I actually started with a black base, then applied a thin dark green wash. I waited for that to dry, then picked out each scale in a series of 4 blended highlights. It's too bad I can't get really close pictures, because the effect up close is really nice!
You can just about see it in the scales where his neck snakes up to his head. Look really close and you can see a slightly brighter spot on some of the scales!
As for adding a clear coat of some kind, I'm not sure what I would use. I would guess that there is some kind of irridescent type paint out there, but I've never really looked for it. | | | |

| If I were "shopping" for the couatl I would want to see now, it would be the serpent painted the way you did (with the fantastic scales, both the green side and the white side) with your level of quality put into the rainbow wings.
I'm not shopping--I just think that would look awesome. I really like the way you painted the wings. It just makes me curious what your skill would have made the orignial color scheme look like. | |
