Hey all...I'd like to add treasure hordes to the bases of figures like my dragons for some RPG flavor. Does anyone know where I can locate miniature gold, silver, etc. coins to glue to the base of my LBD, etc. Thanks.

How about the gold from Pirates of the Spanish Main. The gold is also in the sets after. They're little cardboard circles with numbers on them 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10.

Micheals carries a "bead" product that comes unpunched. Some of them are small gold circles (2-5mm) and they even make "gemstones" in the same size that are facitied on one side. I'll have to dig out the packaging and see who makes them.

Also, model train and aircraft stores may carry wood dowels that can be sawed into thin slices and used to represent coins. Most of them are too thick, but I think I've seen 5mm before.

An easy way to make coins is to take a thin roll of putty and slice it into sections. Alternativly some minature companies like Reaper make "Treasure Horde" minatures that you could use.

I have some of those! My DM got a set and gave me a small gold, medium copper, and large silver pile which I repainted. I made a small copper, medium gold, and large platinum coin pile out of them.

Actually, I may go back and paint them all gold and use them to base my Huge Red Dragon with. I doubt it though.

Lego is the most easy option, but the expensive too! I guess they sell single pieces on internet, other options is to look on shining beams used for 80`clothing sorry i don´t speak english very good so let me explain, they are made in plastic, small, circular formed like a Long play disc and they shine.

Glitter. I know it sounds tacky but bear with me.

Most glitter is just randomly chopped up bits that are far too large in scale, but I found one brand at my local dollar store that is actually made up of tiny circular pieces, each no bigger than a milimetre (which makes them about 1/2 inch diameter in minis scale).

For $2 I got a small pack with tubes or gold, silver, red, green, and blue in it which allows for a mix of coins and the occassional sparkle of a gem here and there.

Right now I am experimenting with washes to give an aged look. I'll post pics when I am done.

I agree with Sulaco -- find round glitter at your FL craft store. that's what I used for my gelatinous cube. I picked up just a gold and silver tube; for gems you'll do better with foilbacks from a rock store.

Saw some really nice treasure piles made from plaster.

Press the head of a small nail into some clay repeatedly until you form a nice negative and pour in some plaster. Paint it up and you have an instant treasure pile for cheap.

One thing most people overlook today is an old practice of how LEGO shipped its "light" (translucent plastic) pieces. Originally, these were shipped in the sets of 2 still connected to the central extrusion piece. It looked like a pair of the round lights with a central piece of oddly-shaped plastic.

A rough example: O+O

O = the round light
+ = the cross-piece connecting them

They are difficult to explain, but the LEGO gold pieces once came in a similar way (they still might), except there were 4 per "connected set"

Since I liked the colours of those lights and their cross-pieces, I held onto quite a few of them. Sounds anal, but it was really more of a "Oooo, Shiny" effect.

I have used these as jewels and gold nuggets. They do an excellent job! [:)]
