very cool, but the background kills the detail as the mini blends into it or were you going for a chamaleon magma para elemental? [:D]

I like the elemental itself, the base from this angle looks a bit like a pumpkin.

It is too hard to distinguish from the background.

I think that stone will allow for better contrast. That sounds like a good choice.

Much easier to see now...

The blacks, reds, browns, etc. are looking really good. The color shift from bright yellow to black might be too much. Can the yellow be softened (by being darkened to a different shade or color)? I don't know what would be best. Anyone else have ideas? I don't have experience painting fire/elemental fire types, so I can't quite put my finger on what I am trying to say.

I really like the way the dark and orange colors interact on the right side (from our perspective looking at the picture).

Yeah..I am not real happy with the yellow either. alot of the light and dark orange got covered over with the brown and black highlighting. I went through and did touch ups with bright orange on alot of edges to try to soften the transition. might just put more down in the crevases. dunno. have 2 more. one I want to do as ice too!

Will start on ice one this weekend. Might try an orange wash to see if I can tone down the yellow. But worried it might goof some other colors. will try on a small area and see.

On the next magma one you do, start with orange base instead of yellow, maybe.

One thing I'd like to suggest is maybe making the darker patches larger. While the figure looks pretty good, it's also a bit busy (IMO). By making the "crusty" bits take up more space, it should help give the orange/yellow spaces a bit more punch.

But other than that, I'd say it looks pretty impressive.

Much better pictures! I have to agree with CotCB - it is a bit too busy. I would use a little dark grey (DC charcol) or really dark brown (DC walnut) to broaden out the dark spots. They should add more depth where black is going to contrast too much. You may even want to darken the outsides of the basin that it rests in (to give the glowing geyser effect!)

Otherwise, it is looking pretty good! It is a good concept, done very well.

NEW PICS HERE....

Thanks all for the suggestions. I tried to incorporate them as I wasn't too thrilled with the final product myself [:(]. I did a wash of light orange to darken up the bright yellow. Then went through and did spot darkening with dark brown and then drybrushed with black. Did some minor touches to base. Tell me what you think. And Runelord, which manufacturer is DC? I used all GW paints on this.
Now...on to his icey buddy....and then...something for the 3rd one...

I'm glad I could help out. Yeah, like me running my keyboard was the inspiration...[:o)]

Darkening the crusty bits really helped define some of the form of the figure and give it some weight.

I've always wanted to do an inverse lighting scheme (i.e. being lit from the inside out), and this shows what such a paint job can do.

Thokk, you have done significant improvement on this miniature. It is really looking a lot more like magma. Very good touch up work.

I agree that it looks much better now that it is darker.
