I have used some old templates from a Chivarly and Sorcery Supplement whose name escapes me at the moment, but it had some fold out maps of ships and holds that could be used or cut out to put minis on. Those worked pretty well.

Another thing you could consider is go to the toy section in a store and look at some pirates toys. I have a few ships that are big enough to use for minis, they are sturdy plastic and the right scale and provide real good 3d game aids. Usually the Pirates that come with the ship are WAY oversized for the ship itself, but that is fine since you don't need to use the people, just the ship itself.

The DM of my 50 Fathoms game picked up a couple of ships at Origins. I'll have to ask him who did them.

They are sized decently for Reaper minis, so the (slightly) smaller DDMs should work well (he uses square bases also, round DDM bases will work better). The masts can get in the way, but they are removable.

I have a boat I built out of foam board and finish nails. I've been meaning to post pics of it, actually. I mentioned it here a few months back before Stormwrack came out, and somebody asked for pics, but I'm being a perfectionist with the cosmetics.

Anyways, I used 3/8" foam board cut into the size of the deck. I cut more pieces for all the interior walls under the fore and aft castling, as well as the floor areas of the castlings. Pushing up through the bottom of the main deck, I inserted finish nails into the edge of the wall sections to hold them vertical. I did the same thing going down through the floors of the castling. Next, I placed a 1" grid on the decks. For a finishing touch, I added 3D stairs and printed wood paneling to be attached to the walls and edges. I plan on building a helm, mast, and possibly railings and weaponry. I still haven't finished the wallpapering the wood planks, but I have found a lot of use for my wife's scrapbooking tools.

Instead of building from scratch, go here..

http://worldworksgames.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2_6&products_id=27

They do very nice stuff. I have 3 of their sets so far and plan on getting more. And an excellent online support/advice system as well. Highly recommended!

very nice looking. How long would you say it takes to put one of those ships together? Of course if you print those out at home you will blow through a lot of ink I assume...(raising the final cost a bit over that of the files for the masters.)

I haven't put one together myself, but head on over to the forums at worldworksgames.com and ask around. I didn't realize how cool that ship was. Might have to pick one up! Ink isn't too bad. Buy the cheap sets off of ebay (I can get a full set of 6 inks for my printer for less than 20). You want to get some cardstockish paper..about 250lb or so. can get about 250 sheets for maybe 5 bucks. It is a good deal. And if you can occasionally use the color laser printer at work, so much the better [:p]

I have it, it is big and I am not skilled enough to put it together yet. I had enough problems with things fitting together well with the fantasy cut-outs one.

Printing has to be perfect and the folding must be precise otherwise once you start putting things together not all will align perfectly and for this type of things you really are looking for a honeymoon fit and all pieces.

Just to give you an idea, the "sea" grid is 14 pages of 7x7 squares and the reason the file is so big is because it comes with 1 inch grids, bigger (didn't meassure prolly 2.5 inch) grid and no grid.

Looks awesome tho, maybe one of these days or once my son is big enough, that'll be his arts and crafts chores [:D]

A ship...Hmmm, I think I may give that a try. If it works I'll post some pics. Thanks for the idea. Now I just have to explain to my wife why I need to spend more money on craft supplies.[:p]

Lego has a new pirate/viking type ship. It wasn't outrageously expensive, and isn't perfect for minis, but it would definitely work.

I really want to try the worldworks stuff, but my house is full! Where would I keep it?
