     I used to make a whole bunch of pix like your maps for my RPG's.  Then, I decided to make a similar ship, cut it out, and glue it on a piece of 1/2 inch foam board of the same shape, (except for the oars).  In this way I could make several three dimensional ships and boats of various sizes.  I also wrapped a thin band of strip cardboard around the decks to serve as a railing and a dowel to serve as a mast to hold an assortment of sails.  It's a little more work but you get really versatile crafts to place anywhere.  Then I made docks and a seperate blue/green grid of one inch squares that serves as the water.  I ended up making several ships of various types to be used in different campaigns.
     With the excellent workmanship of your map, a 3D ship would look really awesome.
