No, but I'd love to see a picture of the final product.

Pardon my ignorance but I don't get decoupaging (cutting into pages?)

It is a bit more complicated, but essentially it is gluing paper down over a surface, then sealing with a clear acrylic. It is usually done with bits of cut up paper (so you are right) but Ive been experimenting with the whole map at once. The biggest obsticle is avoiding buble-up, and that is more difficult the larger the piece of paper you use. I think I've licked it. When it's done I'll post photos, but I'll bring it to Dragon's Lair so you can see it yourself.

Hmmm, this also means you'll have to buy 2 sets of maps. Makes me wonder whether or not your better off to buy 2 and just laminate, and see what happens.

Keep us posted, and share some pictures!

Here we go. I’ve never attached photos to a message before, but here goes.

This is the map on the ground . . .how exciting . . . you can see the edge where I attached it to the paneling.

Here is me holding it in the air so you can see the stiffness. I through a scenario I’m working on.

And here is a shot from below so you can see the felting.

It looks more interesting in person, but you can see how durable it is. I can stand on it if I want to, and my toddler bashes it with her toys when we play together. Now to start on the next one.

To post a picture, you must find a place that can host the image.

You then use the insert picture option up above {img] insert link here {/img]. Except that you use Squared of brackets to start the code as well.

I look forward to seeing them!

That looks good, but I don't get what is what, just looks to me like it is map on plywood on felt.

Is the map glued? Or can you remove and insert others? I don't think it folds, right?

Wood paneling on felt, yes. The map is more than glued, it is sealed in to create one piece. It will take any amount of punishment a tabletop will take and then wipe clean. If it gets scratched, I just have to wet sand it and then lay another layer of finish. I can leave it on the floor, and when my daughter runs across it, it is undamaged. Cat? same thing. I needed a more durable alternative to lamination, and after some experimentation this looked like the best way to make the map PERMANANT. Now you have to try to damage it; any normal accident barely scuffs the surface. It will never crease, never bend, never tear.

I admit, it is a bit unwieldy. But I'll just get a presentation case from OfficeMax for transport, and only carry one or two maps at a time.

(And it is Blue Dragons vs. the Large Red and Orc slaves . . .)

A-ha! that makes more sense now, nice job! Yeah, that thing is short of being bulletproof and should withstand fire and lightning [)]

I would guess it's pretty flammable with several layers of varnish on it, but yeah it should hold up well [:p]

How long did it take to make from start to finish?

Sorry, my little girl pushed the wrong button . . .

Anyway

It took about a week, but only because for best results you need to wait about 8-12 hours between steps. Each step only took about ten minutes each.

What mistakes should one try to avoid if they were going to attempt something like this?

First: DON'T RUSH IT!!!

I can't reinforce this enough. Wait overnight between steps. It makes a huge difference.

Second: Do not use a wet glue to affix the map to the board. If you do, it is almost impossible to prevent bubbling up. Use a glue stick or spray adhesive.

Third: And this is important, seal the boeard before you glue. An unsealed board will soak up the glue and your map will not stick evenly.

Fourth: even and complete coverage of the glue. If you miss a spot, the map will bubble and wrinkle when you apply the first layer of varnish.

Those are the big ones. The rest is technique. Treat it more like wallpaper than scrapbooking.
