Okay, I'd be lying if I said that I wasn't intimidated by Zanaroth's version. (here: http://www.maxminis.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=17098 ) This does allow people to see the differences between our two styles; the major difference being the highlight levels. There are parts that I prefer more on each of them.
I did a major resculpt of the wings. They were fully removed and reattached at a more flying angle (no way that's gonna fit in a booster box! ;) ) As a result, I needed to completely redo the back between the wings; you can see that on the otherwise poor top view. (I don't have a tripod to really make those top view shots work out.) | | Champion of the common Flying Monkey (Fez optional) Peter Lee on the WotC board BAD WOLF

I'm posting this in a hurry; I'm supposed to be somewhere in 10 minutes. I have additional angles that I hope to post tonight with a few more of my thoughts on this model.
OMG THE GOAT HEAD ISN'T WHITE SKIPPED PAINT STEPS!!!!11
Just kidding, I love it. If I don't make it down for the tournament (likely) hopefully a NorCal guy will win it and bring it home so the rest of us can ooh and ah. :) | | Anson on WotC boards

| I really like this Temperance - and thanks for the link to Zanaroth's post to save us all from having to search for it. I like the brown goat head, and legs - and the transition from the front legs to the back legs is beautiful. Thank you for sharing - and I'm very envious of the people who have a chance to take this home.

| Wow Pete. It's fabulous. And nice to see another expert interpretation of this beastie. I'll second smithmeg's applause for the link to zanaroth's post too - very thoughtful :)
I actually like the wing position on the original model (for once), but what you've done with it is also excellent (I love the highlights on the wings - I think one of the marks of a great miniature painter is the ability to mimic 'full-scale'lighting naturally - great job). The colour gradients in the fur too are excellent.
Thanks for sharing! | |

Well, I just cut them off with an exacto knife. (A sharp one. very sharp. My finger is just about healed for *that* mistake... ;) ) I really didn't put much stress on it to crack it. | Now that I see a very well done chimera with Goat's brown head I can said that I prefer the black version. Otherwise the black wings are amazing and I prefer those ones instead of my brown version(good repositioning of the wings). Nice job!!!

Thanks! Seeing your version first definitely influenced me. (I had already done the conversion and primed it when you painted it, but seeing the fur helped.)
I'd agree with the black goat head with any other chromatic dragon, but I really think having two black heads is unbalanced.
I'm using a green/grey color (A German uniform vallejo color; don't remember the exact name) for the highlighting on the black. | | Champion of the common Flying Monkey (Fez optional) Peter Lee on the WotC board BAD WOLF

| | Very nice. I like the contrast in styles between the two custom Chimeras. The dark-headed goat, flying version is striking, while the one on the rock with the wings down looks poised to pounce. Wish I had both of them. | | Over 270 successful online DDM trades. | |

No offense, Peter, but I'm glad I'm not the only one who has bled for a DDM conversion. [)] I almost lost the tip of my left thumb cutting a Large Duergar off his base a few weeks ago.
That aside, this is an absolutley awesome job. Both you and Zanaroth's interpretations of this minis are breathtaking. You've been one of my favourite painters fopr several years now.
To me though there is no comparison betweent he two, and I mean that literally. It is the perenaial "apples v. oranges" truism. While your style is more naturalistic, Zanaroth's is more illustrative, and both are friggin' awesome.
Choosing between them is like someone asking you to pick your favourite kid.

The funny thing with this story... I was looking at the knife thinking, "Wow, a dull knife; I better replace the blade before I cut myself" and while I was replacing the blade I slip and nearly fillet my left pointer finger; instead I just plunged it almost a quarter inch into my finger. Could have been much worse...
