Dundjinni is one of the best programs out there. I happen to like it and it is easier to use and learn than Photoshop, which you can use as well. [)]

I can go in detail if you drop me an email [:D]

Why post on enworld when you have knowledgeable skillful and resourceful people right HERE?! [:p]

Well, he is more likely to get more than 1 meaningful response there. From what I've read, dundjinni is the best tool. There are a lot of maps and tiles on their forums, and the users seem supportive.

I don't recommend photoshop from what I can tell from others' recommendations. I seem to read a lot about this stuff, but haven't bitten the bullet yet.

I am likely to go the worldworks route soon, though.

There's a nice link over on lemonbutter for a tilemaker--or just go HERE for the direct route. I believe that the creator is actually a member somewhere on here.

Between that program and some photo-editor work, I've made some nifty (if somewhat simple) tiles. It does take some practice to use, though, as the images stack in a last-on-top method, so you might accidentally overlap something you didn't want to overlap.

The images aren't the easiest to save, though. Basically, if you want to save one to your computer you have to do a screen capture and then drop it into a graphics program and take it from there--although that will allow you to do some fun things, too.

For work I use Visio alot - it's a technical drawing application. It allows snapping-of-grids, etc. I can use it to lay out DDM boards and move around / position the tiles or I can chop things into smaller pieces / squares and build more specific, custom designs.

And I've got it free from work, so that's a bonus.

The black background on ENworld makes it very difficult for me to read anything for very long.

hehe....at the very bottom of the site there's a dropdown that says Default. Change it to Stealth and you'll be all good.

edit: never noticed until now, but I don't see the sticky on custom terrain. Wasn't that in the skirmish forum?

Visio would work well. I know if you check the custom tile thread in the skirmish forum you can find people that have put 1 inch squares of different art out there. That would be easy to use with Visio. I would certainly not buy Visio for this though, and would only use it if I had free access to it.

I actually like the black background on ENWorld for some reason.
