wow! [:D] very nice job! they almost look like glass.

I like both the water elementals...the fire doesn't look like fire but still cool [:D]

The medium air needs to be another color, imho; the large air looks much better in the sense of "air".

Is it possible to drop some sand/dust into the mixture so when it dries the air elemental looks like it is more like a cyclone?

Those are very nice looking [:D] gotta make more and sell of eBay [:)]

or at the least make some nice trades here on the boards for other minis you want but have trouble getting. A few custom elementals for the RPG crowd and you could end up with some good stuff. Someone made a few Gel Cubes last year and did much the same thing.

Built the addition for this addiction, now on to the "gaming table" project....

as for suspending things in the plastic, it starts out as viscous as water, then hardens. so anything put in early will sink very quick. if you wait, you get air bubbles in the plastic and it looks like crap and they break easy.

as for EBAY... how much would you pay for a set of 1 of each fire, water air, and large air?

I would like to do it with a large Fire, but I haven't been able to get ahold of one... I would trade a lot of stuff for a large fire so that I could make the molds. even if i borrowed one off of someone and had a master to use for subsequent molds.

and yeah, if anyone is interested, i can make alot more, in a few colors and paint apps. so if the trades are right, i'm up for any requests.

I did make a G-cube.... remember my thread in GD about "what do you want in your g-cube?" yeah. i chopped up a dolgrim... i'll snap some pics although its still not the greatest.

Well, If you can get ahold of a Fire Elemental and work one up, I will definately put myself on the list for trade of one of those [:D]

And by the by, im sure with a little work you could use the Swarm of Spiders to make an Ooze mold.

Those look really good, WotC should learn from you! [:D]

Fire elemental surely needs some paints, as it looks liquid too, but others might even do it like that. Btw, an idea - have you tried of mixing colours? It might be challenging to do, but pouring clear, red and yellow in thin stripes to that fire elemental (or large air making it fire) might give some interesting results after some experimenting.

Are those resins very smelly and the second component is only catalyst that's mixed to the actual resin? I've never been good with such materials [B)] I don't seem to be able to mix in right amount of catalyst and surface remains sticky.

for suspending stuff, pour only half, let dry. then put in bones, whatever, and pour the rest. Won't work for sand, but works for bones in a gel cube.

Wow those look very nice. I good friend of mine was experimenting with making resin casts of minis, real learning experience for him. Your's look like you have had a bit of practice however.

Here's what I use for my clear fire elementals.

mythmere- have you tried to do the multilayer technique? i know thats how people do like flowers and leaves in paperweights, but i tried it and it seemed a little likely to shear. hasn't yet, but just looks like theres a break... doesn't flow as aesthetically.

as for color mixing/ nifty things that you'd think you can do... the stuff goes from liquid to gel to solid. so its more like a colloid hardening than say water freezing, theres a very touchy medium between liquid and solid in which it will tear easily. so you really can't wait for it to kinda harden or it gets all lumpy/tears. otherwise the liquid is too miscible and yellow + red = brown elemental. looks more like something you'd find on your doorstep on mischief night...

If people want to trade and/or custom order some, i'd love to! I figured some ppl would like them [:)]. i kinda need some trades right now as my underdark case was horrible for me. really really not nice and icky (http://www.maxminis.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=11198) so hit up my h/w list and see if we can strike a deal.[)]

Very interesting stuff--not my taste, but still very interesting. I'm curious to see how the "official" clears will work out.

The Water looks the best, IMO. And the Medium Air is a little "dense" for lack of a better word. Perhaps some grey/thinned WAY down black coloring? Just enough to break up the light as it goes through the resin.

And Jai is sending me a Large Fire Elemental. W00t!!

anyway, i'm making up a batch of new ones for a few trades that I've got going, and I've made a Cursed Spirit that ROCKS. The Magmin is coming along nicely, and i'm working on mass producing the spider swarm, maybe modding it to be another type of swarm or ooze. now i just need to get the Ghostly Consort from another incoming trade, and the spectre from another... wooha!

Anyone think that the Efreeti would look good in clear, then painted? allowing the clouds to remain clear, and painting the body? OOOOH! i got it, i can do the top in red, and the base and clouds in clear, then paint the sword and other non flesh parts, leaving them deep red, but also leaving the clouds clear!!!! sweet. now i just need an efreeti...

Have you considered doing the earth elementals? I ran a campaign using gemstone elementals once.... you can imagine how hard (no pun intended) it is to kill a diamond elemental.

lol, it is pretty hard to kill a diamond elemental... the process that I use though is not very forgiving with legs. i use a one piece molding step, so open areas like legs are off. look above at the water elementals, their legs are filled in (not that you can really tell) I am working on a bunch new models though, spurred on by everyones good words: flaming flamebrother salamander, ghostly gauth, twighlight wraith, invisible illithid, and burning skeleton. it'll be another few days before i have pics up if they work. SO many minis would look much cooler in clear plastic... its silly that they haven't done it yet.

These are very cool cragger! I like the Large Air Elemental the best.

Here's some ideas for you -

If you can do greens, try doing a flaming skeleton in a yellowish green, then paint in the skeletal parts. Instant witchfire skeleton!

Yellowish brown could make a sweet ochre jelly - if you need one I'd be willing to trade for a couple green skellies.

ok, more big pictures. i'm at home on dialup, so the big one thats up will have to be big until i fix it at work tomorow.

anyway, I think i'm getting a little better. Its really hard to paint them in such a way that doesn't take away from the translucence. its a difficult balance between bringing out the details and allowing light to shine through. Like on the Wraith (which I know really sucks on the paintjob...) I want him to have some color, and the details are so great, but I want him to feel ethereal at the same time... the spirit is the same, though he doesn't need as much color.

I'm really happy with the magmin. I had to do a bit of modification to the mold to make him work, so I added more flames underneath him, and I think they came out ok. I'm also pretty happy with the lemure. He seems more like a magma elemental now, but the mold and coloring suits him well. I've pumped out a few of these, and really want to use them in a game :)

I've also been experimenting with the paints and washes on the large air elementals. I think I actually hit it pretty good on the first try, with too much wash making it look real not-airy and no wash making it seem more like Ice than Air. the Blue wash helps keep it smooth while still bringing out the details on the "face" and such, though the paint on the base still makes the bottom half look too dark.

In the works are (still) burning skeletons, flamebrother slamanders (i think i'll have to lose the weapons), and improving on a few more molds. I'm also trying my hand at making my own models to mold off of. The G-Cube is the easiest to mold, but turns out to be not-too-easy to pour and finish... I'm also working on an invisible stalker and a giant beetle (why we still don't have one, i can't imagine).

enough out of me. it be late. work tomorow...

How do you cast minis? I'd like to try this.
I understand that I have to pour the plastic into a mold, but how do you make the mold?

These are some really good looking minis I really like the air elementals but the way they are done they look like what I imagined water elementals should look like, a sharp jagged blue wave.
The water elementals look like they would make good proxies for water weirds.

Have you ever thought about selling or trading them? It looks like you might have quite a few customers here.

On another note this process looks like it could be used to make the gelatinous cube we all want.
