Paper mache could work--it's not that durable though. I wonder if it could be done in hard plastic somehow...like those plastic dinosaurs in "Pee Wee's Big Adventure."

What are the dimensions that a "life-size" beholder would have?

It sure would look odd on the front porch on Halloween...

You'd probably find out that there were people in the area that know about D&D that you didn't know knew about D&D.

How did they make that fake shark head on Myth Busters? That might work for a Beholder.

squarescales and I were sort of mapping it out in a room. If it adhered to the scale of the miniature, it would be absolutely enormous: occupying about 7" x 7" x 10" of space (if you include the height of all his eye tentacles).

When you think about it that way, it really puts the menacing nature of the Beholder in perspective. I found myself rethinking the recent game night where we casually blew one away in a RPG adventure.

That's probably true. The nerdiest aspect is not dreaming about a Beholder, or even a life-size Beholder--it's dreaming about finding a *retailer* of life-size Beholder. Ridiculous!

Inflatable holiday lawn ornaments seems like a good place to start. Something like this could be modified into a Beholder:

Smart. This might make a good inflatable armature:

And look, it's already eating children.

One thing that seems to work well for mythbusters as said above is that foam. Not sure the type but its basically used for any type of sculpting of large items. You carve the basic shape using sand paper and knives (easily cut away, similar to florests foam they stick flowers in)

What id do off the top of my head is build the wire frame, paper mache it then take your time and layer plastic over the object until its coated. It would take a few days I am sure and a bit of plastic resin but youd have a hollow plastic beholder that was transparent, once you painted it it would appear to be a completly 1 piece hollow beholder.

Another very VERY good option is fibreglass.
You can make subwoofer boxes for your car out of it, I am sure it would make an awesome beholder! As said before youd make a wire frame and this time just layer on the fibreglass strips until you were satisfied with the thickness and coverage. Presto, let it dry sand off the rough spots and prime. Its ready for paint!

There are tons of tutorials for fibreglass out there.

Thinking again, I think fibreglass would be the best option.
