Well...about one day after I got one of these at a trade at our pre-release I decided to remove him from the base and see if I could spiffy him up. Easiest way seems to be exactoing off the lil tail part and then placing a screw driver under the main base and prying up. I put a small crack in the base but no big deal. I decided to do the base first, then attach the mini after. won't do that next time. a few gaps between the mini and the base resulted. anyways, here is the base

I then decided to pull the whole guy apart. Again just used the screwdriver. Pulling the top off the bottom required pliers as well! Damn secure considering there is a HUGE gap in the join. ah well. Anyhoo, here it is dissasembled

I decided to paint the interior cavities a bright orange. On the next one I will do yellow since I don't think this showed that much.
Here is the base and torso

Here is the finished product. Not as bright as I had hoped. I also did some drybrushing of darker oranges and reds near the tips, but doesn't show up well.

All advice comments and critiques welcome! And can't wait to see a light up one!

Regardless of the small problems you seemed to find with the finished product, that base makes all the difference on that mini. It looks great, and the way it's sort-of detached actually adds to the effect, giving a more 'rolling fire' effect, which is perfect for this guy.

I'd also agree that the inside should have been done with yellow instead of orange. It just seems too subtle as it is, though it doesn't look bad either.

Overall, it's nice enough to warrant having done. Good job.

Very nice basing! Could you explain your lava technique? I know it's probably something simple, but I'd like to know.

If I had to guess how he did it, I would say he painted the base bright yellow/orange then dry brushed red then black.

Thanks all. Close on the base Zozo. Did light orange. Then a bit farther out drybrushed darker orange. Then farther out drybrushed red. Then finally black. Will start with yellow when I do a second with a yellow interior.

Very nice--I'm looking forward to seeing the results of a yellow interior.

That looks sweet!

One question though - how did you get the texture on the base?

I like the basing.

Would it have been brighter if you would have painted the inside just white?

For the texture on the base, that is just ballast. A mix of large and medium. Think it is from Woodland Scenics. As for the interior, I think white would work too. I have my d4+1 for summoning now [:D], so can try bright yellow and white. Won't get to it until after Gencon. (minis tommorow night, driving down to columbus fri then leaving sat morning). Will post once I do. heck, might try a light too!
