Anyone have a tutorial for painting skeletons?

When I paint skeletons I paint them white and add a brown wash to them. They look so plain. Has anyone found of a tutorial that list the paints and shows pictures how to do it?

just a hint - after washing you might want to drybrush them with very light gray. Not quite white, but close. Additionally, if you want, before that you can apply little brushing with light yellow, maybe with a tint of brown. Very little of that would be seen in the end, but enough to give little life for the piece.

This is a quick and simple way to paint bone:

1) Basecoat the mini with a dark brown
2) Add a layer of bone over top, leaving the brown in the recesses
3) Add a layer of bleached bone over top, hitting just the high points
4) Drybrush very lighlty with pure white.

To take it further do a very thin brown wash and then repeat the last two stages very, very lightly.

Was that the process for the Bullette? [:D] are those citadel or vallejo paints?

Pretty much. It is a combo of Citadel and Partha paints. I'm only just now getting into Vallejo paints (and I love them).

I've never really put much detail into painting skeletons. I'll probably try it out like what is said in this thread and see if they come out better, would be a lot better than just plain white heh

Do a search for old bones in Google images. It brings up some intereseting photos that can be used for inspiration.

That being said, unless you are going for a bleached skeleton a basic tutorial could be:

Start with a dark brown.
Mix in a cool tan color (warm tans, bordering on the peach side don't look as good) for the next layer.
Mix in some more tan for a third layer.
Mix in pure white over the next 2-3 layers.
Highlight the very edges with nearly pure white.

For that bleached look, just sub in navy blue for dark brown, light grey for tan, and add your pure white starting in the third step.

I always started with a basecoat of flat black.

After that, I did a heavy drybrushing with a medium to dark brown.

I finished with white. I guess ivory or some such would be pretty decent, too. But look out for whites that are too "blue".

It gives a pretty decent look, and the skellies are all fresh-out-of-the-ground dirty.

That was a "quick & easy" way from Dragon some 15 years ago (or so). A good Halloween issue as I recall.
