| I might also try entering. I see something in the tiefling. The barbarian doesn't say me much, but hey, it may put me onto doing something I never would elseway.
Though.. I only painted two or three things, so great it won't be, but I think it will be fun and good practise. | | Champion of Dragotha

| Official Competition Announcement (and rules). To be part of this competition, you need to: 1. Paint the Tiefling Blademaster, (either a total repaint, or just a touchup is acceptable - but the difference needs to be noticable). Basing is optional. 2. Post a picture (or 2) of the mini in the thread I will create on the 6th or 7th of May - entries will be accepted until midnight (maxminis time) on Saturday the 13th. Please make sure pictures are cropped closely round the mini, and no taller than 6 inches - if you can't do this, send the picture to me, and I'll format it - only appropriatly formatted picures will be entered in the prize draw Please do not post pictures until I create the thread (it will be better if most people can finish their painting before seeing what else has been done). 3. I will randomly draw a prize winner from all the entries (the quality of the painting will have no bearing on the result - the prize is to encourage participation by painters of all abilities). I will roll a dice in vassal, in case anyone wants to verify the roll. 4. The prize will be the choice of a rare mini from among my spares (with a couple of exceptions) - (I'll post a list of the minis available when I start the photo thread), or, a custom cane toad repaint (like this one (but probably better) - click the picture to expand)
Sorry that was so long - I just wanted to make everything clear from the start. Please ask if you have any questions. Happy Painting [:)]

| | Also, a seperate thread should be made around the same time for posting comments on the paints. I am thinking this for those people who are on dial up and pictures plus comments might take them forever and deter viewing....like I said just a thought. You converted in the wrong direction - 6 inches is about 15cm. (I put the measurement in inches, because that's what most people use [)], and that's what my photo editing software understands). We want the photo big enough to see, but small enough to fit on the screen easily (and kind to those with dial up connections). I understand about the difficulties of reading D&D manuals when you use the metric system - I never know how far anything is.[B)] | | | |

The wraiths in the D&D board game are completely awesome (I picked one up off ebay for about $25 a while ago). Everything else is OK (although the skeletons with net and trident are pretty sweet). I'm intrigued by the expansions since there are more minis that might be worth grabbing there.

I tend to layer rather than blend. It takes a LOT more time. One day I'll figure out how to blend more effectively and save a TON of time. I posted a paint step count a few months ago for a Chainmail Hill Giant. 100 paint steps adds up time-wise. I wish I could channel Runelord's ability to paint minis so quickly....
Regarding washes...just thin the paint to a milky consistency and slather on. Sounds simple, right? Getting just the right consistency is a pain the heiny. I strongly recommend over-thinning (technically a glaze rather than a wash) until you find just the right mix.

Ah, but then you would also gain my inability to leave any previously painted mini alone. I looked at my orcs from over two years ago and reprimed them because I was so discusted by them.

Fair enough. I've only repainted minis I painted a long time ago (something like 3-4 years) when I was first really learning how to paint minis. Anything I've done in the past 6-8 months I have no desire to touch with paint. Granted, I really like my painting style (which is good since I'm the one who benefits most from it [:D]).

| The rain here has finally stopped; my diet is FUBAR with the GF getting ready for finals (we depend on each other for dietary support); and I've got too much yardwork to think about.
So, what do I do? I paint.
Well, I TRY to paint. The paint is thicker than I remember (I guess you get what you pay for--and I didn't pay for much), the details smaller, and I think my hands shake more.
The Blue isn't working like I want.
The Red isn't covering well without four coats.
The Tan I'm using for the leather isn't making me happy.
The flesh color I'm using is leaving me cold (when it dries it's too close to the leather color).
There are too many portions of the mini hard that are very tough reach with a brush (and shakey hands) without smearing paint all over the rest of the mini.
*sigh*
I don't remember things being like this! I was never very good, but this is rough. I guess it's not bad for the first mini I've picked up in a decade, but hell, I'm gonna be ASHAMED to post pictures of that thing when I'm done with it.
On the bright side, I did accomplish a wash. Unfortunately, I wasn't trying to do that at the time. Still, it's nice to know that I CAN do it! [:o)] Hey, I've got to find the positive in this somewhere!
I'm probably about 95% done with the basic reworking of the mini. I have a couple things to re-do and some choices to make about the metals. After that? I guess it's touch-up city and trying to work on those beady little eyes he's got.
Oh, and the girls watched me working and were intrigued. The youngest thinks I'm pretty good (HA!) and the oldest thinks it looks like fun (if only she knew). But I'm not a quitter, and I'm not going to start quitting now!
Onward and upward! Besides, I've still got a week, and if nothing else, Mrs. Rune (and the rest of the Runes) will have someone to laugh at! That's what happens when your brush is still too wet from cleaning out the last color you used.
I didn't paint tonight (the yard needed to be mowed--badly), but I did manage to give the mini an amateurish black wash/glaze on Tuesday. On purpose this time!
Unfortunately, I was sooo impressed by actually accomplishing that feat that I forgot that I was going to TRY and give the leathers and the flesh a different color wash than black...
So I may end up re-washing 3/4 of the mini. Plus I have to do something to bring back some of the color where I got a little carried away. Like "War Drums" carried away. Oops. If nothing else, there's this Dwarf and a Tiefling who own a mining company...
And some of my "skills" have come back to me, though. I'm better at reaching the tough spots on the figure, and the paint wasn't giving me nearly so many problems. The hands still shake, but I'm relearning how to deal with that.
Maybe this weekend, I can trim up and prime some of those Chainmail minis I've got--The Delvers should be here this week![}:)] | | Champion of the Werewolf Lord, Knight of Anything Duergar, and Squire of Things Gnollish List reset with the start of previews for each new set...got Chainmail®?

| I'm glad you are happier CotCB - you sound like you might almost be enjoying it now. [)] The best thing I've found to limit the problems caused by shaky hands is all to do with posture as you paint .... put your elbows on the table (which has a nice side effect of bringing the mini closer to your face), and rest your painting hand on your holding hand. It makes everything a lot more stable. [:)]
I will be starting up the photo thread (and a seperate comments thread) on the weekend - hopefully with pictures of the prizes to choose from (I've accidently ended up with a VERY NICE bunch of rares [)]). You'll then have a week to get your photo in before I draw the prize.
I'm still hoping that I'll have mine done in time to start the photo thread with it, but life seems to be conspiring against me, so we'll have to wait and see.
Happy Painting everyone [:)]
