Its done! Not too hard either, I'll write up some instructions and Radio Shack part numbers if any one is interested.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/majinerik/206986704/

theres the Big boy, there are more pictures of the building process on that page

Some What Complete Instructions here:

Let me know if any of my steps need better explaining or embellishing, this is the first time I've written instructions for one of my projects and I’m not sure if it’s clear enough. I usually just build and tinker on projects for myself and don’t usualy worry about the steps.

A friend of mine was planning to do something like this as a prize for the maxminis event at GenCon. I think he thought he was being unique--maybe now that it's already been done he'll pass.

Dunno though.

Cool concept, especially if there aren't any wires. It would be fun to use lit-up minis in play.

> Dang, that's a big battery. You were just using an LED right?

Its an "N" type battery. First and foremost I wanted an actual battery holder and didn't want to fabricate one. I wanted it to feel like it belonged there, and not two lithium batteries electrical taped together. The Smallest Battery holder Radio Shack carries is the N, so I used that. I may head over to Cables and Connectors later looking for lithium holders, unfortunately we dont have any Frys here in Connecticut :( The light is a Maglite Lamp, the brightest thing I could find for the 1.5 volt N Battery. I works better than I thought it would, its really bright. You can see that it is obviously illuminated when the room lights are on, not too sure about under the piercing Florescent bulbs of my FLGS though :)

Too bad that it's most impressive when people won't be able to see their character sheets[v], it does look very nice.

Can of the Cave Beer:"Too bad that it's most impressive when people won't be able to see their character sheets, it does look very nice."

Possible solution: Find out if white paper stands out under a blacklight, I know white cloth usually does. If not then photocopy the character sheet onto a piece of paper that will (I'm sure they make them, try looking in neon colors) for a special night encounter.

oops. I hit post a little early.

It's probably better that you used a mag light. I was wondering if LEDs would have enough brightness. I was thinking of making of one with a flickering light might give it even more of a fire effect but that plastic is pretty thick.

I must say your turned out pretty nifty.

Nice glowing elemental. Looks better than I though. Just a shame the bottom half isn't glowing, but beggars can't be choosy.

Glowing Huge Fire Elemental N-Size battery Instructions
I plan on converting to lithium batters as soon as I can get some pre made battery holders and I will update with that info as soon as I do.

Parts:
Radio Shack “N” battery holder (270-405A)
Radio Shack SPST Submini Slide Switch (275-406)
I know they make a smaller one, but this works well
Maglite Solitaire Replacement lamp 1-Cell AAA (272-1184)
N sized Battery

Instructions:
1) Take apart the Elemental (Thokk Does a nice write up here http://www.maxminis.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=23707)
2) Plan your holes! For the Battery and Switch, so they don’t interfere with each other http://www.flickr.com/photos/majinerik/206983720/in/set-72157594224740438/
3) Cut a hole for the switch, if you cut it a little small or just right you won’t need to use screws to hold in place. Then mount the switch http://www.flickr.com/photos/majinerik/206985461/in/set-72157594224740438/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/majinerik/206985788/in/set-72157594224740438/
4) Widen an area for your Battery holder; I used a Dremel Cutting blade, drill and exacto Knife. Be careful not to widen too much or you may cut a hole to the outside. Be sure that the battery will be flush with the base of the Elemental so you can reattach the base. http://www.flickr.com/photos/majinerik/206984538/in/set-72157594224740438/
5) Drill a hole into the torso for the light. It should be slightly larger than the bulb drill bit size around 5/32 http://www.flickr.com/photos/majinerik/206984538/in/set-72157594224740438/
6) Connect the Lamp to the battery. Cut both of the wires on the battery supply in half. Solder one of the Batter holder wires to the lamp, and solder one of the scrap wires to the lamps other lead http://www.flickr.com/photos/majinerik/206984687/ , do not solder to the switch yet. Test the circuit before installing, by inserting a battery and touching the leads to get the light to light, if it doesn’t check your connections. Wrap the connections in electrical tape to prevent shorts http://www.flickr.com/photos/majinerik/206984000/in/set-72157594224740438/
7) Insert the light into the pre drilled hole http://www.flickr.com/photos/majinerik/206984974/in/set-72157594224740438/
8) Solder the remaining leads to the switch, one from the battery and the other from the lamp
9) Mount the battery; tuck the wires neatly into the figure. http://www.flickr.com/photos/majinerik/206985167/in/set-72157594224740438/
10) Reattach the base. I used a few small screws to reattach it so I could replace the battery as necessary. http://www.flickr.com/photos/majinerik/206985646/in/set-72157594224740438/

I'd say it was about 20 minutes, the hardest/longest part is cutting the holes for the battery. If you have any sodering experience the circut is very easy, even if you dont a simple battery/lamp/switch circut is a great place to start! [:)]
