Maybe a Moderator would like to Sticky the above link?

I use acrylic paints from the Wal-Mart crafts section.

google and the search button in this forum work great; there are plenty of topics in the Crafter's Corner alone that have talked about this.

As for internet sites...there's a plenty.

It is hard to give advice because what works for some do not for others. You gotta go thru trial and error and pick what you are more comfortable with.

My one advice is buy acrylic paints...enamel does not give you the best result on repainting ddm.

So for DDM minis that are already painted, do you just paint over the original paint or what??

I do, some people rather prime it but I don't have the time to spare...there is only one mini you could say I have primed and that was my weretiger repaint. Priming does give you a much better result.

I give some info on the paint and process I use on some of my repaints in the link in my signature.

There are far better qualified people here to give you advice, I am but an amateur that gives it a brush or two when I have time.

Yup, or you could apply a base coat. If you read the articles in the link I provided, all of your questions would be answered.

I would definately say take the time to wash and prime your D&D minis before painting.

The releasing agent that they use to get the figures out of the moulds wrecks havoc on anything less than thick gloopy paint.

I use a gentle dish soap and water mix to wash them, then I dry them and prime with a thinned down accyrlic paint (usually black).

If you start a few figures at a time (say 5 or so) the first one you primed should be dry by the time you get to the last one.

[NOTE] If you haven't read the link Username provided, do so first. It explains alot into miniature painting.

Primer

Primer will help the paint adhere to the miniature when you begin painting. Some people use actual primer spray cans found in any major art store (Michaels, Rag Shop, etc.). Others will paint over the whole mini with a matte (non-gloss) layer of paint so additional layers will adhere to that layer. Either method is fine, just keep it as thin as possible and even. I use an airbrush to get a super thin layer of paint for a primer layer.

Paint

You will want to use acrylic paints (water-based). Most people start out with Craft paints (Apple Barrel Colors) because they're cheap ($1/bottle) and can be found in any major art store. However, I personally would recommend Reaper Master Series paints because they spread amazingly well and hold their color when thinned out. Other brands would be Vallejo Game Colors and Citadel Paints. These can be purchased in your local hobby stores or online. When you try one of these series of paint, you will easily see the difference compared to Craft paints.

That is enough to get you started. There are alot of techniques to be used when painting minis. Again, visit the link provided by Username for a look at some of these techniques. Other sites I would recommend are:

www.reapermini.com (Craft section)
www.warhammer.com (Go to either Warhammer Fantasy or 40k. They offer alot of tips).

The miniatures listed on those sites are either hard plastic or metal as opposed to the D&D, Star Wars, or A&A minis. However, the basic principles are the same.

If you have any specific questions, feel free to email me at tatsu45@gmail.com . Hope this helps.

I do pretty much the same as runelord, except I prime with white, then do a very thin black ink wash so I can see the detail. (I've found this works best for me).
In my opinion, it is not worth trying to get the original paint off - there is a very fine line between where the paint is removed, and where the surface of the mini starts to peel off - and you don't gain enough to justify the risk.
For paints, I started out using ordinary craft paints, and they work quite well (but I got really annoyed at the amount of paint I was wasting). The thing I noticed when I swithed to acrylic model paints was how much easier it was to get to same quality paint job. I don't think the overall quality improved much, but it was easier to do.
One last comment, while GamesWorkshop/Citadel paints are readily available pretty much everywhere, the eye dropper tops on Vallejo and Reaper Master Series are wonderful (and are worth the extra effort it might take to get them).
If you are interested, the link to my repaints is in my signature - they are basically in chronological order (with the newest ones first).

Do you all prime the whole thing, and repaint the whole thing? I'm not that ambitious. I was planning, on most minis, to just repaint certain aspects or details.

I started off just touching up a few bits, but quickly found that (as my painting improved) the whole mini needed to be 'touched up'.
But, it's a good place to start.

There is no right or defined way. Do what you feel comfortable with. If you wish to start off with minor highlighting or color scheme changes, go for it.

If you know what you'd like done to your miniature, you can post that and we can address it specifically. That way we can offer suggestion or advice on how to achieve your needs.

Well, I just did three minis. I touched up the Skeletal Equiceph and Trog Barbarian. I painted the Trog Captain so now he has pearl white armor.
