| I was just wondering if I am alone in this: I will only ever repaint a mini if I have at least two copies. No matter how janky the original paint is I always keep one copy in original condition.

I usually repaint only rare minis, and often I have only one copy...

| | Same, but I rarely ever repaint. And when I do, it's only touch-ups on armour, weapons etc. I also lack decent paints and the time. I'll have to finish my Bullywug soon.... | | My Trading Thread | |

| I repaint whatever strikes me as a good sculpt that's let down by a sub-par paintjob. I'm not impressed with most of the DDM paintjobs, I have to say, but another orc isn't worth the time to repaint.
I usually only take the time to repaint something I'll specifically use in RP or a miniature with a good sculpt that I fancy painting just for the fun (but that's equally true with metal minis)...
...all of which means I usually end up repainting mostly rares rather than fodder pieces, and like zanaroth I don't often have more than one of each.
I have been a little hesitant to paint a mini or two but that's mostly from the 'will I trade it or won't I' perspective - once painted they're here to stay. It's a love thing.

| | Since painting is a major component of this hobby for me and I can't often afford duplicates of minis with terrible paintjobs (arcane archer for example) I quite often repaint singles from the set. In theory high-quality repaints tend to *increase* the value of minis so I don't worry overmuch about the value of the sets diminishing much (now I'm sounding rather egotistical [:D]). | | Knight Warlord a.k.a. | | I've just started trying to repaint. I've started with those commons I have left over from my cases that are probably untradeable for the most part. So far I've got a goblin adept that I'm working on along with a Lolth's sting which I painted to be a PC rapier wielder for another player in our campaign. I just feel much safer messing up commons then my rares, even those I have multiples of. | | Complete: Ha, De, Ar, GoL, Ab, Dk, Af, Ud, WD, DQ, BW Favorite Supplier "Indecision may, or may not be my problem." - Jimmy Buffet Champion of the Gibberling | |

| I haven't repainted anything I don't have at least one good copy of. I was hesitant to even paint any rares because I don't want to depreciate any of them. Then I think to myself that I am not ever going to part with these things - so I should do what ever I want.
Still, to date there is one untouched version of everything I have painted.
I paint because I enjoy the hobby. I make my choices by looking at what is available and what is deserving or needing better treatment. I am starting to paint up some rares, but only if I have dupes. | | "GameKnight Games and Cool Stuff Winnipeg's source for RPGs and minis!" www.gameknight.ca

| Sure you're nuts [:D] But I plan on doing the same thing so where does that put me? I just finally got the Vallejo paints I purchased so I'm eager to strike up the brush and try my hand.
Like someone else above, I'm starting with un/commons first. Got a couple Royal Guards that are going to get metalized as a Yuan-ti king's personal guards... | | You see! There ARE others out there just like me. What? Why are laughing?

| I'm exactly the same - I have to keep a complete set in original condition. I've actually collected doubles (and in a couple of cases, triples) of the rares that I want to paint. (for the triples, this will be 1 painted close to the original colours, and 1 with a colour change). So far I've mostly just done Commons and Uncommons, because I don't want to paint a rare, and then look at it in 2 months time, and think I could do a much better job now (and probably then have to trade for another copy). My painting skills are still improving with every group of minis that I paint, but I'm getting close to the point where I even if I improved more, I'd still be happy with repaints I did now. So, sometime soon, I'll probably start on some of the rares. | | | |

| I'm quite hesitant to re-paint my DDM at all for the most part. I bought them as minis I didn't have to paint for the most part. That combined with my large... and slowly growing collection of unpainted metal and plastic minis. That is to say I won't in the future, if I see an espcialy neat looking conversion/paint sceme staring at me from a booster I'll give it a go. More likely I'll end up doing some SWM conversion though.
Right now I'm in the process of converting and re-painting a number of Heroclix and Mageknight figures. I want some interesting and unique looking superhero and villian figures around for the near future. [:)] | | Pathetic Earthlings. | Had I time, inclination and skills; I would certainly be repainting some minis. But probably only a handfull that I had purchased specifically for that purpose.
Otherwise, I think I'd be afraid of screwing it up so that it was worthless. I mean, I'd love to do some repaints of the Weretiger (into a White Weretiger), Lolth's Sting (shouldn't she be matching the rock formations and not wearing black?), Elf Stalker (jungle/forest camo is your friend), Large Air Elemental (into half a dozen other things), and probably some Flameskulls (blue flame, realistic flame and non-blackened bone).

| | I only paint minis I have more than one of as well. The only exceptions so far are Aspect of Nerull, Half fiend ogre and my Hill giant Barb. I have 3 HGBs now, but at the time he was the only one I had. He had no eyes, his necklace was the color of his skin, his colors had bled together and he looked like he took a bath in ink and didn't use a towel afterwards. | I repaint only if I have duplicates, except in a few cases. Currently repainting a Devis for example. I only own one. But most of my other repaint jobs are ones I have multiples of. Current project is repainting my main Skirmish team into my 'custom colors'; white as a main color with dark gold as a secondary color. In the case of the Brass Samurai, this meant repainting the orange areas to white, and leaving the armor as is; it's already close enough to dark gold. Steelheart, same deal; has some dark gold on it already, so the green segments became white.
Sadly, I lack ready access to primer/sealer -- I'm in a rather small town and not rightly sure where they sell the stuff, if anyone in town at all does so. So it's basically me, a paintbrush, and paint. The end results aren't bad. I know they could be better, but for lack of access to proper materials, they turn out okay.
One of the effects I am rather proud of is taking a Timber Wolf and turning it into a Celestial Arctic Wolf. White fur, with dark gold in various places like the Celestial Dire Badger has. I applied the bright white, then the gold, then barely airbrushed some white on top of the gold to help it blend in to the fur while still being distinctly gold.
But, yeah. I generally don't touch a fig unless I have multiples. You're not alone in that belief/restriction. | | - Irrationally Fanatical Champion of Pegasus-mounted cavalry - Proud member of Team Low Tier Beasting: I play CG as my main faction! - Garland, TX 2006 Qualifier Champion My trading thread: http://www.maxminis.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=19725
