Let's see -

Kestral - wow! Nice blue color. It is so vivid compaired to the rest of the figure. Well done.

Taliesin - Nice job repainting him in a new way. I like the idea of a fire dwarf....or really small giant![:D]

Dire Badger - Very well done. I like the earthy feel that both of them have.

Taliesin: I like the gradients on the axe. Cool idea with the fire dwarf (hot idea?).

Dire Badger: Awesome work with the fur (BGB & cloak). Really like the choice of colours, especially on the dwarf.

Direbadger. Amazing work on both, but the bugbear was particularly inspiring.

I'm a little curious about the basing. It looks like a mix of a couple grades of sand and static grass. Am I right? And, if so, what grade of sand do you use for the small gravel and is that all one blend of static grass or do you use several and/or paint it after applying it?

Nice entries thus far. And, I am sure the more the merrier!! As these contest bring out the best the community has to offer. As seen by the entries thus far!!

I don't know if I am going to be able to get in on this one. Not that I don't want to but I have just got a bunch of tasks on my hobby plate right now. I am getting ready to start posting them here though so ya'all can see what I am talking about...[)]

Very nice so far everyone. [:)]
kestrel.ca - that blue has worked way better than I thought was possible - well done.
taliesin - brilliant idea - and nice execution too - I hadn't noticed that ring on his finger till I saw it on yours
DireBadger - they both look fantastic - if I was going to be really picky, I'd suggest smoothing out the highlights on the BGB skin a bit - but it's probably only something that shows up at this zoomed in (which you can't do in real life anyway)
elder_basilisk - I love the base (and the bugbear is good too)
aravis - I like the green skirt - and orange highlight works well

I'm really busy this week, so I don't know if mine will get done in time or not, I'm still hopeful, cause I don't have any other plans for Saturday yet.

Some great work so far!

kestrel.ca's proper frost dwarf - now, that's more like it. I actually don't mind the blue anymore - it works when it's got colours other than white to tone it down. Like the base. Is that the equivalent of flocking, but for snowy terrain?

taliesin - I love that you did this, plus thanks for an evil-DM-idea(tm). Good colours: the beard works really well, and the skin, cloak and (glowy-embery) axe are nice.

elder_basilisk - great job (you picked a good palette[)]) The skin's great and the face looks suitably grr! Great base.

Thanks for your praise [:I] for my efforts. Now look, you made me go all red.
The white fur on the bugbear kind of killed the look I was aiming for (I overdid the last dry brush), and the dwarf is really simple - no highlighting at all really, but I left off tinkering so as to 'paint something else'.
The basing is pretty 'basic'. It's off-white sand all over and then pretty-fine grit in places for little rocks, followed by a scatter of static grass, mostly not on the rocks if my superglue is accurately placed. The grass is a mix (I've got a wee bag of the mix) of 1/3 medium brown and 2/3 medium green. Nothing's painted - just glued on.
The whole basing how-to I stole, erm, borrowed, 'homaged' wholesale from someone on the boards here who was kind enough to explain their process...Runelord151 I think - yup - it's here (though I'm not so thorough [:)]).

http://www.maxminis.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=17727

I'm afraid I don't know what grades of sand/gravel I use; my local hobby store had none but helpfully directed me to the adjacent pet store, where I picked up a pound each (more than I could ever hope to use) of sand and grit, both used to floor bird cages, for pennies.

Yeah, the base is "snow flock" (not sure the exact name -- Games Workshop). Some months ago I was painting polar bears and ice elementals so I've got some use out of it. It's a little bit finer than green flock, very light, and I'm still trying to figure out how best to use it. I think I should start painting the base white before gluing it on, as it always seems to come out a little dark.

It's been great seeing what has been done so far. Keep up the excellent work.

Hopefully, over the next couple nights, I'll have some time and energy to at least get the Bugbear done. *crosses fingers*

Jenkiis, I love the smeared on blood, and of course the rest of the paint job looks amazing too. I really wish I could figure out how to do the whole dry brushing thing, so my re-paints would turn out better.

I love the yellow eyes - eerie. And the dried blood crusted on the axe.
The whole clay/blood smear thing is carried off very well too. Bravo.

Seems like not as many people are entering this time around. Too bad, since I thought the figure choice this time around was far better than the Tiefling Blademaster. If you plan to enter, Get Crackin'! There's still time!

Comments:
Kestral-Nicely done, particularly the fur and the flocking.

DireBadger-Both look great, the Bugbear's fleshtones in particular. Funny how even when he's painted up "normal", the Dwarf still looks evil...

ElderBasilisk-Very cool mod with the rock-ledge base! Love it!

Aravis-Picture is a little fuzzy (especially the head), but the blood splatters are particularly well done.

ilarue-can't deny that it's well painted, but all of those spots are a little too busy, IMO.

Jenkiis-that is one creepy bugbear. Awesome!

Berr Baron-Nothing wrong with a standard bugbear, and yours looks pretty darn close to the color palette from the MM illo. Nicely done.

Thanks Taliesin.

Hey smithmeg - there was a contest that closed over in another thread about winning a case of Harbinger minis (you had the guess the price paid per booster on a stash found in a clearance warehouse). I hope you don't mind but I did suggest to him "Talistran" that a donation to the cause here in crafters corner would be much appreciated. I guess we'll see what thinks of that idea. 1 case of Harbinger with a booster awarded every second month would go a long way to promote the painting hobby here in our little corner of maxminis.

Cheers!

Nice work on the "standard" bugbear, The Beer Baron.

That one would be a great leader-type for an encounter. You can tell he means business!

Hmmm...chronic procrastination isn't helping me any. The grand irony is I had my BGB painted the day Meg announced the contest...must get picture posted soon...

So far all of the entries are very well done. I particularly like the leopard-skin Frost Dwarf. Just how it should have appeared in War Drums boosters [:o]

Procrasination?

I haven't even started yet! [v] I might miss the deadline for this one. In fact, I literally just dug my extra BGB out of my extras box (well, bag) he's still in his baggie for crying out loud!

I've already got a rough idea where I'm going with this one, though. Although I don't think it will work.

Just under 6 hours left.
no comments from me at the moment, cause I still have way too much painting to do (I don't know if I'll get them finished or not).
Everyone who is late (which will probably include me too) - still post your photos to the photo thread, so they are all together. You can't win the prize, but we'll all know where to look to see the minis [:)].

Wire? What wire?

I had originally planned on doing something "Ghost Riderery" with the BGB's face, but there just wasn't enough room for the busted twig I use to paint with. So I slopped a bunch of a lighter grey over a black base coat and attempted some other work. Then I sloshed some dirty dishwater..."black wash" over it to redefine some of the fur and pick out a bit of work here or there. The one thing that did almost work was the handle for the axe--I wanted that to look something like bone. Like the BGB carved something's femur to make it.

This is not my worst work (although I can understand the confusion between the two...) [:D]

Well, first off I want to say WOW! The BGB and FD have never looked better! I love seeing different people's interpretation of the same mini. Cool stuff. [^] ΖD] Thank you, again, Smithmeg for being the muse to so many. I hope you host another of these contests to continuously lure more artists out of the woodwork and into the spotlight!

Secondly, it should be quite apparent that I will not be entering the formal contest at this point. The past couple of weeks have been busy, busy, busy for me. And today was my husband's birthday and I had to bake two rum cakes for him (his favorite) and we had a few friends over... so not a chance of even a last minute effort to paint a mini. Still, I'm hopeful that I'll find time to paint either the FD or BGB and post it in the painting thread sometime in the next week. We will see.

Kudos to all who paticipated!!! [:D]

As you probably noticed, I didn't get mine finished - I decided it would be better to do a proper job, than to rush it to get something entered. Hopefully I'll get them added sometime in the next week.

We have a Winner - Congratulations to taliesin - email is on it's way.

The next challenge will be announced on the 5th of August, and will close on the 2nd of September. I'm looking for a sponsor to supply the prize, (they will also get to pick one of the minis to be painted), if you are interested in sponsoring, please email me. We have a sponsor - Thanks Runelord [:)]

Awesome job everybody, I'm impressed at how good these 2 look when someone takes their time to paint them (especially the Dwarf). DireBadger yours were simply awesome.

Thanks everyone (for you participation and your comments) - I love looking at how different people paint their minis - and this is a very good way to encourage everyone to post pictures [)].

The next one will have a mini chosen by taliesin (as the winner of this one), and one chosen by runelord (as the sponsor of the next one). I'll find out what it will be at the end of July (after we've had a little while to live with the new minis) [:)].

Congrats Taliesin. I quite liked your version of the dwarf. Good work from everyone. I'm looking forward to the next challenge.

I mentioned before that I'd be willing to donate a booster for one of these contests. If Runelord is the contributor for August, put me down for October.

And with a little luck I may find the time to finish my Frost Dwarf repaints this week. Cheers!
