| Okay, I'm putting my mind towards making some maps. (In actuality, 3D maps but I don't want to texture the ground so I'm going to use printouts.) I'm sure there are people out there with more experience than I do so I'm posting what I'm thinking of doing.
So, Photoshop gurus -- any ideas? All I'm interested in are floor details as the walls will be plaster/resin.

That would be how I make one square. 1. I randomly draw one color over another. 2. I do the Wave filter a few times. 3. stained glass filter with no glow. 4. I copy the results from 3, apply the glowing edges filter, set the layer to "darken" and merge it at 50%. 5. Apply the texture/sandstone filter. 6. Lighting effects with the green filter for height.
Does anyone have ideas on how I could improve this? Any other texture ideas?
The general idea for the theme is a "Catacombs" idea similar in appearance to the "Tomb of Queen Peregrine" map. | | Champion of the common Flying Monkey (Fez optional) Peter Lee on the WotC board BAD WOLF

| Brilliant! I don't have any really good advice to give, but I want to thank you for giving me an excellent tool to play with.
Great job Pete! | | | |

| what you are doing is great but if you want to simplify the work and want better results try the following plug-ins for photoshop:
Alien-Skin Xenofex Alien-Skin Eye Candy 5 Textures
automatic seamless (seamless is very important) tiles in no time at all.
I also suggest, if you havent already, to record your process as an action after the application of color, that way you accelerate the process 10 fold. | | Trades >> Completed: 49 | Bad: Ø | Pending: 0 | Trade & talk Live on IRC! SERVER: irc.psionics.net CHANNEL: #maxminis

| Quite honestly I don't think I'd use Photoshop to do this. It'd just take so long. If I was going to go a similar route at all I'd take some of the various textured terrain images from Dundjinni.com's user art. There's just so many like what you're creating there already that it seems unnecessary to make them yourself.

| I'm a little more comfortable with Photoshop, and I can do lighting effect over multiple tiles; that's not something I really know how to do with Dundjinni. (I have dundjinni, but it doesn't work on my mac as my computer is too old. But photoshop works fine. go figure...)
My original idea was to get someone who knows Dundjinni and do the floor while I sculpt the rest of the 3D stuff, but I need to get these done before Origins and I'm not sure I can rely on someone else as I don't know anyone local who can help me. I can also do subtle color variations, etc., and have a lot more control over it.
I'm going to make modular 8 by 8 plates so I can easily print a floor on an 8 1/2 x 11 color printer. 8 by 8 in photoshop isn't too unmanagable. (I'm still deciding on 300 or 600 dpi.)
I also have the unfortunate personality quirk of wanting to do things from scratch.
Glumag, thanks for the "action" pointer! I've never used them before. I probably can't use the Alien-Skin stuff because I'm a cheap bastard. ;) (Yeah, I do notice they have a one month trial; I may need to check it out.) | | Champion of the common Flying Monkey (Fez optional) Peter Lee on the WotC board BAD WOLF

| out of what you've made, I personally like 6 the best. Could you tile them so we could see how it looks as a larger space (for seamlessness) [:)] Don't forget about the Palette Knife tool, it can give you a stoney look. I will play with photoshop today and see what I can come up with. In the meantime check out www.good-tutorials.com They may have something there for you.
And glu, I didn't even know recording actions existed, I may have to play with that today too [:P]
EDIT: And after looking at how you do things, you know more about photoshop than me so don't even listen to me [V] | | Champion of the Alhoon and my called shot for Unhallowed Blood War Called Shot: Phoenix Trade withe me!

| Not bad, man. I'll not restate the suggestions of others as they cover the bases already, but if you want to save yourself the time and effort of doing it yourself try this site:
http://www.davegh.com/blade/davegh.htm
This guy made them for a video game (which never happened IIRC) and he allows them to be used for free, even for commercial use (except for other video games)
If you want to give any texture tile a 3D relief look try this:
- Copy the layer and place the copy on top of the original - Apply the filter>stylize>emboss to the copy - Desaturate the copy - Change the blending mode of the copy layer to "overlay" - Merge the two layers | | Champion of the Gelatinous Cube. Nemesis of Gnomes and Dinosaurs.

Good point.
One option you might also want to consider is to work in greyscale and create master tiles. Then you can make copies, convert to RGB, and apply colour overlays to get a wide variety of final tiles from your single master with very little effort.
In terms of creating seamless tiles here is a little trick: - cut the image lengthwise and swap the two sides - cut the image widthwise and swap the two sides - use the clone and bandage tool to fix the middle bit - et voila, seamless tiles | | Champion of the Gelatinous Cube. From what you're describing, I think these guys are your one-stop shop. They do 3D cardboard cutouts, have an extensive product line, and all their output is in PDF format which you can import straight into Photoshop. They also have a forum full of experienced users. | | Thanks for the memories. :)

| Sulaco, you rock.

This above would be sort of a four square example. The major difference is that I took one of the patterns that Sulaco showed me and stuck it as a limited layer, so I was able to kill some of the glow. (The marble border will line the walls; I may look for a darker green marble as I'm not 100% happy with that one.)
One thing that I want to avoid is a tile-y nature. "Oh, that's just that tile copied over there, etc." The lighting effects can really help with that. | | Champion of the common Flying Monkey (Fez optional) Peter Lee on the WotC board BAD WOLF

| EDIT: Or that up there ^^
Alright In my free time I did some playing today and came up with this.
0) choose your colors (I went with the default Black/White) 1) Filter > Render > Clouds 2) Filter > Artistic > Palette Knife - play with settings 3) Filter > Artistic > Paint Daubs - play with settings 4) Filter > Texture > Craquelure - play with settings
The result is something like this. (4" x 4" square)
