(Edit: Provided detail on the Steelheart's repaint in general)

Okay, so I finally got a few Testors paints like the ones Zozo has used in his repaints. With this, I felt like doing a little touch-up to a Steelheart Archer repaint he did, since he didn't have the colors handy for painting up her greatsword.

My question is this: Can anyone suggest a good color layout for the sword? It's currently all black (unpainted), and I have the following colors to work with. I cannot easily get access to additional colors unless I find a place to order online, since no retailer for over 200 miles carries any decent variety of Testors acrylic paints. Anyway, the color list is:

Gloss White, Flat Light Gray, Gloss Black, Gloss Medium Blue, Gloss Royal Blue, Gloss Red, and...

Flat Dark Tan, Flat Red, Flat Light Tan, Flat Black, Flat White, Silver Argent, Gloss Silver, Gold Gloss, 'GL Blue' (Gloss Blue?), Gloss Yellow.

Yeah, I know that's a lot of Gloss and they're generally unsuited to DDM figures; I was in no position to pick and choose, unfortunately. So with what I have to work with, does anyone have any ideas? I was considering Silver Argent or Silver Gloss for the greatsword's handle, and some kind of brown/tan for its sheath.

Edited (more detail provided): Any thoughts? The rest of the figure is already painted, and looks pretty good. For those wondering, the Steelheart herself is in white armor with gold lining (And gold shoulder-pauldrons). The bow is brown, naturally. Hair was left brown since I couldn't figure out any decent equivalent for blonde (nor could Zozo with his paints). Of course, a good blonde color would be fun to add if anyone has a good idea with the paints I listed above.

For the less daring:
Flat Black base. Silver Argent as main color. Gloss Silver for blade edge. For the hilt go Flat Dark Tan as a base and Flat Light Tan as the highligh.

For the daring:
Flat Black base. Add a drop of Flat White to create a gray shade. Paint a lovely NMM gradation by adding subsequent layers of lighter gray (created by adding more drops of flat white). I'd still go with the same plan for the hilt (Dark Tan base/Light Tan highlight), but add a middle shade by mixing the dark and light tans.

For the record....my friend is into model painting (cars/planes) and says mixing Testors paints is a $*@&$!! so keep that in mind [:D]

That's an interesting thought. I suppose it begs the question: Is the sword sheathed, or 'loose' and strapped onto her armor by something? I can't see the detail very well, so I'm open to input on this. If it's open/strapped-on, then I can just paint the blade silver and find some other color for the handle. If it is sheathed, then I have to deal with the sheath and hilt instead of blade and hilt.

Also, what is "NMM" exactly? Never heard the term before.

The Steelheart's sculpt allows for the sword to be strapped (like it's in a baldric) or sheathed. The very slight seam at the blade's end indicates that it's probably supposed to be sheathed (sheathes often have metal caps), but on all of my steelhearts, the seam is easily ignored. Paint it whichever way you prefer (sheathed or unsheathed).

One day, when Steelhearts make it into the paint queue, I'll probably paint one with a sheath, and one with just a baldric (blade showing).

If you paint the sheath, I'd base it in Flat Dark Tan, the run Flat Red over that (leave a tiny strip of the brown still visible, or blend). Then I'd add a highlight with the Flat Light Tan. If I didn't like the result, I'd try again and just use the Dark Tan/Red no highlight.

NMM = Non-metallic metal. It's when you use layered or blended color to create the illusion of metal. An example would be my Cleric of Dol Arrah:
http://www.zenthrus.com/minis/CoDAside.jpg

The armor looks bronze/gold (it's about 9 layers of color grading from a very dark brown up to white highlights). The weapon looks like steel (it's about 7 layers of color grading from black to white).

A better example:

Scan through any of the Confrontation minis and check out the master paints. They're phenomenal. They're the reason I got into NMM painting, and are the level of detail I hope one day to achieve.

Hmm. That's a pretty neat CoDA repaint you have there, and now I know what NMM is. Unfortunately, I'm not sure I'm up to that level of paint skill just yet; might have to sacrifice a few Steelhearts to practice-painting before I try fixing up my white & gold one. But now that I look at the tip, I can definitely see the sheath protrusion, so I'll likely go with that. Now to just find a few pictures for help with it, but I bet Google can handle that.

Thanks for the input, Zenthrus. It's definitely giving me ideas on how to proceed.

I have to contribute some worthwhile tidbits now and then to justify my post count [:D]

I've been practicing NMM for a couple of years. It's not something you can pull off well after one or two tries, but it's WELL worth the effort.

For some inspiration, try www.museumreplicas.com
They have a couple of scabbards that might work as a model for you. Good luck with the touch-up!

A word of advice: toss those Testor's paint out immediately. They are pretty much the worst thing you can use on minis (particulalry PVC ones).

Get to a hooby shop and pick up some acrylics. Even the craft paint acrylics from your local Arts & Crafts store are better.

Completely not an option. At all. There is no craft store for a few hundred miles. That's how remote an area I live in. Testors Acrylics are what Zozo used for repainting my figures and they came out fine, so when I saw the chance to pick up something I knew works, I took it.

So I either have to find a good online retailer for the paints you mention, or make it work with what I've got.

Testors Acrylics = OK
Testors Enamels = Run for your lives

Sounds like PK is using the acrylics. Still not an optimal paint choice, but they work. Enamels, on the other hand, are only good for models (cars, planes, etc) NOT for minis.

Yep. I made sure I told PK "NOT" to use enamel. That stuff is bad news.

He even demonstrated this to me by bringing over a vial of enamel paints. He held it up and yelled "This is what happens if you use Testors enamel paints!"

Then he set one of my figures on fire and 'drove' it off my work-desk. While it was an effective demonstration of why I should use acrylics, I nonetheless had to tell him to get out, and he did not make the sale.

...Wait, that's Tommy Boy. Nevermind. Either way, Zozo definitely did remind me not to use enamel paints.

I dunno.... I do like to set things on fire. Could have been me.
