before reading further, this post may contain some spoilers if you are going to play Red Hand of Doom

I don't know about you but I have been tremendously inspired by griffrat and his hirst arts/pink foam work on the Red Had of Doom locale encounters; so much that I went out, bought some material and gave myself the push to attempt to work on a couple of simple pieces.

For now all I have finished and it is officially my first work with pink foam is Skullgorge Bridge. I already ran the encounter and my players LOVED the scenery and made the 3½ hour encounter that much enjoyable.

The entire piece is made out of pink foam, it was constructed in 5 pieces, the bridge walkway is one (1), the battlements are another (2,3) and the bases of the towers with the dirt road the last two (4,5). The towers are made out of cardstock and as per the pictures, the roof is removable. They are not quite to size with the towers in the adventure's description but they were close enough to run it successfully.

Hope you enjoy it and once again thanks to griffrat for the inspiration and involving me in another enjoyable hobbie.

Now that's just freakin' awesome. Did you do the tower stone and roof pattern? I'm gonna have to look into this pink foam deal, it looks great. Does the bridge crumble into a million pieces when it's blown? [:)]

Very cool! Are those towers made out of cardstock?

Thanks all!

The towers are made of cardstock and I got it from www.miniature-games.com The only thing I did different to them was not glue the top part to the rest so I had a removable piece.

Very nice. Thanks for the link on the paper models. I've made some of the free wizards ones and they come out pretty good and look great.

Yes the adventure calls for a medium but I have a 8 player 6th level party with weapons of legaxcy accompanied by Jorr, the ranger, they did very well at Vraath's Keep. I threw the large dragon because I had to make it more challenging [)]

I can barely tell the towers are cardstock, the amount of detail on them is amazing! So how many ink cartidges did you go through making them?[)]

Another awesome terrain set.
Great work.
I really like the roads that come up to the bridge, great paint job.
The scoring of the foam with the 1" grid turned out really well also.

Thanks for the pics. With all the great work going on lately, the ideas are really flowing. Thanks for the insipration.

Just to give the pictures a bit more life I am pasting bits and pieces that were written by my players and me in the campaign's log. It is a bit of a long read but fun. Some of my friends have real talent at this, at least I think so [:)] 4 players and each controls 2 PCs, I have group them together

DM's Note:
The dragon swoops down at full speed towards the bridge, the closest targets are Corin and Tristan and the dragon goes after the elf as his mark. The powerful charge and bulrush of the dragon were too much for the bard to parry and he is pushed off of the bridge falling roughly 120 feet into the waters below. Squeezil, who was strategically hiding and hovering under the bridge, sees his comrade falling to his left and yelling so he charges after him, but his flying speed cannot compete with the falling speed and acceleration of the bard but Squeezil does his best to keep up.

Tristan shifts quickly as the momentum carries him down and both friends meet gazes and are able to lock eyes for one last time; Squeezil has a look of desperation while Tristan, seeing his friend’s despair, smiles warmly for his valiant effort, the few seconds felt as a long journey for the gnome and our elven friend, who quickly accepts his fate after realizing that his destiny, whatever it may be, it is now completely out of his hands.

Tristan hits the water at an almost straight angle, which luckily minimizes the area of effect, nonetheless the water is an unwelcoming host at these speeds. Squeezil watches the bard disappear into the engulfing water leaving behind a crimson stain that signals things might not fair well for his companion.
Elven Bard's thoughts:
I heard myself scream. I didn’t want to, but I couldn’t control it. It happened so fast. I didn’t want Aurora to worry.
I tried to grab the edge, but perhaps my arms were too short. Perhaps I wasn’t strong enough. No matter. It happened.

Then I fell. And fell. And fell.

Growing up in the deep wood, you don’t see many drops like these. How far have I fallen? It seems like I’ve been falling for an eternity, yet there seems to be no time to do anything other than fall.

I did manage a quick smile at Squeezil, my faithful, flying leader, rushing- or at least trying to-my aid. I saw the desperation on his face, as if he knew his efforts were futile. It saddened me. Such a valiant little fellow. I will miss him, if I do not return.

And who will care for Aurora? Although strong, she is young. And a bit rash. Even a bit rude. But yet, she is good. And just. And kind. She will need looking after. Perhaps Skar will fill the void I’ve left. She trusts- and likes- him. May Kord to continue to shine upon him.

Hitting the water was like that time I ran to kiss Evelyn Silverhawk, and when she moved, I hit a tree. My head hurt for days, yet I lived to joke about it. I can’t say I’ll be that fortunate this time around.

I can feel myself slipping away into the darkness.

Goodbye, my friends. My Corellon Lareithan shine upon you all, and keep you well.

(his other character did not speak)

Gnome Wizard's Note:
That damn dragon is going to kill me for sure, Squeezil thought to himself as he hovered under the bridge, the sounds of battle over his head. He fished the last healing potion out of his pouch and drank it down. The pain barely subsided. I'm really a mess, aren't I?

He hated hiding under the bridge, but he knew he couldn't out-manueveur the dragon, and he knew it would go after him the moment it saw him. For now it was distracted and he didn't think it saw him hide here, so he was safe. But what to do next? His spells were just about depleted, and even his potions, scrolls, and wands weren't going to do much good. This could be the end....

He heard the woosh of a diving dragon and braced himself to stare into its steely eyes one last time before those teeth ended everything. But to his surprise, he saw nothing, and heard a scream. He'd heard that scream before - far too often. But this time it was worse, filled with more fear than pain. To his horror, the scream was followed by a dark shape rushing by. Squeezil immediately forgot his own danger and rushed downward in pursuit.

Yes, it was Tristan. That elf certainly has bad luck, he thought. Tristan didn't seem especially broken, but the fall was going to kill him for sure. Squeezil chased after as fast as he could, but Tristan was already too far ahead. The water came rushing up to meet them. Water! At least Tristan now had a chance. Is that elf smiling at me? Always happy, to the bitter end. Well, if he can hit the water right, he might survive. And I should be able to fish him out and bring him back up, so the dragon can eat us both....

Human Cleric of Kord's thoughts:
Skar was tired. Very tired. Even with the acid-resistance Thunk had given him, the dragon's foul breath still burned his skin and his eyes. Hobgoblin arrows dug painfully into his muscles with every movement. Skar tried not to heal himself too much - Kord's divine blessing was for his friends, not for him. Yet in this battle he had healed himself several times, just to keep himself going. He was ashamed. He was even more ashamed that he had almost died - only Torin's potion had brought him back from the brink.

The hobgoblins were a minor inconvenience. They would meet their maker soon enough, thanks to Aj-nin, Jorr, and those bolts of light coming from Squeezil, wherever he was. It was that cursed dragon that must be stopped. Merikel had bit her once already, and was hungry for more. Skar scanned the area, saw the dragon in the sky, and saw Tristan crossing the bridge. The dragon swooped, and Skar cringed, knowing Tristan was about to get a face full of acid. But no! The infernal creature came down and knocked Tristan off the bridge, into the abyss below. No! Skar had begged the angel to return Tristan's soul to him, this was not how it was to end. Skar's mind raced, the circlet seemingly burning into his brain. He had only a potion of levitation, and he knew from Squeezil that it would be worthless in this situation. Tristan's body would break on the rocks below, and there was nothing he could do about it. The glorious bard, the deadly archer, the dear friend, was gone. May Kord deliver you swiftly to your feasthall, my brother, he thought to himself.

Then he felt the sadness melt away, leaving only anger and hatred - emotions strange to the young man. His head spun, and there was the dragon, locked in combat with Torin. The dragon had made a mistake. Perhaps it was tired, but it had landed. Now was his chance. Regardless of what happened to himself, Skar had to finish this. He rushed forward, Merikel held low at his waist. The dragon seemed amused as the young barbarian raced forward, and was obviously more concerned with the well-armored warrior screaming taunts at it. That was the fatal mistake. Skar rushed in, quicker than the dragon expected, and thrust Merikel up through her chin and out the top of her skull. He thought he felt Merikel shiver in delight in his hands.

Of course, Skar was not prepared for the bulk of the creature tumbling down on him. Perhaps the beast will kill me yet, even in death, he thought to himself. But Torin severed the head fromt he body as it fell, covering Skar in hot, acrid blood. He was alive, but barely. He didn't have the strength or the heart to turn around and make his way to the chasm....
The twins Torin and Corin thought's (Humans, Fighter and Cleric of Obad-hai:
"COME DOWN AND FACE ME YOU COWARD!!!!," Torin shouted up at the Green Dragon hovering well out of spell and arrow reach, let alone Torin's menacing Greatsword.

Torin looked at the shimmering Greatsword in his hands and felt the power of history resonating from the hilt Crimson Ruination. The sword sent a rush of power and courage through his body. Torin KNEW he could slay the dragon...he felt it like he had never felt anything before. If only the dragon would face him!!

"IF YOU WON'T FACE ME, I'LL SLAY YOUR WORTHLESS HOBGOBLIN FOLLOWERS! AHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!" Torin rushed across the bridge passing Corin who leaned, hidden, behind one of the bridge towers. Torin noticed an intense look of concentration on his brother's face as well as a great deal of fear. He couldn't worry about that now...Corin could take care of himself.

As Torin crossed the bridge, an archer flailed at him hopelessly, trying to slow the warrior down, but it did nothing but embolden him. Torin, enhanced magically by a Protection from Energy spell, a Barkskin spell as well as the powers the sword endowed upon him, felt invincible. Nothing could touch him! The Dragon's days were numbered. But for now, there were Hobgoblins to slaughter, and the slaughter was fast and gruesome.

Torin slashed at a hobgoblin and brought him to one knee. The Hobgoblin frantically tried to retaliate, but Torin was too quick and he decapitated the helpless creature before he could strike. The next Hobgoblin fared even worse. Torin swung his Greatsword from up high and slashed his prey clean in two. Torin, now covered in blood, was panting from the exhilaration he felt. Now, where was that dragon...

Before he could even finish his thought, the Dragon swooped down and spat his acrid acid upon Torin and flew back up into the air on powerful wings. The acid crept down under his armor and started to sting and burn! "

The spell must be wearing out," thought Torin..."I MUST finish the Dragon soon or I will not be so invincible." Torin surveyed the battle and noticed Corin had started to cross the bridge. "Where is he going!" muttered Torin. And then, for the first time in this battle, fear struck Torin's heart. The Dragon was swooping down towards his brother. "Obaid Hai be dammed!!," thought Torin! If anything happened to his brother...All he could do was watch for he was too far away and Corin was frozen in fear, fumbling for his Warhammer...but wait! No, he wasn't going for Corin...but who...Tristan!

Tristan was exposed on the bridge with nowhere to go. Torin watched as the Dragon rammed into Tristan and the small elf tumbled helplessly over the bridge into the abyss! Torin could not remember what lay beneath the bridge...was it rock...was it water. He hoped it was water or the elf stood no chance. Torin recovered his wits quickly and returned his focus to the task at hand...kill the dragon...and, "CORIN! GET OFF THE BRIDGE AND SEEK COVER!!" he yelled.

Torin rushed to open ground and continued to taunt the Dragon as he swooped and spit his foul acid upon him.

"I'VE KNOWN TREE LIZARDS WITH MORE COURAGE AND STRENGTH THAN YOU!!! I'M JUST A PETTY HUMAN...COME AND FACE ME YOU FIEND!!!"

Finally, when it seemed like the Dragon would never come down, he landed in front of Torin. The dragon towered over him and looked into Torin's eyes. Torin's knees almost buckled in fear, but Crimson Ruination steeled his nerves and gave him the strength to strike! He landed a mighty blow to the dragon who seemed to be weak from previous attacks from Squeezil and his own powerful sword. The Dragon struck and landed a painful blow with his wing as he barely missed with his powerful jaws.

They danced around each other, looking for that killing blow when the tiring Dragon left an opening. Torin raised his sword to land the final blow, when from out of nowhere rushed in the massive barbarian Skar! Skar brought his sword from his hip up and impaled the dragon through his head, stealing the killing blow from Torin! Rage coursed through Torin and he thought, only for a second, of bringing his sword down upon the head of the priest he had so recently saved with a healing potion...but no! "Skar was only trying to help and he had plenty of anger for this wretched beast and he deserved the kill as much as anyone, " thought Torin begrudgingly. Instead, as the Dragon toppled over onto Skar, he slashed Crimson Ruination down upon the neck of the once majestic beast and severed its head from its body sending a shower of hot blood upon both warriors. Skar stepped back, the head of the dragon still upon his sword as the Dragon's body fell harmlessly to the floor.

"That was a mighty blow, Skar. Well done," said Torin through gritted teeth still drenched in blood from the Dragon. Torin quickly rushed away to check on his brother and to expend the energy still coursing through his powerful body.

Corin:
Corin leaned against the bridge tower, pressing himself against the side, hoping to conceal his girth in the cracks in the stone. "HA!" laughed Corin aloud at himself, but he quickly closed his mouth and looked about frantically....did the Dragon hear him?

"I must concentrate on my Spiritual Weapons....never have I cast two at the same time before..I can barely move and control them both," Corin thought to himself. Then he heard Torin screaming at the dragon to come down and face him. "Is he CRAZY!!!!" thought Corin, and then he realized, yes, he is. He has always been like that, ever since they were children. He would challenge the larger children to fights and feats of strength. Corin shook his head in disapproval as he thought of his brother. He was and still is a smart boy, yet, he shunned his studies in favor of violence. "All because I was smarter and quicker with the books...he is so dammed competitive...Obad Hai, I beg you to watch over his soul!!"

"Damn!" Corin muttered under his breath. The first Spiritual Weapon dissipated and the next was going to follow shortly. Yes, there it goes. At least they were able to do some damage, although they were worthless against the dragon. Corin surveyed the battlefield, or at least what he could see from his vantage point. Not much. So, with fear in his every step, he ventured out from behind the tower and ran on unsteady legs towards his fellow brave adventurers. "They may need healing, and I can not fail them!"

Corin made his way, slowly across the bridge when he saw it. It was the most beautiful creature he had ever seen. The Green Dragon shimmered in the light as it swooped down towards the bridge. Corin could not move. His brain raced frantically trying to think of a spell, but he could not. Then he remembered his Warhammer and he reached for it slung across his back, but he could not get a hold of it. But the Dragon was not coming for him! NOOO!! TRISTAN!

Corin opened his mouth and tried to scream for his friend to run, but nothing came out...He just stood there with his mouth open as the Dragon threw Tristan from the bridge to his death! "NOOOOOOOOO!!!!" screamed Corin! A deep sadness came over Corin as he thought of the many nights Tristan had spun his tales and of the many times in battle his sweet voice had lent him strength...no more. Just then, a scream from Torin broke him from his reverie and he did just as Torin instructed, he raced from the bridge to cover, lest the Dragon decide to swoop down on him next. There would be time to mourn Tristan later. Corin invoked Obaid Hai to protect Tristan and the rest of his friends as they fought for their lives.
Aj-nin Half-elf ninja:
Aj-nin's thoughts, as I believe he was still shooting arrows from across the gorge he must have had a good vantage point:

"Whoah." Aj-nin hides in the shadows against the wall.
"That can't be good." Thunk carries most of his equipment so he does a quick runthrough of what he's got on him. Bow and arrows. Shortsword. Poison dagger. Healing potion. Loaded dice. "Damn the gods, there is nothing I can do. Farewell my elf friend, I shall possibly hear your songs again in (insert wherever elves go when they die - and I know you nerds know that...)"

Thunk, half-orc barbarian:
Thunk was busy chasing a dragon around but when the dust settles and he realizes what happened:

"Damn, there goes my pirate sword." Thunk summons an eagle and asks it to bring a potion to Tristan. If it cannot carry a potion thunk will tie the smallest bottle he can find to it's talon and send it down. He then calls for his wolf, if that is at all possible.

Awesome. I wish I had had that piece while I was running the encounter. Mind you, on my imaginned terrain, I had the stairs up the towers running around the outside, so when my parties monk tried to climb up the green dragon divebombed him to bull rush him into the pit. Sadly, he passed his reflex save...
