| Edit: A decision has been made [:)] - see the announcement on page 2.
This is inspired by Runelord's (Painting Experiment (X3)) thread - Something for those of us who are not Runelord, Temperance, or Zanaroth - and prefer not to risk rares under our paintbrush. (Though they are welcome to join in if they want to).
My suggestion is that we pick a mini (probably uncommon), and get everyone to paint it, and then post all the pictures in 1 thread (maybe with about a month's delay to let everyone get it done before pictures of other's efforts were posted).
Good candidates from the last set would be the Hill Giant Barbarian, Tiefling Blademaster or Inspired Lieutenant - interesting sculpts with enough room for variety in paint jobs. (I'd like to keep it to the last 2 sets, so that people have the opportunity to get an extra if they need to).
I'd be happy to put up a prize (probably a choice of a rare from my trading box, or a custom painted cane toad), to be given by random draw to those who contribute pictures.
So, are you interested? and what would you like to paint? and is 1 month (from when the mini is decided) a reasonable amount of time? Are there any other suggestions?

| I'll maintain neutrality in this one and not enter, but I like the idea of the tiefling blademaster. It has the most "anything goes" options.
I really look forward to seeing what all the creative painters on maxminis are capable of!

| I'm game for the challenge and impartial as to the mini involved. I have a ton of Hill Giant Barbs but painting a medium might be more fun (Tiefling or Warpriest of Moradin would be interesting).
This could even turn into the most difficult challenge ever:

Impossible.
I'd go for a large uncommon. More area to paint and easier to see.

Not impossible, merely improbable [:D]
There are some nice options for Large Uncommons in War Drums. Fiendish Girallon, Large Duergar, Hill Giant Barbarian, and Elemental Wall.
Out of the lot I'd go with Large Duergar (since I already have a couple finished [:D]) or Elemental Wall (probably yield the greatest variety of interpretations for the paint job). | | Knight Warlord a.k.a. | One thing I would like to suggest is using a mini of which we haven't seen many repaints.
Sure, some things like the Elemental Wall (and a couple others) almost BEG for repainting, but others are less "automatic". Going for some of the ones that may have been overlooked can really let the painters' talent shine. (As an example, I would avoid the Fiendish Girallon and look at the Combat Medic; or I would go with a Swarm of Spiders, but avoid Winter Wolf--stuff like that. Well, the Swarm/Wolf comparison is more about flavor and opportunities to show off. Not so much about the number of repaints we've seen.)
Of course, keep in mind that I'm too chicken to compete. So my input here might well be out of place. | | Champion of the Werewolf Lord, Knight of Anything Duergar, and Squire of Things Gnollish List reset with the start of previews for each new set...got Chainmail®?

| I want to compete, but I have finals coming up in a month and have to dedicate time. So, I might be in but time will tell.
Over the last weekend I have been getting organized with the minis from the last two sets. I agree with Runelord in so much that the tiefling blademaster has the most options for expressions from the individual artist. I also like the inspired lt. But this is just me....

| Well I personally would rather we paint something that hasn't already been done a good amount by one of the exceptionally good painters here. Runelord's HGB is so well done I'd spend most of my time comparing it to his and being disappointed. My mini painting skills just aren't honed to his level. Then again I guess most every mini has been or will be repainted well by a master so no matter what my work won't look as good in comparison.

If I was going to paint the HGB I would start with the skin first. So you can be sloppy. Starting off with a thinned down base coat you can nail the hard to reach areas by slapping the area with the paint. After it dries come back with the highlight and pick out the areas with a lighter shade of flesh.
If you look at temperance's thread on the WIP dragone you will see that he uses a floor wax mix. I do the same thing for the same reason. If you thin your paint then the hard to reach areas aren't that hard to reach anymore...[:D]

| It seems like we have some interest [:D], and the tiefling is looking good. I'll let this run a bit longer in case other people want to have a say about the mini. I'm inclined to stay away from the HGB, mostly because we've already seen a number of great repaints of it.

My advice for painting a HGB, whether we do it for this challenge or not, is to pop the arms off first. Both arms and the club come off as one unit attached under the armband on the right and at the point where th muscle groups join below the shoulder on the left. You can wrench and bend them pretty hard.

When you put the arms back on just use an old (close to being thrown away) brush to "paint" some white school glue into the cracks. The glue fills in well and tends to be easier to finish off than greenstuff. Sulaco's 100% correct about popping off the arms. If you don't the detail on the belt is essentially impossible to adequately paint. | | Knight Warlord a.k.a. Commander (#32) in only 6 months. Where's my pie?
