usually takes care of itl.

And dont worry about the ratio, Ive never done it right. I always put like 5-10 drops of catalyst n o matter how much plastic im making :P Works good so far.

I've also had problems with that kind of resin... I can only tell you to use 1:1 resins next time [:P]

Japakar, that's interesting to hear, I've never thought of washing those!

About other materials, dental plaster is pretty hard, although really heavy (and costs some). I found mine at dental technician who makes dentures.

Thanks. I'll do that. Other than being a little sticky, they seem pretty solid.

I looked for the 1:1 resins and can't find anything around here like that. I may have to end up ordering some stuff from Alumilite. I really like their Silicone mold maker stuff. It works perfect.
As for the dental plaster, again, same problem. I can't find it anywhere.
