Thought I start a new topic to keep you updated on the progress.

This week a few details were added to the pass. These rock outcroppings were case from Woodland Scenics molds with Dental Plaster and Hydrocal (wanted to see which one worked better, and I would choose Dental Plaster because on of the rocks broke coming out to the mold with the Hydrocal and none of the D-Plaster ones did, btw they both weigh about the same amount and cost about the same amount)

Anyway they were painted the base coat and attached with Liguid Nails...

More next week.

NOTE this piece is being created by the newest Maxminis member DARIUS(1 post!). I just get to post the pics for him!

He works on it most every Monday...

Oh yeah, I got my GBD today! [:D]

Very nice. And big, too.

I hadn't quite realized the scale of that until the GBD was added in...Wow.

You know that is currently my dilema, I have tried a few things in the past and have not had the best results.

Anyone have any suggestions?

I would suggest a durable clear coat medium such as 'Liquitex Acrylic Mediums'. These will give you that durable, waterproof, mountaindewproof, finish that we all desire. Use an airbrush with a diluted mixture 3/1 should be diluted enough for your airbrush but be sure to clean RIGHT AFTER you use it.

They will run you about 40 dollars for a gallon.

Not much done this week. Had to wait for the paint to dry so we worked on some other projects and played a little DDM. Ran the GBD against LG pallys and LE Godslayers and lost to the dragon both times...

Anyway painted the earth tone color...

Well here are the final shots. We may create some more addon pieces that can be removed when needed, but this is the heart of the structure. Keep in mind the top is blank on purpose to allow for customization...

Comments welcome.

Thanks

After looking at the pics, they really don't do it justice. Any tips on taking a better picture? It looks much better in person!

Looks like fun!

A great idea and should be fun in battle play.  A couple of suggestions:

1)  Drybrush more shades of grey and brown onto the cliff face.  This will bring out the texture a lot more and make it more appealing.

2)  Drybrush the "trail".  Right now it looks like a one color mud all the way up and down.  I would have added a few rocks up and down the face and drybrushed them with 5+ shades of grey.

3)  Blend some other mud colors in.  Start with black and then go dark brown and then use the brown you have now for the top layer.

4)  I would add a sheer cliff face to the back of the top.  Maybe with a cave entrance.  This of course would be removeable, but the top of mountains is rarely that flat.  It would just give it a better backdrop.

5)  Add some moss / plants growing on the cliff face, as well as dirt in the crevices.

6)  Finally, I would add "sides" so it looked a little more "enclosed".  i.e. you would have the left and right sides up up against rock instead of "falling off".

It really does look good, I'm just trying to help jazz it up. :)

I think in future dirt/stone projects I will definitely use more colors to make it look more realistic.  You can't tell in these pictures but we did glue sand down the path to make it look a little less muddy.  Also I stuffed lichen into some of the cracks and corners which doesn't show up to well in the photos.  It could look more realisitic but it's close enough and I'm ready to end it, hehe.  I think we learned a lot from this project though.

Talistran,

Thanks for the comments.  They are certainly helpful.  Darius and I are really novices at Terrain creation and we are learning quite a bit as we create new pieces.  I think terrain adds so much to the game and have been on a kick lately to get more and more built.  I've been creating smaller projects while Darius has been working for weeks on this one.  As you can see from his email, he is ready to move on from this project.  In person is looks great and it will be very useful.  We are going to create other "modular" pieces to use with this one as well.
