My wife is looking at doing some repaints of D&D miniatures. (More accurately, has already done a couple, but would like to do them better)

I hear some people strip the paint off of the figures before repainting. Do you recommend doing that? If so, what exactly do you do?

I did not see this in the painting reference sticky thread, so I figured I'd just ask.

Is there a particular brand of primer you recommend? Same with finish.

Any help would be appreciated.

I do not strip the minis, it is very hard and in order to do so you need to use some questionably safe materials; for more: http://www.maxminis.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=14329

For priming, some people have different choices, as of late I am opting (instead of spray cans because they tend do kill detail) just doing a mix of distilled water and black/gray/white acrylic 50/50 and giving it think coats, a couple usually does it and it is thin enough to keep the detail of the mini.

For finishing, and I have tried many products, there is nothing better than testors dullcoat (usually found in the car/train/airplane modeling section) small can, black, yellow label and runs about $3.29 US. Best Results Ever!

After that I just go over thins like lips, gems, eyes with a semi-gloss or gloss coat, delta ceramcoat has a couple and they are just fine.

Good luck and share your work! [:D]

I don't strip off the paint - the painted surface is smooth and flat, which is a lot better than I got on my one attempt at stripping DDMs. It's very hard to do successfully, because anything that will soften the paint will also start to soften the mini if you leave it exposed for too long.
Just wash the mini with soap and water, then dry it, and prime it.
For Primer and Sealer, I use what came with my giant set of Reaper Master Series Paints, and I'm really happy with them (but they are brush on, rather than spray cans). I've tried just using paint instead of Primer, and I think the primer sticks better.

I prime most of minis black or just paint them black. Use that as a backdrop for shade. No stripping, I find the paint not that thick.

Don't strip, just give it a very light coating of spray primer. You don't need to go heavy cos the original paint is already bonded to the mini. The primer is just to give the figure some tooth for the new paint to stick to.

I agree with smithmeg on using brush on primer. A couple of thin coats really does the trick. I like Testors primer because it is very thin right from the jar.

Okay, with my first ever repaint of a DDM in the "community repaint contest" I can actually chime in on this...[:D]

I used a GW white spray primer and did two quick coats just enough to cover the entire model. I would have prefered to use a brush primer but didn't have any on hand (mental note for something to pick up the next FLGS run). Regardless I would not strip as it takes precious time away from painting, and might obscure some of the detail.

I typically paint metal minis with a black under coat but wanted to try something different....so it boils down to what you are comfortable with.....

Just a couple coins of the realm for the thread....

Well, I've only done the one repaint, but I didn't even bother with primer. Just a careful hand and patience. And a newly rinced and dried mini to start with.

I wouldn't say it worked the best, but it worked well enough.
